Two genuine ruperts...

I served 13 years in the Army, and the difference between my Corps and the Welsh Guards, the Guards officers all seem down to earth and approachable whereas in my Corps the officers were all career minded arselicking wankers who you couldn't talk to unless you sounded and acted like a robot. This is reinforced with this production. We had one attached Guards officer who was a really nice bloke. Very posh but would turn up on piss ups with the Toms.

The "locally raised militia" he refers too are no doubt in reference to the Ulster Defence Regt who had more experience, knew the area and terrorists far better than this officer. A somewhat derogatory statement of part time soldiers who hadn't the protection of reinforced concrete barracks and whose daily courage was finally rewarded by an award of a gallantry medal

i agree with david...........maybe Crispin should visit the graves of these mitilitiamen to see how untrustworthy they proved to be, I would trust them more than a toff like him

I've the utmost respect for the UDR. They put their lives on the line whether they were in or out of uniform. Many a good man was killed in the Fermanagh area. Look at the Graham brothers. Three UDR soldiers all murdered while off duty and going about their day jobs by IRA death squads. Never has there been a braver band of men.

David Corbett I don’t think it’s that he dislikes them or is denying their experience or anything. I think it’s quite simply that he hasn’t met them, they are an unknown force and thus he is wary of them

Wow, reminds of my middle teens watching the news at teatime, "good friday peace agreements, ceasefire been broken, 20 killed in blast, soldier shot dead by sniper and armalite recovered, weopons captured in shipment from libya, hellicopter hit by heavy duska fire, homemade mortar destroyed in controlled explosion, and homemade bazooka fired at RUC convoy"and to think that all this was normal back then is quite worrying......

Crispin Black had an illustrious career, ended up in politics and is sadly no longer with us. Watching programs like this which seem of a time in recent past, of young men who are no old or are gone makes life seem so very short

The locally raised militia lost 197 men and women and countless other murder, injured after their service. They continued to loss men and women post 92. I wonder if Crispin Black would cringe if he listened to this today. The locally raised Regiment went on to be awarded the The CGC the second highest award this country has to offer no other regiment has been recognised in this manner. Not bad for a locally raised militia you don't trust Sir.

Strange how this commander acts, probably straight from Uni and no other experience. But most men had a lot of respect for the UDR, who by all means was a good unit. Most of the Men got decent briefings before deploying to Northern Ireland so its strange to see this officer acting so oblivious. Probably was too busy eating caviar to listen to the briefings given to the grunts.
