My siblings and I were messing around with it as it was happening, following reddits/discords documenting the answers as we went, and if you went to a link out of order I remember there was a warning saying you might be disqualified. I don’t remember if they were tracking it via users/login or via browser cookies or what though. I was there when this happened. I was part of a group of 50 people who were solving it together on discord and helping each other, I made it all the way to karl flappy bird when a winner was announced, and I would've made it further if I didn't wake up late (I didn't start until like an hour or a hour and a half after this started)

Actually I think I joined 3 hours late, don’t remember, it was a long time ago. I found the discord link through a Reddit post about the riddle, and everyone was really cool, someone in the discord literally made a guide telling people exactly what to do throughout each step. It was fun!

The last 1 or 2 of these were all nighters, and they were pretty insane and most groups didn't finish them.
