just to get a bit more out of "vines", you could say that when the tree (that it's clinging on to) dies the vines will collapse/die as well, further emphasising the factor of her needing him-which would of been appealing in victorian context due to her portrayal of women being almost synonymous with 'an object of love' that needs a male to survive.
@24kings575 жыл бұрын
You could also say that him being a tree could show masculinity because of it being strong. Also, could show context of how women because of them being seen as objects/products at the time instead of being able to grow independently and not needing the support of men.

At 16:00 you could also say that the reason why Barrett straddles between line 7 and line 8 could perhaps highlight her impatience and desperation to be reunited with her love...idk something like that, but you'd probably have to explain that this is because in a normal Patrarchan sonnett, the volta is usually in the 8th line however in this poem the turning point appears earlier than usual :)

Poet, victorian 1806- , bed ridden addiction to painkiller, child prodigy famous around the world, married a fan of her poems, controlling father that wouldn’t let her get married so they were secret and wrote letters. About her husband before they were married. Was disowned after marriage.very Christian. When they were courting she wrote 44 sonnets about her love but they were not given till him after her marriage. He said they should be published. And to keep their identity secret they said they found the poems and translated them. First 4 lines, I think of you and my thoughts grow around you like vines and they are consuming you Next lines , not preferable to having you the actual you is better than the thought about you. Let her thoughts smash to pieces under his care the world is better and wants to be within his care Thinking of her future husband overpowers her, overwhelming intensity of love Form of sonnet, Italian, 14 lines, 8lines is the problem, 6 last lines solve problem. Line 9 turns the poem. Man to woman for love. Overwhelming love so he must see her ^ Pavtrarcom sonnet. Abbaabbac, shows the love she had was not forbidden and it was timeless. Does not completely fit the requirements. No iambic pentameter in line 3 to express feelings about the intensity of her love which is making her loose control. The turn is not line 8 but 7and 8. Also shows her love is not perfect because they can’t be together yet. Physical love- she can’t have it but is looking forward Spiritual love- she was spiritual Concept - metaphor that is throughout, her thoughts are bands of greenery and he is a tree. Nature imagery, natural love that is growing. My thoughts do twine and bud about thee as wile vines about a tree, her love takes over him and not just her, also sows the sexual side, wild, bud, twine. Sexual imagery throughout what she wants to do but she can’t do. Vines are shown through the bible biblical imagery, writing about him as if he is god like. Thee- old word at time of poet, her love is timeless, thee is used in wedding vows and religious circles and churches. Expresses intimacy.

Could you explain the line where she breaks the iambic pentameter? ‘Put out broad leaves, and soon there’s nought to see’ From where I’m sitting it looks like pretty perfect iambic pentameter; five iambs per line.
@mrbruff6 жыл бұрын
Iambic pentameter requires alternating stressed and unstressed syllables. However, in this line, the words ‘out’ ‘broad’ and ‘leaves’ are all stressed (three stressed syllables together). Why is this? Perhaps Barrett Browning is suggesting how powerful and intense her thoughts are at this moment. Here we can see that the poet is deliberately playing with the form to express her feelings about the intensity of love. Her love is so overwhelming that it is causing her to lose control, not just of herself, but of her poetic form.
@edcollyer42096 жыл бұрын
Hi there, Without wanting to sound too pedantic, I still can't see how 'out' 'broad' and 'leaves' are all stressed. The line 'Put out broad leaves, and soon there's nought to see' is just as much iambic pentameter as 'The Sylphs through mystic mazes guide their way' or 'and wash this filthy witness from your hands.' However, the line 'About thee, as wild vines, about a tree' is not iambic pentameter and would indicate that EBB is deliberately breaking the conventions of a Petrarchan sonnet. I've spoken to a number of colleagues at work about this and they seem to agree that 'Put out broad leaves, and soon there's nought to see' is an example of iambic pentameter with the words 'out' 'leaves' 'soon' 'nought' and 'see' all being stressed.

'And breathe within thy shadow'. The noun 'shadow' can be linked to the speaker's desire to be the stereotypical submissive women in the relationship. This is contextually how the patriarchal society wanted women to be, but Browning's accepting interpretation shows that women would succumb and embody the image, sometimes for their own pleasure too. In a very unusual way, this is a subtle hint of female emancipation as women are CHOOSING how to love and be loved. (maybe a bit far-fetched but still)
