Pretty complicated when you're already EFI, but if only carbureted it's a very easy swap, just need to order parts, sort out how to have the intake+airbox, and then jet/tune.

If you connect vacuum line from the advancer directly to intake manifold without reducing vacuum force, it'll rip the diaphragm apart, the vacuum should come from carburetor (with calibrated orifice)... happened on my advancer on 3A... ))

First time I've heard about needing to change the fuel pump. Currently looking into itb conversions and none of the research that I've found have mentioned this. Also regarding the MAF sensor, if you fabricate a plenum you can chuck the MAF on that and should be good to go. At least this is from what I've read.

I was thinking about doing this to a Civic engine.. D series ... The ones from Japan were dual carbureated quite longer than they were here in the States.... I got my hands on a intake manifold and a set of those carburetors unfortunately the carburetors were junk...but I still have the dual carb intake manifold for a D series and I have a bucket of carburetors side draft style that would work with it....👍👍👍

Same here in the UK, we had the dual carb civic into the 90s on the 4th gen Civics, I turbo'd mine while retaining the carbs (Spoiler alert: it didn't last long, but that was more related to the (lack of) spark control rather than the carbs themselves)

Hey D4A. I've a Toyota TE71 Liftback and it has the well known 2T 1.6L single carb engine, recently my father gave me some working carbs from a Honda cb750 four-k and an electric fuel pump. However, I've some doubts about which main jets I should get since these carbs are completely mechanical and they have the guillotine system, so the throtle response is theorically pretty fast and I can't afford to screw up a recently built engine from the ground up hah Cheers from south america, keep that MR2 rocking!
@d4a
@d4a 5 жыл бұрын
That's a very tough question. I assume you're talking about carbs that have flat slides? They are on the tricky side when it comes to tuning. But if you have a fully rebuilt engine I suggest an additional investment of 160$ into an AEM x series gauge that's gonna make tuning a lot simpler and definitely prevent you from blowing an engine. Here's an unboxing video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/bJCziHRqec15oc0 And here's an install video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gV7RiI2Zn8uUpdU

@@d4a Yup they're flat slides carbs, I also have vacuum meters but it didn't come to my mind that a wideband was a must thing to have. I hope whatever is causing you to belittle someone else's work and make untrue statements soon stops, and things improve for you. But just to set things straight. Megasquirt is 900$. That's without itbs, manifold etc. Everything for a bike carb conversion including carbs, manifold, and Nodiz pro ecu was 950$. That's twice as cheap.

@d4a
@d4a 5 жыл бұрын
The 4agze is definitely not the best candidate for this. I think you might be able to make it all physically fit but I doubt it's worth it. It would require an immense amount of fabrication, tuning would be a nightmare and it would end up costing more than is sensible. You could just remove the supercharger and do the carbs as on an NA engine but that's stupid too because the supercharged 4age has lower compression compared to NA (different pistons) and the end result would be likely very disappointing. Why not keep it supercharged? If you wanna do this get a NA 4age and start with that instead?

Most carbs are designed to work between 0 positive pressure and vacuum. Reverse the pressure and the spindle seals will generally blow by and leak. The jet size and resulting mixtures are tuned around that max 0-1 atm differential. Cars like the Lotus Esprit turbo enclosed the carbies in a box that was at manifold pressure as a fix. It wasn't a well regarded setup vrs the EFI that replaced it. Almost all the production car carby and boost setups are "suck through" not "blow into" arrangements for this reason. EFI ITB's and boost were used on the RB26 and SR20DET GTiR engines. Look these up in the forums and compare them to the RB25DET and SR20DET RWD variants which were single throttle body. The dyno charts and factory service manuals are all online so you can see what hardware was needed and how they compared.

how did you manage to get cv carbs to work without the factory airbox from the bike and or velocity stacks and a restrictive airfilter ?
@d4a
@d4a 4 жыл бұрын
I have velocity stacks. Factory airbox and restrictive air filter are not necessary. Sure, some carbs need them more than others, but usually it only really influences idle quality and very light throttle, both which you can easily correct with proper jetting and ignition timing corrections.
@alexxxxx12341
@alexxxxx12341 4 жыл бұрын
@@d4a is that due to the fact of in this case you have more mass airflow through the carbs instead of the factory application? Only asking because in my experience with cv carbs on bikes without the proper airbox the bike will idle but the smallest amount of throttle it will bog because the needle and slide wont lift due to what im assuming is turbulent flow across the inlet of the carb ?

Did you make more power with the bike carb setup?
@d4a
@d4a 3 жыл бұрын
I did make more power, but that's because I raised compression, upgrades cams etc. Carbs themselves won't make power unless the stock EFI is very restrictive. They will however change the power band, throttle response and sound.

If I have a vacuum advance distributor do I need a feed from all cylinders. like the balance bar for the map sensor setup much appreciated.
@opelmantamechanic8438
@opelmantamechanic8438 3 жыл бұрын
If you try it from one cylinder it will chatter like mad . A fish tank shop can supply a metal 5 way adjustable bar /manifold that you can use the taps to equalize all the vacuums from each manifold and give you a smooth output suitable for your vac advance ,a map sensor or a gauge. Ebay search for Aquarium Fish Tank 4-way Air Pump Control Valve Manifold Taps Silver Tone

I got 1.0L 4 cyl, which carbs size would u suggest for me? If one carb for each cyl
@williambartholomew5680
@williambartholomew5680 Жыл бұрын
Best thing to do is caluclate how many CFMs each cylinder will move then get the appropriate carb set to serve that, coincidentally the CFM count roughly translates to the carb bore diameter = 34cfm per cylinder would work great with a 34mm carb per cylinder for instance.

@@d4a Oooh, I wasn't serious about the conversion. Neil Jones is a great source for MR2 bits, I learned recently my windscreen seal needs redoing and that is also where water is getting in. Great video on the carb conversion though, keep up the good work xD

Hey I'm planning on putting bike carbs on a 4ac 1.6L it has a mechanical fuel pump (powered by the camshaft) would I have to do anything to the fuel system or should it alright, also would Yamaha r1 carburetors be good for it?

It should be ok, but add a fuel pressure gauge so you can check the psi is within and range the carbs are happy with

What happens to the throttle position sensor if ur installing on a carby model car sorry ? Or can ya get bike carbies without sensors
@d4a

If you'll be relying of vacuum advance for ignition timing you either just ignore the sensor or get bike carbs without one, plenty of those out there.

The fuel pump is likely not the problem because as you say the vehicle (is it a bike or a car?) was carbureted before, so likely the fuel pump isn't creating too much pressure. Did you check your throttle cable? Is there a way to adjust idle speed on that carburetor?

Hay bud I'm looking in to doing my own DIY bike carb conversation on an old L28 and a 5m ge I just have sitting in my shop for my drift car project. Do you have any sizing advice or carbs your recommend for that dive engine. They are roughly 460 cc per cylinder. So I'm thinking of using 6 Polaris 500 ATV carbs they are dirt cheap and roughly the right size . What do you think ?

@LarryisControversial3000
@LarryisControversial3000 4 жыл бұрын
I might be wrong, but the way I understand this is to look for a bike engine about half the size. So for you something in 900cc to 1100cc range. Bike carbs take in more air from what I have been told, about twice as much. Anything bigger could be too much carb(s) depending on application of course.
