Back when they had a single transfer bar they were prone to jumping timing and locking up, and their safeties constantly would rattle loose until they didn't function. They weren't "always" excellent. I have had plenty, but back in the day there was definitely some extra care that had to be used with them.

But shotguns are all about ammo. A 12g can shoot a bewildering array of loadouts, from fine birdshot to solid slugs, with different trajectories and grouping characteristics. There have even been incindiary rounds, rounds designed to penetrate, rounds designed not to penetrate, for a resourceful handloader the possibilities are virtually endless. But the moment you put it in a semi-auto, you'll have to limit ammo selection or deal with cycling issues.

I added a tactical conversion to my 40yr old mossberg 500 (close to the 590R) added a quill, red dot, larger top safety and fell in love all over again!!!! I would like to try the RM!

I have a 500a with a similar set up that I've had for 12+ years. Magpul pistol grip with adjustable stock, angled foregrip molded into the fore-end. Also wears a Black Aces Quadrail handguard that holds an optic up top and a light/laser combo off the bottom at the end the the mag tube which is as long as the barrel. Holds 7+1 of 3" or 8+1 of 2 3/4". Slugs, bird shot or buck shot goes thru no problem. Absolute pleasure to run, for a shotgun. Couple cool AR builds as well 😊

I have owned a 590A1 for 20+ years... in fact it's my wife's 'Go to' home defender.. I fitted a Speedfeed buttstock(4 rounds) ghostring sights, oversize safety button, Surefire light and laser with remote switches and installed a mercury recoil buffer... it patterns around 20 inches at 10 yards with Federal Low Recoil #4 buck(29 pellets) I sincerely would NOT come around my house unannounced at night if my wife is home alone!

I love my 590A1 but these are pretty cool looking. I've always been a Magpul guy when it comes to furniture on my shotguns. I have them on both my 590A1 and Beretta 1301 but having an AR grip and controls would be easy to transition to. I guess I'm an old fudd who prefers the tube mag but I can see the benefits of the mag. Especially that 20 rd mag, holy s#!t. As for triggers, the 590A1 is fairly heavy but you know where it breaks. The trigger on my Beretta is very smooth by comparison.

590A1 has been my favorite pump for a long time. Had no complaints on the safety location on the shotgun and also do personally prefer the tube mag. I did notice that the 590R/RM did not have a bayonet lug so overall for me I am good with the 590A1. Might consider getting a semiauto version if they make one in the future.

@@jem_lucinamain3777 Yeah, if this takes off, I suspect they'll give the same mag fed treatment to the semiauto 940. My 590A1 is the 18.5" version but I got a +1 tube extension on mine making it a 7+1 capacity.

Want a semi-auto shotgun but in NJ mag-fed semi-auto shotguns or with a collapsible stock is considered an “assault weapon” and there’s a ban on those now…. Still gonna get my semi-auto castrated to whatever they allow… BUT THIS! Was already looking at some other AR-style pumps but Mossberg is Mossberg. I love my mossy 590, but with the mesa tactical AR stock adapter and a pistol grip...Youre not working the safety. I wear an XL glove and can not get anywhere near the tang safety. This looks promising but the cost is a little proud for it. Next is the 590G with a glock style trigger. JK

The AG on Trump’s new administration, Pam Bondi destroyed FL’s 2A. She installed ERPOs aka 🚩laws. In the “bump stock” ban you are barred from doing or installing anything that increases the rate of fire over the manufacturer. Meaning polishing your trigger is technically illegal. Regular aftermarket trigger manufacturers are starting to become reluctant to sell to FL. And a slew of other gun control laws. Collins has never said her name or brought her up. Why? Followers, sponsors he could say “call your senators” when she replaced Gaetz.

I got a rock island VR70 of the VR series, that looks very much like 590RM but it's not pump action. It's been my favorite gun to shoot, very easy to shoot and fills the AR itch i have.

Get the 590A1 and put some Magpul furniture on it if you want the tactical look with good ergonomics. I love the Magpul on both my 590A1 and on my Beretta 1301. As for the safety, it's tang mounted on top anyways so it's easy to use as compared to the cross bolt. I guess it just depends if you really want AR controls and the option of the mag.

I have a Typhoon F12. AR-15 body with an AK style cycling system. Mags come in 5, 10, 20 and 20 round drum. I put an Adaptive Tactical EX stock on it, and use a rifled choke for slugs. That bad ass mofo turns a lot of heads at the range!

If Colion has a hard time with that type of safety then he must never have gone hunting with one and had to suddenly bring his shotgun up, flip off the safety, aim, and fire at a ruffed grouse, or a duck that just popped up out of the reeds in a marsh. Quick and simple. I like the Mossberg tang safety switch because it's ambidextrous. Those magazines were already in use on the 590M. Double stack is harder to slip in a pocket.

One thing to note on a box mag shot gun. If you leave it loaded for any length of time it can out of round the shells making them not feed at all..

@ imagine stacking paper towel rolls against a flat ceiling.. Now add spring pressure from the bottom and hold that there for a day.. Those paper towel rolls are going to go out of round.. Just like the shotgun rounds. Once they go out of round, they will no longer chamber.

I would go with the RM but it only can run 2 3/4 shells. I still love 3 inch mag shells. I love the 3 inch Federal Premium #4 buck 41 pellet 2 oz load for home defense. Think I might have to start with the 590 R.

The 590RM would benefit from incorporating the SPAS-12 (SPAS-15) pump action to auto feed system. Especially with a mag feed, being able to choose between the two feels almost an essential with an AR descended shotgun.

Now I will say that mossberg is really nice. I have a 590 shockwave. But I also have a vr80 ar platform shotgun that is mag fed and it in my opinion is really nice. Plus it takes traditional ar stocks as well.

I have the 590M with just a 10 round mag/18.5in barrel and a 590 retro with 20in barrel . To be honest I LOVE the retro over the M. It's more balanced and has better ergonomics in my opinion. I know they are basically the same thing but I really don't like the feel of the bulky mag. I can only imagine how bulky a 20 round mag is. I prefer my RIA VR-80 over the 590M for a magazine fed shotgun.
