This video details my full restoration of a truly iconic bike in the world of cycling, a 1971 Peugeot PX-10.
Raced by legends like Eddy Merckx, Tom Simpson, Bernard Thévenet and Felice Gimondi, this Peugeot set the benchmark of quality at the time.
Built from Reynolds 531, double butted tubing and adorned in Simplex, Stronglight, Mafac & Campagnolo components, it was cutting edge for its era.
The project involved a full disassembly, thorough cleaning, and careful inspection of each part. The frame received a fresh coat of paint, preserving its vintage appeal. Worn components were replaced with period-correct parts, and all bearings were cleaned and regreased. The wheels were trued and the brakes and gears finely tuned. The result is a beautifully restored Peugeot PX10 that not only looks stunning but rides smoothly, paying homage to its legacy as a revered classic road bike.
Check out smoovelube.com/ to see the amazing lube I use on all my restoration projects.

It’s been correctly highlighted in the comments that this bike needs material bar tape and tan sidewall tires. I wholeheartedly agree but neither were unfortunately available for me at short notice as I was trying to finish the bike up for Eroica SA Concourse show. The rims are actually 27x1 1/4 and finding good quality tan sidewalls is SA in that size is impossible. The owner will however replace them once he sources a set from Europe.

PX10 owner since 1972(mine is a bit older, w/the smooth contour lugs). When you get Tressostar cloth tape, also get Velox plugs, and wind from the top- the tape is thin enough for the tape ends to tuck into the bar ends, the plugs fit nicely & only need a few turns of the expansion screw. Your paint job is much better than factory Peugeot work, and will be much more durable. Good work!!

Beautiful bike and perfect restoration. Definitely worth all the efforts! I have an almost identical PR10 from '72, luckily mine had an almost perfectly preserved frame so no need for a paintjob. For those interested in owning one of these old Peugeots, there are a few things to consider: Old french bikes have metric headsets/stems, BB's and pedal threads and it can get a headache to find replacements. Same is true for finding good Simplex derailleurs since the black plastic compound tends to crack, as you stated. Proper saddle for this bike is a Idéale 90 Rebour (also hard to find in decent condition), but the Brooks is a good replacement. The ride quality of Reynolds 531 frames is different from modern bikes; some say it feels noodly, I rather say it's springy. I used one of these frames for a restomod gravel bike and because of these qualities it's really nice and forgiving on dirt and forest roads.

Thanks Marcus 🙏🏼 You absolutely correct, there’s nothing standard on these French bikes, even extracting the crank is a challenge 😁 It does however teach you all about patience and perseverance 😉

Beautiful job! Brings back happy memories of my first "10-speed", a Peugeot UO-8, which was a heavy beast indeed. It had steel cranks and rims, but the plastic Simplex derailleurs. That opening shot of the original stem peeled open like a banana made me sad!

Great to see you back! Enjoyed every minute. I loved the look of the French frames of the period, Gitane, Peugeot. Finish not quite like the Italian of the time, but they sure looked the business. (Your work probably twice as nice as original!) 👍

I absolutely agree with you but sadly finding both in South African is challenging. Those rims are actually 27 x 1 1/4 inch and not 700C so finding tan sidewalls in that size locally is basically impossible, they need to be imported at a cost. The owner will however replace those tires once he manages to source a set from Europe 👍🏼

Nice to see you back Buff! Very nice resto of a French classic. I always loved the “flair” of the nervex lugs…match the French 😁 I am on the lookout for a 80’s French road bike frame so I can used a set of gold anaodized CLB professional brakes I used on an old Raleigh frame I raced on in the 80’s that is long since passed. Tough to find them at all and even more so in a 52cm. So I bought a Veneziano (from Imola Italy)SL frame for a Chorus Groupo that I have. The frame was produced by Patelli as evidenced by the unique integral rear derailleur cable routing and lugs. Looking forward to more of your restos and learning from them. PS is that a new painting area? I don’t remember you having a filtered fan… take care, Trevor
@BuffsVintageBikes
@BuffsVintageBikes Ай бұрын
Thank you Trevor, appreciate the feedback 🙏🏼 The owner of this bike actually had a full set of gold Simplex components up for sale not too long ago, they were simply gorgeous 👌🏼 Well spotted, I upgraded my painting area with better lighting and an extractor unit. Still some work to do with bigger and better filters but we getting there slowly but surely 👍🏼

Very nice reno, your best yet, maybe? Brilliant attention to detail; was a little surprised to see you hide your own resto label; i thought that whilst hiding it in the steerer tube was clever, you might have had it modestly (yet proudly) displayed somewhere visible! Inspiring video!

Thanks Mark, appreciate the feedback. I tried till the last to save those rivets and place the decal around them but it wasn’t working well so eventually removed them and touched up the headtube. Sadly the video doesn’t show the full struggle 😁

stunning job sir - well worth the wait I restored my own Peugeot (a 1985 531Pro model) a few years back. They are lovely old bikes. I wonder how many of today's electro-hydraulic bikes will still be around in 40-60 years time!!

Nice video!! One question: Do you treat the inside of the frame tubes? If so, how do you do it, and when is it necessary? Thanks for posting a new video!
@BuffsVintageBikes
@BuffsVintageBikes 26 күн бұрын
Thank you. The only time I treat the inside of the tubes is if I remove the BB or Seat Post and find a lot of rust. Generally SA is a pretty dry country so it’s not a big issue here. I use a product called NS1 Rust Buster and inject it into the frame using a syringe. Then block off the tubes and swirl it around to make sure it covers everything. It neutralizes rust to a blue/black hard film. Any excess can just be wiped off without damaging the paint.
