I just tried to do it, but when i do the white border, that border does not fit to the zoomed pictures. while the pictures are zoomed in, so they don't fill the whole screen, the border however, goes along the edge of the whole screen so there is a gap between the border and the pictures.

Hi Alex - I used this on Resolve 17 - wprked perfectly. Just updated to V18 and the border (following your instructions - I think) isn't around photos, but borders the screen (the photos are scaled down). Any ideas what I am doing wrong? Thanks

New to Resolve and using version 18.6. Noticing that a small image, say around 2000x1500 or less, works fine. However, larger ones twice that size and bigger have the issue you describe.

@@TheMissMystery Since I was already having to use photo editing s/w (Photoshop Elements in my case) to resize large images, I now use it instead to crop and create the border to get around having to use Resolve's ColoredBorder node with its limitations (and bug in the current version?). Not ideal, but I have yet find a better solution.

Hi I just found your channel and it's been very helpful! I'm trying to follow along to make a color border on my zoomed out image. The color border effect appeared to be applied to the frame instead of the shrunk image so that there is a gap between the border and the image. Is there a setting that I'm missing?

@@TherapyWoodWorks I was having the problem as well and decided to upgrade to the studio version to see if that made a difference and it does. In the studio version it works like it is shown in the video, but in the free version of resolve, it only does the border of the frame and not the image.

However, I tried adding a border using the exakt same method described (at appr 8:25), but my border is applied to the "outside" dimensions of the full video - not the scaled down image as intended. Hi Alex ! 🙏 for this video and all the others you made that are outstanding (really !). When I try to place colored (white) borders around my pictures (as you showed us), when I get into the fusion page my pic is smaller than the Mediaout1 frame, so the colored frames are placed around the Mediaout1 frame and not around my pic frame. Had the same problem and just found the solution : Before entering the fusion page, right clic your image > New fusion clip Then it will be good (delete and recreate your images if they already been destroyed)

Colored border MUST be added in Fusion on the picture itself. Adding Colored Border on the Edit page will add it to the Timeline clip and not the individual clip.

Really loved this video. Anything new that we get with 19 to make this easier. I'm interested in the PUSH transition. Would like to push many photos to the screen at different locations so viewers can continue to see older content while newer are coming in. Lots of stuff in here that seems like it would be simple but as a fairly new Davinci user it helps immensely to see it laid out this way. Also, I've been doing the Blanking Fill by hand for so long and got really excited when I saw this, however I also like to dim the background image so I might be stuck still. Hopefully they'll add that option in the future, or maybe I just stop doing that haha Great video!

Love this! So much easier than in AE (the last time I used that..... thing). Something I noticed, though, is that the Colored Border effect doesn't work if the images have been cropped in the Edit page, because the cropping removes the border.

Love this tutorial, one problem I am having though is with coloured border - when I follow the instructions exactly, instead of the border being around just my image (zoomed to 0.8 as in the video) there is a checkered (transparency I believe) background in Fusion around my image and the border goes around the checkered background rather than just the image. Am I missing something?

Hi Shaun , I've had same issue , turns out that the images need to be smaller that the timeline that You are using for the project , try do resize You photos to smaller size and You are good to go.

OK sorry for bothering you again: If i add the white border to the first clip and then shift mark to the end to apply, after hitting apply it will reset the changes on the first clip and all compostitions are deleted. I have landscape and portrait images mixed, could this be the problem?

Wonderful! I have a question: I would like to use a photo (16:9) as a background because my other images only have portrait and 1:1 format. 16:9 photo placed on video track 1, the other photos on track 2 - timeline resolution is 1920:1080. Unfortunately, the lower track with the 16:9 image is not displayed as a background when the playhead runs over the small photos, which are smaller. Same with Background > Solid Colour. What could be the reason for this? Davinci is still 16

Thank you for sharing all these tips, Alex! When I created a slideshow in DR 17 a while ago, I ran into a couple of issues. First, it wouldn't let me use images straight out of my 40MP camera. I had to resize them to fit within the maximum size DR allowed. This sucks if you want a zoom effect on the image because you will lose detail. Second, the colors of the imported images didn't match how they looked in my image editors (on a calibrated monitor). I had to fiddle with reassigning the images in DR to a different colorspace to get a better match. Perhaps you can share your thoughts and best practices around these as well?

I'm using 18.6 and the "Change clip duration" doesn't seem to work whatsoever. I want to set the timing of each clip to 00:00:04:32 but it automatically changes it to 00:00:05:08

Not sure what I am doing wrong - when I select the image and open in the fusion tab the image is much smaller and i get the border around the image yes, but its floating in black space. How would I get the image not to scale down like that? That's the only issue I am having otherwise no problems. Stumped.

Hi Alex. Great Videos! Thank you. I just made a slide show using the info in this video. It is of a visit to the 'Jewish Delicatessens in New York City' exhibit at the NY Historical Society. I realized after it was rendered that about half of the slides are signs and explanations that need more time for the viewer to read. Is there a way to increase the time for a group (selected) of slides(clip). CMD-D does it for a clip, but not all selected. Thanks

PLEASE… could you add some instructions on how to do this on an ipad. I can’t find any settings that refer to default length of still images and when I crop them, they playback glitchy, making it hard to set to a beat. I’ve asked on a large forum and people are saying this might be too hard for Davinci… even without any transitions or color grading or anything. Not being able to make a slideshow on an M2 chip machine… this just doesn’t seem right.

Thanks. I keep screwing up when copying from one clip to another. There's a fairly sensible cut and paste for attributes in the edit page but some strange select targets then push the composition on to them going on in fusion.

So maybe somebody watching this otherwise great tutorial does have a solution for zooming the pictures and (!) doing a transition . The problem with the adjustment clips are that you get a hickup between the pictures if you are trying to do a transition like "Cross disolve" between them as the new adjustment clip starts after the first few frames of the new image still belongs to the picture before...

Im working on a slideshow, the problem is that when I add transitions on each photo the dynamic Zoom, the normal zoom and the position from inspector panel aren't working anymore, in order to solve it I had to use "adjustment clips" over every photo and put zooms on each one of them, but it affects the background. So, I kinda solve one problem but get another one.... Do you know a solution for this?

Hi, I am new to da vinci resolve. I am trying to edit a photo with white borders and blanking fill. I want my image slightly rotated, with white borders and blanking fill effect in the background (i have zoomed out the image initially). While doing that, somehow the borders are getting cropped out. It is look perfectly fine if don't rotate, but if I rotate it it messes up the borders. Any help?

This is a great tutorial! Thanks so much. I do have a question however. When making slideshows like this, I like adding a Ken Burns effect (aka Dynamic Zoom, Pan and Scan, etc) to each slide to add some different interest and focal points of interest for each slide. However, unlike the method you use (where the entire image including the white board and drop shadow) is zoomed in, I want to find an easy way to have dynamic zooms INSIDE the framed / shadowed picture, and keep each “framed image / shadow size and location static on the screen. So if each slide were its own bordered photo, then the dynamic zoom appears inside the border of the slide. Hope this is clear? I have tried to do this by using key frames either in the inspector for each image, or within Fusion itself. Is there a easy way of doing this without using key frames and/or fusion? Also, I would want the ability to adjust the dynamic zoom independently for each photo or slide, so that each photo can have its own Ken Burns effect.

I signed up and tried one video template, could not get it to work, so I tried a second that was only any good for creating reds screens all over my UI (media offline) and I tried everything to link it but useless, so I went for transitions, and that was nearly as bad.

With blanking fill, can you do that with a video clip? Have the background and the main clip playing together? Basically the background video playing but heavily blurred but the clip in the middle as it was shot?

If you're new to the world of editing/and effects this slide show is perfectly fine for grandma. But come on... let's take all this into after effects and go crazy. Make the borders wide on and jitter, give everything its own motion - push it hard.
