A heat diffuser is a stovetop utensil which ensures that heat is evenly distributed across the bottom of a pan. This is crucial for dishes which need to simmer for a long time on low settings, and it can eliminate the common problem of burned or unevenly cooked food.

There's always at least one opportunity for Barry to put his complete lack of common sense on display in a gadget review video. That's why their my favorite. This one had several. My personal favorite was when he tried using the can opener on a pull-tab soda can but I suppose that not many people these days would know how to use one properly, so I should really give him a pass on that one. I should... but I won't. I'm just not that nice.

Barry, the sunflower seed peeler needs roasted sunflowers. Roasting dries them out, makes the shell brittle and separates the germ from the inner wall of the shell. You can usually find them in polish/russian/turkish supermarkets (or online) or you can try to roast your bird seeds. But hey now you have a bag of bird seeds for feeding birds in your garden in the winter.

Barry, the main point of the diffuser is to protect food that burns easily - it spreads the heat from the flame to the whole bottom and is most useful when you have cheap pans/pots with thin bottoms. Great when you're making jam etc. or dishes that need to simmer for a long time. The cheese test was a good demonstration - instead of making a ring of melted cheese where the flame hits the bottom of the pan, it was melting equally in the whole pan. The can opener is an old school design, hard to explain but easy to demonstrate - you position the knife part on the inside of the rim and hook on the outside (it has a small tooth that should grab the rim), push the knife in and then open by pushing forward and doing an up-down motion, kind of like single bladed scissors.

It would be great for people with a gas stove and cheap, thin, pots too! Mine just pump the heat into the food, but slowing down and distributing the heat would let the food heat way more evenly! I've seen the diffuser for the stove top being used when making sauces that split easily, it keeps the temp low and even. Also works with sunny-side eggs, once the whites begin to firm at the edges, you can cut the hob off and the residual heat from the diffuser will cook/firm up the whites of the egg while the yolk stays runny. Could also use it for melting chocolate!
@uk-hon5769
@uk-hon5769 Жыл бұрын
The diffuser works for the very gentlest simmer, one where there is barely a bubble great for making stock, curries and ragus. Most hobs don't have a real simmer, IMHO, and gas hobs have a habit of going out if you turn them down very low.

You definitely want one of those diffusers! I just bought a new one, after I accidentally threw my 30 year old one away. It is great for simmering. Bring a (beef) stew to a boil, place the pot on the lowest heat (smallest burner) on the diffuser and just let it simmer away. You can leave it there for hours and hours, just simmering around the boiling point. Won't burn your pan, keeps the stew at a perfect temperature and you'll end up with the perfect stew! My mum taught me, she learned it from her mother, who already was taught that from her mother... It is called a "sudderplaatje" in the Netherlands

The heat diffuser is amazing. Sometimes the hobs are too strong for long stews or sauces that need to cook super slowly. Like a blop every now and then. That disc lets you simmer without drying at a steady pace. Amazing for broth, ragù, soups. Anything needing a gentle heat.

The pumpkin seeds you had first were already out of their shell. Pumpkin seed shells are white while what you had there was the inside of that. You could make roasted pumpkin seeds yourself and try it out by buying a pumpkin and just taking the seeds out, then roasting them in the oven. You also sometimes have to be careful eating the sunflower seeds and other seeds from pet shops as sometimes they are sitting on the shelf for longer then they should. Depends on the petshop.

The heat diffuser is quite common where i live in the Middle East. It is used majorly when making rice. Rice needs to simmer on low heat for a while to cook the rice without the water evaporating and drying out too fast and burning the bottom. And a lot of times, the lowest heat isn't low enough. That's when the diffuser comes in. But it also can be useful when cooking any other type of grain such as quinoa.

I do have a bit of insight on the sunflower seed gadget. It looks like it's chinese in origin and chinese people absolutely love their roasted seeds in shell to crack open as a snack when gossiping, hanging out, drinking, or watching tv. The gadget is probably meant to work with a variety of different roasted seeds, from watermelon to pumpkin to sunflower. Unroasted seeds and roasted seeds are super different in the way they behave at least in terms of being able to be cracked open. I mean that being said, it could still be a piece of junk. I did find it interesting that it was difficult to find shell-on roasted seeds though

the heat diffuser (in combination with the pans you already have) could work in the cases where you need a cast-iron pan or a heavy-bottomed pot for a gentle simmer.... to test it, i would've used flour instead of cheese; an even layer of flour directly over the burner would've shown hot and cold spots in your pan, possibly having alternate rings of burnt and raw flour; while the diffuser would've given you a fairly even golden-brown 15:37 that would've worked if the fanta can was facing the other way (rotated 180); although it wasn't really meant for that; think of your tins of baked beans which don't have a ring-pull tab thingy; these would be used to hack away at the top to open the can/'tin' (in 'Ye Olde Days' before modern can openers)

They are much easier to open than pet/bird seed ones. Wait until the ones arrive off Amazon and you should be good! I like the Tijuana (or however it's spelt!) flavoured ones, spicy BBQ, yum!

I always keep marmite jars for when I make a stew and rinse them with hot water into the stock. I do it with mustard, horseradish, all kinds of jars to add flavour to things. Tbf though, I also make jam & chutney’s as gifts, so the jars get repurposed as much as I can too 😁

The heat diffuser is essentially a heat battery. Load it with heat energy and the diffuser releases it in an even and measured output. A lot of modern cooking pots have them welded into the base nowadays, like your water boiling pots in the video. The cheese melting was a great test to show off what it's for, though shows even better on cheaper pots that don't already have a heat diffuser built in already like yours does. Another test is to make two cups of coffee (or just boiling water) and place one on a fully heated diffuser to test how much longer the diffuser coffee stays warmed. This will give you good idea of how long it can hold heat, letting you to cut the hob earlier to allow the diffuser to finish cooking gentler foods, like poached eggs or sugar work, that can burn or overcook easily. Great for large batches of tempered chocolate work to keep it from setting early. *The breadstick maker would be a good mold for making chocolate stick candies, like orange or ginger sticks.*

The heat diffuser was popular when people had glass pots for cooking and coffee. Electric ranges (cookers) had hot spots that would break the glass pot.

I was literally almost crying from laughing so hard as he was trying to put unroasted seeds through that gadget. Here in the US they still sell whole (shell on) roasted sunflower seeds (usually a company called Davids) to snack on, with various flavorings on the shells (BBQ,Ranch etc) so you are more likely to eat them but crack the shells in your mouth to get off the seasoning etc. And as others have stated Barry, your pumpkin seeds were already shelled. They are usually White shells with a green seed inside (if you have ever carved a pumpkin, or made fresh pumpkin pie out of a pumpkin you would see that :) . Can dry the seeds/roast them in the oven with some salt.

When Ur getting to the end of marmite it should be laid on its side and overnight it moves to the better accessible angle. I've done it for yrs. If you don't have time to wait keep jar closed and sit in warm water to make it runnier and then tip to side and it will be good to use in about 5mins

The thing with heat diffusers is that they are mainly useful for lower quality pans, because most higher quality pans have some kind of heat diffuser built into the base of the pan. So they can still be useful but not as necessary with good quality pans.

To test the diffuser, you could make a sauce, that would normally burn on the bottom. You could also try melting chocolate, it should keep it from scorching. I have one I use to keep my spaghetti sauce from scorching in the bottom of the pan.
