Thanks a lot You are The BEST!!! Your Method really works!!! After a couple of days of heavy showers in my city, my water became very cloudy and green and I turned it into crystal clear water less than 3 days after my ex-pool cleaning guy told me after looking at my water for 3 seconds only solution was to replace all the water (of course for a hefty fee), I said the hell w it and lost my fear of opening my filter, Thank god I did that. My 2 cents worth for people trying to clean their pool: 1-BACKWASH/CLEAN YOUR FILTER before doing anything and run the pump overnight 2-Add the algae remover you prefer and shock at least twice 12 hours apart, I did it 3 times to make it safer 3-BACKWASH/CLEAN YOU FILTER again and add water clarifier, keep running the pump 24 x 7 all this time until crystal clear 4- FULL CLEAN/WASH YOUR FILTER at the end. Check your php and chlorine levels daily during this process and adjust accordingly. 5-Once clear, run pump 8-10 hours a day depending on your environment conditions, you'll be amazed as how easy it is to DIY... Good Luck and thanks for the honest pool cleaners around...

A good substitute for Yellotrine would be Yellow Treat, Yellow Out or Swimtrine. As far as shocking every week - I would rather you keep the Conditioner level at 50ppm and check the Chlorine level every 3-4 days. Dichlor is a good chlorine for Fiberglass pools since it is pH neutral. It can be used to shock the pool also. It contains Conditioner too so it stays in the pool longer than a bag of shock. LIquid Chlorine and the Cal Hypo in this video both raise pH.

Yes. do the filter again. Add some SeaKlear clarifer also. The cloudiness is all the organic debris in the water. The Seaklear will help knock clump it up and move it to the filter. Sometimes it takes a week or so to clear. Chemicals are fine so it is just stuff in the water

Check your conditioner level. It needs to be above 40 ppm or the chlorine you are putting in will be gone in a matter of hours. After you acid wash the cartridge or replace it, add a good algaecide: I know Leslie's sells Yellow Out or get their Copper based one. Then add 4-6 gallons more of liquid chlorine. You should see some good results.

If they are stained grey after you hose them off you may need new cartridges Of course tears and rips in the material are also a good sign that they are bad. But if they are intact you can try Acid Washing the cartridges first before shelling out $200 + on four new ones. In the same "Filter" Playlist I have a video on how to Acid Wash your cartridges. Hope that helps.

It could be Copper in the water. I have a video on getting metal ions out of pool water. The green tint can be from that. It can also be some algae stuck to the walls - if you brush your pool does any dust come off? The last thing it could be is Calcium Hardness -lots of calcium in the pool can do that also. Where did you get your Calcium reading from? If there is no algae and Calcium Hardness is normal then it is probably Copper in the water. How do you fill your pool - water source?

I doubt the sand filter is damaged. You would see actual sand like at the beach on the bottom of the pool. The problem is that a sand filter only filters out 20-30 microns. Which means dead algae will just go right back into the water unless you vacuum it out in waste mode (not sure if you are doing this). I think the Pristine Blue may also be a factor. I haven't read a lot about it but it is a copper based product that may be contributing to the cloudy water.

There is a maintenance dose for Yellowtrine. You can add a little each week to prevent algae from forming.
@SPL

Yes. Add more chemicals. Is it any lighter at all or just as green. The algae probably destroyed all the chemicals you added. How big is your pool and what did you add yesterday?

Yes. Add more clarifer. Sounds like it is clearing up. Like I said some pools take longer than others.

As far as the scaling, I service about six fiberglass pools and haven't had that problem in my area. The problem I see more often is too low a pH and I am constantly adding pH up to my fiberglass pools. In a plaster pool I would drain it and acid wash it, but you cannot acid wash a fiberglass pool. Try this pool guy as he deals more with fiberglass pools. At KZbin search type in: phillip holguin. His Channel is more focused on fiberglass pools and he might have the answer for you.

That is a Zodiac Wahoo - it is made for an above ground pool but will work in a plaster pool too - but if the pool has a an area where the cleaner can get stuck the spur weight in back can get rubbed down and get ruined. It cost like $60.00 for that part. The cleaner itself sells for $165.00. It is a great cleaner but that is the drawback.
@SPL
@SPL 11 жыл бұрын
The usual charge is $200-$300 in my area depending on the pool size and the amount of alga present. It is a two or three day process so the owner is paying for your filter cleanings, time and chemicals. If it is a white plaster pool follow the steps in my "Removing Black Algae Video." You basically broadcast Algi-ban (trichlor granular) in the pool. Trichlor is the only thing that kills Black Algae. Is it a white plaster pool? if not the treatment is more complicated - let me know.

Chlorine is the only way I know of that works. Massive amounts in fact. The Green water eats chlorine for breakfast. By the third day this pool was zeroed out (read no Chlorine at all). Adding Cal Hypo to the skimmer is safe since it has a PH of 8.4 and is not corrosive. It will not damage the equipment. There is so much organic junk in a Green pool that Chlorine is the only way to Sanitize it and make it safe for swimming once it is blue.

Good advice. I bought a vinyl banner for my truck window offering my services. I got 15 accounts in one Summer by just driving around. In fact I got so many calls I had to refer them to pool guy friends to do as I am overbooked with accounts. Buying a route is a bad idea since there is nothing holding the customer to signing on with you past one month. Oh, the window sticker was $28.00 ;).

Let the pool run for 24 hours. Fiberglass does make a difference only if it is very old and the gel coat is coming off (you will see a white powder when you use if if that is the case). It just needs to circulate. I have had some pools take two weeks to clear up depending on the age of the filter cartridges and pump efficiency. Chemicals are fine so it should clear up. Don't worry, it just takes time. There is a lot of dead organic debris in the water.

Question I just see cleaned my filters (they are 1 year old, just replaced the grids last year) and I put all the chemicals in and I now have the cloudy pool. But my psi is running high above 30. Pool has been running about 4 hrs and gradually got to 30-35 psi. Do I let it keep running for 24 hrs then clean? Or clean now then let it run? Just scared since it’s running high causing circulation to be high.

It's possible. Those Hayward giant pump lids always have some air in them. Not a big fan of those, although they can hold a bunch of debris. But they never really fill all the way up with water.

Draining a green pool requires a lot of work. If you could simply drain it and refill it and make the pool sparkling blue that would be great. When you drain a green pool all the algae stays on the walls. The area by the sump pump is usually a two feet mucky swamp like mess. You will then need to chlorine wash your pool and probably acid wash it too. Most pool guys charge $400-$500 to do this. So draining your pool is not as easy as it seems. Plus we then add the cost of refilling it.
@SPL
@SPL 11 жыл бұрын
How large is your pool? What size and type of filter do you have? Are you running it 24 hours also?
@SPL
@SPL 11 жыл бұрын
Wow, that is a pretty small pool. I would say you are not using the proper algaecide. My guess is that Leslie's sold you Leslie's Algae Control which is a polyquat and works best before the algae is blooming. Here is what I suggest. Take the cartridge filter out and acid wash it or replace it - you can see the acid wash video in this Playlist: Filter Cleaning & Backwashing Videos (#21). That is probably part of the problem. The filter is not filtering out the algae.

I just purchased a home with a salt water pool and used it for about two weeks. We had some rain but afterword's no problems. I knew I needed to maintain it so I went to my local pool store with a water sample and they told me I needed to add 10lbs of Alkalinity, 3 pts of muriatic acid, 2 gallons of instant conditioner, 2 bags of shock and finally 5 bags of salt. The next day it rained and my pool turned green. I've watched your videos and have enjoyed them. What are your suggestions?
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the rain simply zeroed out the chlorine level in the pool. I suggest you purchase your own test kit so you can test your own water. Depending on the pool size you will need to add 2-4 gallons of clorox bleach and run the pool for 24 hours. I wonder if your salt system is working? How large is your pool and what salt system do you have? And is the pool a clear green where you can see the bottom or a swampy green?

Mike Pribble Yes, chlorine zeroed out. Raise the chlorine level to 10 ppm by adding 4 gallons of clorox bleach - 6% or stronger. Then run the pool for 24 hours. Do you happen to know the size and type of filter you have? I know this is all new to you.

I have a 32' above ground. The water is milky cloudy and I can not fix it. I use Pristine Blue. I have shocked it numerous times as well as used a floc treatment. Now that I see your video I wonder...when I started a shock treatment I saw a brown funk shoot out of the filter jet. Was that sand from my sand filter ? Is that what's causing it to be cloudy ? Pool and sand is only 1 yr old. Wonder if it was damaged over the winter ?

Good video. Our pool never seems to be really clear. We have a pool service that checks chemicals every other week but the water quality doesn't appear clear on a day to day basis. We had a intelliflo pool pump installed last fall. We have a sand filter and had the sand changed last fall too. Most cities will only allow to you to drain a pool into a p-trap directly into the sewer. If they catch you draining it into the street it is a $10,000-$15,000 fine in California. Most pool companies will charge you $150-$200 to drain the pool if you just ant it drained without an Acid Wash. You can rent a Sump Pump for about $80.00 & do it yourself. With the penalties for over usage her in So Cal it will cost upwards of $200 to refill a 15,000 gallon pool, maybe more.

Just bought my house in Dallas, Texas area and have a green pool disaster in the back yard. Previous owner believes the pump was damaged in the February freeze. At least kill the critters by adding a large amount of chlorine. Try 12 gallon liquid chlorine or 15 lbss. of Cal Hypo to start. That will at least take care of the bugs.

Nice Video! Very helpful. I'm just in the process of opening my pool. A co-worker suggested pumping the cover water back into the pool (to save on water costs) but my pretty clean winter water is swampy brown from all the organic matter. Was that a good idea or not? Added shock and algaecide last night, cleaned and ran the filter overnight and it's now green. Would it be worth flocking in another day or 2. Also I haven't added chlorine, should I? It's about a 10000 gallon pool. Thanks!!!

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To - SPL thank you so much for the quick reply and I’m sorry I’m still asking (I’m new at taking care of a pool). From what I saw in your other videos, I’ll first have to brush off the pool and then add the shock and swimtrine? Do you know how much of each for a pool of 20-25k gallons? Also, the tablet floater is for the slo tabs? How many tabs do I put at once? Do I do this with the other two chemicals or after? Also, what would be next steps? Wait 24 hours and vacuum? Thank you so much in advance!

You will have to scoop all of the leaves and junk out with a leaf rake skimmer attached to your pool pole. After you get all the junk out you can start the green pool clean-up process. But with a lot of leaves in the pool it is harder as they will absorb a lot of the chlorine. Best to get all of that out first.

Hello Mr. Dgbv1, I have a small 12 x 24 free form pool, 4 cartridge filter BUT I have kept my filters out and clean since last season. I have gone thru the steps you indicated shocking and a liquid algae kill day 1 then brushing and vacuuming to waste 95% then I turned off the pump and allowed the algae to settle to bottom. Day 2 I reiterate I have not put the filter cartridges in yet. The green algae has dropped to the bottom, and the water is 90% clear and not green but I did notice some green on the bottom so today I brushed again and then vacuumed to waste, and now I have shocked again 2nd time and added more algae killer. I am now running the pump On day 3 ...I can plan to add the cartridges and then run continuously. So my question is can I clear up the water before installing my CLEAN filters, or must I put the filters in and then go thru the tedium of cleaning them as you did...remember they are perfectly clean now :-)

Its looking better but its a ways to go before perfect. the pump has been running for 24 hours and will remain running with auto chorline feed plus my auto zodiac pool cleaner is now taking the vacuum duties. Hey, I have a pool it's 12X24 inground about 7.5ft deep, I have one cartridge filter, the guy at the pool store told me that's what I needed but I feel that it's been too small. The pool is constantly cloudy. I have to clean the cartridge all the time. What HP pump do you think I need?
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
Guy at the pool store is correct and incorrect at the same time. The filter size ratings from the manufacturers are not real to life. Or true to life - however that is phrased. The larger the filter the better. You've got about 10,000+ gallons of water. The smallest filter I would use would be a 320 sq ft cartridge filter. Your filter is too small. Also if your pool turns just a little with such a small filter it is a beast to recover. First thing I do at an account with a single bullet filter is replace the filter with one 3-4 times the size.

I'm on day 2..No green, pool is blue but very cloudy...I backwashed my sand filter...getting ready to brush and vaccume again...My chlorine level and ph is very high..do I need to adjust ph by adding acid prior to adding a clarifier?

Just keep running it, it will clear up in about a week.

When you say run the pool pump for 24 hours, do you wait for the 24 hours to elapse before adding chemicals? Or you set the timer for 24hours and run it with the chemicals in the pool?

Yes, run it 24 hours straight after adding all of your chlorine to the pool.

Great videos! I'm a subscriber now. After a severe green out in my 15K Gal pool(didn't remove leaves from fall) I am now at the stage where it is just milky white and it's not clearing up. Chlorine levels are still high. Should I add a bag of conditioner (cyanuric acid)? In a video I think you added it in the skimmer? Should conditioner be added once every year?
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
Sounds like your conditioner is fine. maybe clean filter again, run pool longer and add a clarified like Sealers. Always test the conditioner level before adding. Sounds like your pool is headed in right direction. Thanks for subscribing.

One more question. We have a DE filter. Would we need to backwash and reapply DE to our filter every-time we need to clean the filter during this process? Your professional opinion on that would be much appreciated. Thanks.
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
Depends on how green it is. In most cases you will need to actually open the filter and clean the grids at least 2 or 3 times. Backwashing can be effective when the pool is clearing up like at this stage in this video. It's a real pain - I know ;)

Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 I don't have a problem with the time consumption of the backwashing process, it looks quick from the videos I've seen. My issue is that (don't laugh) I have NO clue where the backwash valve or output is on our Hayward DE Extended Cycle Perflex Filter system is.....I know which Pipe it's supposed to be backwashed from...the very lowest one.......but that pipe on our system just goes horizontal about a foot and then into the ground.......I do see a short pipe that is closed with something you twist to remove... that comes out of the ground about 2 feet from the backwash pipe......but it comes straight up out of the ground about 6 inches & I'm not sure if that's it......I'm sorry if this is too personal but do you possibly think I could send you pictures of our system tomrrow & you can tell me where the backwash valve & output is? That would be really helpful as I can't find anything that looks like the videos I've seen on similar models shown in videos on here & knowing my luck, I don't want to remove or twist and turn anything unrelated. I'm not sure if you remember me but I'm the person who messaged you on here a few weeks ago on a different video and my pool in the house we just moved into had stopped putting out and taking in water....well water flow eventually just stopped entirely and the water turned dark green....so we finally got two different pool guys to come out the other day.... & the first one who seemed extremely young and inexperienced asked for 1000$ because he claimed the entire filter needed to be replaced and (we now think) made up a bunch of unnecessary antidotes for the filter issue & said that "all of that" & green pool clean up was included in the price after the filter was replaced....we now think he was just winding us up to make the most cash from us because he could tell I didn't know much at all about pools...because after we got another even more ridiculous estimate from a more popular company here of $1500 for a new filter and GP clean up...my dad called a friend of his who has been doing his own pool for years... and he said that the filter just needed to be taken apart and cleaned.......(he mentioned nothing about a backwashing step before doing so)....and what do you know....when we hose down...soak....and re-hose-down all those skinny filter tubes... (which were filthy green stinky and mucky btw)....and put it back in...clear out the pump skimmer..turn the system on for a few minutes......it's putting out and taking in water perfectly now....so that's why I think both the PROs who gave us estimates just wanted to make a good amount off of us or just didn't want to deal with cleaning an old model Filter. (the first younger guy said it was an extremely old model anyways, it's an EC65A or EC75a by Hayward, which I looked up & they still sell.....)..because it seems like a good cleaning is all was needed of the filter they both said needed to be replaced........anyways that's where we are now, with a filter that works fine as far as we can tell, a dark green pool and the means to put out maybe 200-300$ to clean the green pool problem now ourselves....but certainly not the 500$ that the pros asked us for to do that separately, not this month anyways. I understand that they're just trying to make a living & that's how a lot of people do business, so I'm not holding their methods against either of them, but we personally are on a tight budget & moved recently so just can't afford their services at the moment. I've watched your two videos & the green pool clean up looks fairly simple & doable with the right amount/type of chemicals....but like I said....the backwashing is the only thing at this point that has stumped me. Please help!

Jen Tuesday That is a bump filter I believe. Here is the PDF manual on it: www.hayward-pool.com/pdf/manuals/Perflex-EC65A-EC75A.pdf You don't actually backwash it but stir the DE around with the bump handle. Not the most efficient filter.
@twdjt6245
@twdjt6245 10 жыл бұрын
Swimming Pool Tips, Reviews & How To -MrDgvb1 ok, thanks for the response, the manual really helped & I'll be following the instructions exactly on there when it comes to cleaning the filter. Glad you let me know that it's not much of an efficient filter, so I will know to start saving up for a new one. I have no choice but to clean the green pool WITH it for now, but hopefully we'll be able to afford to replace it by New Years. (In FL, so we plan to keep the pool open year-round). One more round of questions regarding this though...... I read on troublefreepool.com that Stabilizer & PH need to be adjusted BEFORE starting the process.....a thread recommended the Stabilizer to be around 30ppm & PH on the "low side"at between 7.2 and 7.4....would you recommend this yourself.....or should I just go all in guns blazing with the chlorine without worrying about the CYA & PH? PS: If it helps in your response, the CYA was pretty much Zero when the pool was in good condiiton, so I'd imagine that it's not any higher now.....I never had any issues with chlorine expenditure then....only used up less than 2 gallons per week... so I never thought it was necessary to adjust it......
@SPL
@SPL 10 жыл бұрын
Jen Tuesday JUst add some CYA to your pool. You can do this easily by buying 10 lbs of Dichlor granular at your local pool store. Half of dichlor is conditioner so you will be adding about 5 lbs of CYA in. It can be broadcasted directly in the pool also since it is not pure CYA in a sense. That way you will raise the chlorine level and the CYA at the same time. Test the CYA a few days later and see if more is needed. Assuming your pool is 15K gallons the 10 lbs of dichlor will raise your CYA to 30 ppm give or take.

This pool is nothing. I would like to see you do this to my mothers pool years ago when we first got it. -it is about 38,000 gallons (requires 80gpm, i forget) -has 1-1/2 plumbing (max flow 60gpm) -a sand filter with a max flow rate of 66gpm -has 3 60ft tall Pin oak tree's with in 120 feet that drop stuff in spring and leaves in winter plus acorns -Did have a 40ft tall pine tree 15ft away hanging over it dropping pine cones and needles -Did have a 150ft long 15ft tall hedge row that was home to a colony of probably 200 Great Tail Grackles that thru the bird poop from the nest into the pool and all along the side of it for w.e reason -Half of the valves didn't work All that shet just goes into the pool. As much as you scoop on it there is always more. We would get it clear with a massive blob of leaves and algae in the corner of the deep end then get it when we can see it. i dont want to even imagine all the money we wasted on chemicals learning how to deal with this pool. Lesson i learned is to cover it. In the summer too. ive got one of those cheapo winter tarp covers, folded the sides up so its just a little wider than the pool sewn it, rolled up a bunch of those 1$ swim noodles in the front lip sewn that and run a 100ft rope thru it and put it on a reel. Next step is to put a solar cover underneath the tarp and sew that together so i don't have to deal with it sinking over time anymore. It will clear up without chemicals covered too btw. Keep the thing covered is my advice for a green pool. thx for ur videos. ive been going to them alot the since finding them the past few years
