I'm very proud of Jaques :). After reading more about the story, THIS is where the tale of a silver bullet killing a werewolf came from! The hunter, Jean Chastel, that actually killed it in 1767 used a bullet made of silver and thats what started it all. Just a fun fact for everyone.
@enki66762 ай бұрын
Having lived in France, I'm very familiar with this story. There is quite a bit more to it, and especially to Jean Chastel, who finally ended the beast. Jean Chastel was a recluse with a bad reputation who ran an isolated inn further from the town, which was said to also serve as a brothel at night. He was known to have a bad temper and rumored to dabble in black magic, which was not so uncommon in rural France at the time, and was also called Jean Chastel 'de la pasca', which means something like 'son of the witch'. He also had a penchant for breeding dogs. While the autopsy of the beast showed that it didn't belong to any known dog breed and was more akin to a very large wolf, it did have some characteristics of a Beauceron, which is a local dog breed, notably the reddish hues on its black fur and its double dew claws, and its tail was also similar. Some people believe the beast was the result of interbreeding between a Beauceron and a large wolf, which no doubt would've looked like a monster straight from Hell to the superstitious locals of the time. And according to some survivors' accounts, the beast was also sometimes accompanied by an unidentified man, which seemed to be its master and to command it. And the beast only ever attacked women and children, never men. Some locals were very suspicious of Jean Chastel when he was the one who finally managed to locate and end the beast, when so many others had failed during all those years, including experienced hunters and entire hunting parties, some of which had been sent out by king Louis himself. They suspected Jean Chastel of having bred the beast and trained it to attack people, maybe to settle scores related to his alleged brothel operations. But he was never investigated and found guilty of any wrongdoings. Not in regards to the beast atleast, he had several unrelated run-ins with the law because of illegal poaching activities.

@@seanfuller3760 What's fake? The movie that openly states that it's _loosely_ based on the Beast of Gévaudan, which would mean that, yes, it is obviously a fictionalized account, or are you saying the Beast of Gévaudan itself is a fake story? Because the latter _is_ a true story. The only thing up for debate is that no one ever figured out what the beast (or beasts) was. It might have been 1 or more wolves that had developed a taste for human flesh, or it might have been an animal not native to the region, but brought in by some wealthy collector, like a lion or hyena, which were popular amongst collectors at the time, or it might have been a person or persons. I listened to the story about the "bear" attack in Texarkana last night and after looking up The Beast of Gevaudan, the description that was given by the people in Texarkana bears (ha!) a striking resemblance to what the French reported as well. 🤔
@nuxbot9192 ай бұрын
Hard to take any text from that era too seriously tho. Writing was extremely subjective and victim tracking was mostly done by the church. Imo probably was a injured/malformed Wolf combine with a serial killer roaming at the time. Same thing happened in Africa but in the late 19s early 20s with men eating lions, some were legit attacks meanwhile a priest with political movies was actually hiring people disguised as lions to murder his opponents, taking advantage of the situation. Today this region is one of the least populated ones and if you love hiking/canyoning/kayaking it's a beautiful spot to go. And there are the biggest wolves sanctuaries there too actually ! Not too far from this region at the same time there was also another man killing beast which was confirmed to be a wolf with rabies as mutual reports pointed to survivors developing the disease. The name was the beast of Sarlat.

Wow, this story really taps into something primal about survival, fear, and bravery. The fact that young Jacqu, who was labeled a coward by his whole village, steps up to lead the charge against a literal nightmare is beyond inspiring. The imagery of this "Beast of Gévaudan"-a creature so feared and misunderstood that it leaves dozens of children mutilated-is pure nightmare fuel. But what’s even more chilling is how relatable Jacqu’s initial hesitation is. Yet he overcomes that, driven by loyalty and brotherly love. The twist that the Beast has a disturbingly human-like face really adds an unsettling layer. What if this was more than a wolf-a man, or even a monster shaped by centuries of folklore? It's almost like Jacqu’s struggle against the Beast reflects our own internal battles against fear and helplessness. Just imagine being so terrified yet finding the strength to act-it’s incredible. What’s truly unnerving is how this blend of reality and folklore still grips us today.

When life gets hard, live it one moment at a time. As you heal, those moments get further and further apart, and you find your brain going back to living on autopilot. This is why a lot of us are still alive, and have survived things that ended a lot of other people. Do whatever you gotta do, and don’t give a rip about what anyone thinks about how you do it. Just do it if it works. Don’t leave your loved ones suffering more than they already are. Even people that feel they are weak are stronger than they know, it just takes a long time to figure it out. When you get there, you’ll know it, but you still won’t be willing to tempt fate.

That was some beautiful storytelling, Mr. B. My paternal grandma would tell me stories about her childhood living in the Leonese part the Peaks of Europe during the 1920s in Spain. How they would take the sheep and goat up the mountain once the winter was over, watching the antics of baby goats while herding them; but they would round all of the herd inside the farm during the winter months and hear the wolves come down from the mountains, scratching the doors during the night - and these are brutal winter nights up there - and trying to get in the house or the barn. Only the adults were armed, but most kids would carry a small knife with them all of the time when out on the field. They would sometimes hear a bear in the distance during the spring and the very next day see the footprints outside the buildings as the bear rummaged its way through the village, looking for something to eat. Things like that, I can totally see it happening in Gevaudan at the time, too. Rural Europe was a harsh environment, especially in the areas away from the coastline. Still is. Cheers.
