Great video - thanks! Very informative. Just wish I'd seen it before we started. However, seem to have got it right. We set the bottom batten (southern speak!) , set the top one then divided by the recommended gauge to get the nearest figure then worked only from the bottom batten (lath) to avoid cumulative error. You are spot on, there is no golden rule, you have to use your noddle! Thanks again!

Good idea to let the membrane to drape a bit between the rafters. Otherwise you can get dirt and water trapped above the battens.

It would’ve been a good idea to set your rafters on top of your pole plate and bird’s mouthed them over the six by two then nogged in between that way the gravitational force is not trying to push your wall plate of your blocks

Good practice is to fit the fascia 50 higher than the rafter line so there is a slight kick up on the tile to run into the guttering that way if you have a above soffit vent it will still fit ...maybe your way is just for filming

as a roofer my self you cover alot of good stuff for a builder i say that as there are some shocking attempts at the roof from builders, good point made about the dry verge dont always work. i dont think the people that make these things have had time on the tools. I find running a batten up the verge screwed to the batten ends then fix the dry verge to that alot strong and your not nailing into the end grain when the wind picks up they soon get blow up especially if they end on a bad bit of the profile like them double romans

As you are a roofer I appreciate your comment. A couple of people have mentioned the full batten for the dry verge and I think it’s a good idea so I will do it in the future. Can you offer me an opinion please? Batten on top of the eaves tray or not? A roofer told me to do that if I don’t use an over fascia vent to kick up the tile rather than run the fascia high and sit the tile on that but I’ve had some rather abusive comments about it so what’s your take on it.👍🏻

@@mrabuilders6723 never a batten on top of eaves tray. To be honest I wasn’t sure why you hadn’t sorted the soffits and fascia first to set you tile kick then eaves tray and roof from there. Always batten up the dry verge as stated for me as well

@@Joe74854 couple of reasons, based on things I didn’t initially like about dry verge systems. I was dead against them in the early days when on call outs for wind damage and general poor installation. I fix dry verge caps twice for wind lift, at the extreme top and extreme bottom of the pre-holed dry verge cap grid. The grid is bigger than a tile batten. If you just screw into the tile batten end grain you only have a 50mm purchase. Benefit of a batten ran up the verge are 1. You increase the leverage of the fixing points to hold them firm in extreme conditions. 2. Cut your tile battens exact to the brickwork / barge board. Then add the tile batten to the side. This gives a perfect straight line for tile cutting and also solid base to keep the verge caps perfectly plumb with the building. All my own way of doing things that have made a solid job vs the issues we resolve from day to day correcting poor workmanship.

Your facia should go on first as you should have a 30mm. Upstand to lift the front tile and then the eaves protector goes on top of that and if a tile slips or breaks the water will get trapped at the bottom lathe now and if you screw a 38 mm lathe up the barge. You can screw the verge into it and not Into the end grain

Agree and you can see the bottom row dropping away in various shots. Better to have even a very slight kick upwards rather than the tile falling away... it always looks like the tiles hare dropping. Nice job on the verges but not the fascia area.

That is the only way I've ever found of doing dry verge on a pattern tile,only thing I do different is cut my lath flush with the brickwork and then run a full lath top to bottom👍

Use a heat gun on the top section of the verge piece so that underside of the tile moulds into the plastic.

Have you done a warm roof construction yet? Eg with the insulation above the rafters? Probably not suited to thus type of extension because it makes the roof thicker. It allows you to use rigid insulation (better u-value than rockwool) without having to cut it to fit between rafters with the associated gaps.

Done a couple of warm flat roofs. I enjoy doing them but a bit of a mess about with the vapour layer to get it all sealed up properly especially around the roof lights. 👍🏻

Have I missed the bits on why the velux’s aren’t in? I’m having an extension on ours pretty much the same as this but I’ve gone for 2 78x98’s but now I’m having a nightmare with delivery dates. I always mark my roofs left to right, mark it out in 3’s then chase the line as you should always tile right to left, as if it does need a cut u always want it on the starter (right hand) if then your not far off from the line to get a full tile in at the start you can stretch the tile til you reach the line which means Ul have a full tile in either end if u have enough width, that’s why the verges don’t like it as it’s a cut, great job as always

My roofer pulled the felt so tight between rafters the water was pooling at each lathe, hopefully there won't be any water there when the tiles are on. I pointed this out but let it go as this was a doer upper. How do you go about leaving it between rafters. Great vids. Thx

Great series I hate dry verge nailed into the end grain, wind always moves them over time. I tend to run a lath up the length then fix it with galv angle brackets to the other laths so you are not fixing into the end grain, bit more time but worth it I think, job looks well tho and enjoyed watching

Im going to be doing some dry verge for the first time slon and the roof has under cloaking (i think thats wgat its called) which protrudes out from the gable (there is barge board fitted) would i be best to fit some tile batten (2×1) underneath the cloaking and screw that to the barge board up tight then put the dry verge over the tiles and the newly fitted tile batten and NOT nail it into the ends of the existing tile batten? Other question is are these deep enough to fit over the tile and the newly put on tile batten? Will they cover that span? Great video's keep them coming. Thank you

You run tiles from the right hand side , run your gable up . Over on the left side the tiles design the the cut and the dry verge will fit and that’s how all roof are done

All I can say to that Billy is what we say in most of our videos. It’s not how to do it it’s just the way we do it. I put a lath underneath the profile part of the bottom tile at the bottom of the rafter so this maintains the height. I change that if I’m adding fascia vents which in this instance we didn’t cos we’d got vent soffit. Thanks for watching. 👍🏻

Also the eaves protection is fitted to the top of the facia. You need some jockeys or plywood packers on the rafters under the felt support to lift it up 5mm or it will trough and fail causing water to run backwards, ,the weight of the last tile will tip it back. Its a very common mistake with theses felt supports and it causes a bigger issue than not using them.

30:38 I have this capping installed on my home but there are big gap between where the brick work stops. Causes a draft in the loft. I have been told I can use the gap filling foam to seal it up to stop is losing heat out of these gaps which lead out to the verge caps. Is this a good idea? We have had the white breathable felt put all over the roof so it breathes from there.

Hi, a stupid question but it's been bugging me since the initial groundworks. Sorry if it has been addressed earlier. Why wasn't the tree/bush at the barge board end removed as it is bound to cause problems as it naturally grows and matures. To be honest if your cutting products down you are voiding warranties - maybe ask your roof tile supplier to recommend a dry verge for the profile. Also I may be mistaken but looks like you have the bottom batten (to achieve the 'kick' ?)on top of your eave tray? - if so this is bad practice, no batten should be in this position. if you have to introduce a batten to gain height - talk to your carpenter/joiner as they have not set up the roof correctly.

Great detail but the breathable membrane isn't supposed to be visible to UV light and should be trimmed back under the bottom row of slates or tiles but maintaining at least 150mm over lapping the eaves trays.

Whats the pitch of that roof ? What tiles being used? Im lookijg at a shallow roof of 28degrees and having to use ondutile corrugated underlay not just felt.

17 degrees if I remember. Mendip tile which is fine for that pitch you just increase the headlap. It depends what part of the country you are in as to how and what you have to do. You would have to plywood this pitch as well if you were in parts of Scotland. 👍🏻

Best way to fit the dry verges is to cut the lath flush with the brickwork then nail another lath to it giving you that 25mm overlap you need but at same time it gives you an extra 25mm totalling to 50mm to screw to which stops the tilt on the verge,.I have a picture here to show you but can't send on KZbin

Your right James they are but not necessarily the only way to fit them. We had a 2” smaller fascia by not taking it all the way up to the underside of the tile which saves some money I suppose but It’s never sat right with me sitting the weight of the tiles on top of a UPVC fascia hence me putting the lath there like we used to before we started to use EPS. Hi Tom from what I was told years ago they are blue to show that they have been regularised better and that they are a better quality timber. If I remember rightly the ones they use on some top end house building sites are red. 🤷🤷Thanks for watching

@@mrabuilders6723 it basically lets the building inspector see that you've used treated timber from the road. You can use timber without a colour but then if they ask you have to go and find the paperwork to prove it's had the right treatment.

With regards to the plastic verge, set it in normal but push your tile above up (or strip the verge if already tiled) get the hot air gun on the plastic and heat it up, put your tile in place which will kick the dry verge up again, then push the verge to the brickwork. It will bend the plastic to the shape of the tile and within 20 seconds the plastic should have cooled enough that it will hold its shape. Thats what i would do personally.

Genuine question what happens to any water that gets in under and runs down the breather membrane(windy area etc) once it hits the battens that are fixed on top of the felt tray ,as the natural sag isn't there to allow water to run under the battens ? Would this not rot the first rows battens.

That is a genuine question and I can see your point but you may not catch it on the time lapse but I do put a bit of pressure on the tray between the rafters to create a sag in them prior to screwing down and then the felt sticks to that. But if water gets under the tiles we have a bigger problem than rotting lath so I’ll keep my fingers crossed on that one. 😁👍🏻

Kick always goes under the tray and felt…we’d always put fascia’s on first. Upper roof felt should be cut back flush with the front of the tray as the felt will rot. Not sure how the joist hangers are going to work on the window trimmers with them being plumb

As I said in the episode we would have struggled to get the fascia and soffit on and it always concerns me about it getting damaged when they strike the scaffold but yea it’s easier to do it before the tiles go on. I’m not going to put joist hangers on I’ve nailed and screwed them in. Only taking a short rafter and I’m at 400 centres. Thanks for watching.

so how come you dont add the thickness of a tile on the very bottm lat so its the same as the 2nd row which the front of the tile sits on top of the 1st tile which sits on top of just a lat . does that not leave a gap at the start of the 2nd row for the wind to get under?

Hi and cheers for commenting. I’ll try to explain myself. I’ve put a lath under the bottom of the 1st making sure that the tile sits on the profile part and not the flat part on the underside. Therefore it’s positioned in such a way as you said not to produce the gap between the top of the first and bottom of the second tile. If this had been a flat tile I may have put a double lath under the bottom instead. Hope this explains what your asking thanks for watching 👍🏻

No such thing as a silly question. It’s only because the customer and us agreed that we wanted the same elevation to match meaning no barge to match the house elevation. 👍🏻

I’ve never used nail tape and if I’m honest never heard of it. If your using a good quality breathable felt on your roof there’s no need for anything else. However, I say that but it depends on where in the country / world you are. Happy to help you mate 👍🏻

Facia goes on first..kick the bottom tile and trim your membrane back so it doesn't show.. .

Apparently it used to be done in places, but they did away with full sarking in the post war housing boom because of timber shortages. And we've just never gone back. That's why the size of the battens is specified in the regs, because they're actually a structural element providing lateral restraint to the roof. Guess we might have to go back to full sarking once regs require warm roof construction.

Yes mate, we did. We went round just after they finished the decorating and removed the plasterboard, the insulation, exposed all the rafters and installed hangers all because someone in the KZbin comments section either doesn't understand something or was taught a different way of doing things. Why aren't you using verge roof tiles? You can put a verge cloak board underneath. We use these in the Netherlands. Personally I don't like those plastic end caps. Very interesting video's though.

wouldnt it be fetter fitting the plastic bit over the felt , the way your doing it is making a row of swimming pools immediately at the upper edge of the plastic , at least if the felt ran under the plastic it would drain out , the plastic would work as a cover to take the bad look off the job ,,, just a thought , Im a welder not a roofer though but I do know what makes sense.

Here in UK roofs aren't normally boarded. Sarking boards are more common in Scotland.

As well as Colin’s point, we don’t board roofs that are sloping, the tiles we use are rigid cement or clay so there’s nothing to be gained from boarding the roof as the tiles offer good protection and the roof structure can still breathe with the breathable membrane
