'Her hair, the colour of wheat, takes on the light' - much like 'wheat' is a staple dietary food, the mother is vital in the relationship. ;)

The lines could represent the 4 characters in the Poem. The narrator, the mother, the father and the dog. The building stanzas show how he is in a memory and wants to be with them and he feels as one unit. The end stanza split up shows the 3 characters on one side of the river and him alone in the other side

On what seems like a tiny point of detail, (and definitely NOT sophisticated analysis!) I think I can offer a likely explanation. It's about why the screw of paper is used as a cork in the HP Sauce bottle. I'm old enough to have been packed off on school trips etc. with my drink - tap water - put in to a tomato ketchup bottle - a fairly common practice. Despite the thorough cleaning of the bottle, it is almost impossible to remove the scent of the sauce from the lid and so, as the water warmed through the day, it would taste faintly of ketchup when I drank it. I suggest that HP Sauce would similarly have flavoured the milk, hence the screw of paper as a cap replacement. These tiny details add to the colour and redolence/nostalgia of the verse for me.

When I first saw this poem in my year 10 class, I thought of it as this wall between his parents, one that he cannot pass yet or something was blocking him. The third stanzas regularity of syllables increases the effect of how routinely the mother set out the picnic, and maybe how much they went to a picnic by using the phrase "the same three blue cups". the detail that the poet puts in the piece of writing shows that this is a lasting memory to him

The use of four lines could show that one line is representing each member of the family with the mum dad and dog and at the end with the line on its own can show he’s isolated from them and that line represents him

May i ask about form? Not sure you mentioned it, unless it being written in quatrains is the form but i thought that was structure.

do you think that the repetition of the description of "my ....., in ......" when referring to the father and mother, is a use of parallelism, and therefore emphasises the idea that the family relationship ran smoothly, with no ruptures or an conflict - like they were all in harmony when together ?

The narrator hints to death throughout the poem and a description of his parents and other moments throughout his life. Could this be he is seeing his life at the last moment before his death and hinting to an afterlife with ‘Eden’?

Mr Bruff I'm so confused about how to add context into poetry comparison?! Please could you explain this for me? Thanks so much, your videos are the best!!
@iamcoralgrimes7846
@iamcoralgrimes7846 7 жыл бұрын
You don't necessarily have to add context to the poem because it is all there anyway, it doesn't really enhance the meaning of the poem. The only place in which I would add some contextual detail (just in my opinion) would be when analysing the fact that that the mother and father are of fixed ages and the terrier is "still two years old" which creates this idea of an almost picturesque scene (literally) which is significant because Causley's father died when he was 7. This would have been one of the only memories Causley would have had of his father which is, in turn, significant because the fact that his parents are depicted together (instead of, say, his dad at 25 and his mother much older) symbolises how strong and loving their relationship was. The fact that, in Causley's mind, they are still together, at that age, in death is quite poignant and adds to the powerful notion of the ending stanzas in which they want to reunify with their son. Sorry if that was long...

follower explores the lasting bonds of a parent relationship and how the narrator admires their parent/walking away as that explores the painful departure of a growing up ?? perhaps im not too sure
@iamcoralgrimes7846
@iamcoralgrimes7846 7 жыл бұрын
Before You Were Mine, Follower or Walking Away would go really well. With BYWM, they both share this idea that the speaker is reflecting on a photograph. They also both show a huge amount of admiration for their mother/ parents. For Walking Away, there is a really amazing comparison you could draw between the overtones of each poem. Walking away is much more about loosening one's grip on a child and about the gain of independence, whereas Eden Rock is almost more about reunification. There is also significant religious imagery in both. Hope this helped
