You're amazing! If it wasn't for you, I'd still be fighting w/my pool. My pool had turned in to what looked like swamp due to all the rain we're getting here in Florida. This fight went on for a week using our usual pool maintenance regimen, all to no avail. Finding your video has ended that fight & has brought our pool back to normal over night! It took lots of time & money, but never-the-less I'm a very happy camper right now. THANK YOU!!!!

I just want to thank you so much for the video!!! Me and my wife just bought a house with a pool for the most part was maintained. Then close to the end of escrow the sellers stopped taking care of it and let me tell ya we asked a pool guy to see what he can do and he wanted to drain, clean, and fill. This video saved us money and California 20,000 gallons of water. I went step by step and the pool looks better than when we first looked at the house. You are the pool whisper.

Thanks a lot You are the best!!! Your Method really works!!! After a couple of days of heavy showers in my city, my water became very cloudy and green and I turned it into crystal clear water less than 3 days after my ex-pool cleaning guy told me after looking at my water for 3 seconds only solution was to replace all the water (of course for a hefty fee), I said the hell w it and lost my fear of opening my filter, Thank god I did that. My 2 cents worth for people trying to clean their pool: 1-BACKWASH/CLEAN YOUR FILTER before doing anything and run the pump overnight 2-Add the algae remover you prefer and shock at least twice 12 hours apart, I did it 3 times to make it safer 3-BACKWASH/CLEAN YOU FILTER again and add water clarifier, keep running the pump 24 x 7 all this time until crystal clear 4- FULL CLEAN/WASH YOUR FILTER at the end. Check your php and chlorine levels daily during this process and adjust accordingly. 5-Once clear, run pump 8-10 hours a day depending on your environment conditions, you'll be amazed as how easy it is to DIY... Good Luck and thanks for the honest pool cleaners around...

Great video. I work in the industry myself and I have been taught a different way of shocking a pool. A normal size residential pool like this one in the video we would put around 10L of liquid chlorine followed by 5L of HCI. Afterwards, we would walk around the pool edge with pool algaecide and put a sparkle cube in the pump basket.

Rarely do I drain a pool. I would try this method first and I think it will work. Even if you have Mosquito larvae in the pool this will work. If there is a lot of leaves and junk on the bottom, scoop that out first, then brush the pool and follow this procedure. It will work. It may take a week or two to fully clear up but it will.

I'm glad it is looking better. I would vacuum it out when you can see the bottom and then clean the filter again. If you still see algae on the walls, yes add more Swimtrine. If it is just cloudy water than the algae is all dead. It won't hurt to add more just to be safe.

I don't worry about the pH in a green pool at all. I wait til it is clearing before I add acid. With the amount of chlorine you will need to add, the chlorine will be effective. Yellow Out even works better with a high pH. I also like to load the floater with Trichlor tablets and that will sometimes lower the pH down also as I usually will add the maximum to the pool floater or off-line chlorinator. I hope there isn't a VHS tape in my mailbox tomorrow ;)
@SPL12 жыл бұрын
Everyone has there preferred method. I was taught to do it this way and I guess I am now an "Old Dog." I usually save the vacuuming for day two. As far as pH, by sticking 5 tablets in the floater, that about does it in most cases. I will check the pH the next time out and adjust it accordingly. With this pool my main goal was to see the bottom again ;)
@SPL12 жыл бұрын
I am sorry for any misunderstanding. You still need to super chlorinate the pool since Swimtrine plus works off of the existing chlorine level. If it is zero it won't work. It needs to be above 3.0. Yellowtrine will eat the chlorine so you would need to add more to counter the effect. Just add the chlorine and repeat the process and add the rest of the Swimtrine Plus bottle. Your pool with then dramatically clear up.
@SPL12 жыл бұрын
Swimtrine works well, I just have more experience using Yellowtrine as it was what I was trained to use when I first started back when I was 16 years old. The Old Timer pool guy that trained me only used Yellowtrine. You can use Swimtrine as it is proven to work. Most of the stuff they carry at Leslie's is just water with coloring (stuff doesn't work). Applied Biochemist who makes both chemicals created products that really work. All the pool guys use their products exclusively. Just dilute it.
@SPL12 жыл бұрын
Yes, the filter will get clogged up for sure. That it why I suggest 2 or even 3 cleanings. Most green pools won't clear up unless the pool is circulating. Most pools don't have a recirculate mode anymore, especially a cartridge type filter. So the bottom line is; filter will get clogged and will need to be cleaned 2 or 3 times for a pool as green as this one. It is all part of the process. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment.
@raindropsify12 жыл бұрын
I followed this procedure but with "stop yellow" algaecide. It works! Thanks! I saw this about a week after adding a gallon of acid to the pure pool to the pool. My question is, is it ok to add acid to the pool about $14000 gallons of water?
@SPL12 жыл бұрын
Use the same process but instead of the Shock (Cal-Hypo) use just liquid chlorine. So you may need 2 cases (8 gallons). Let me know how it comes out. Hope that helps.

If you are putting calcium hypochlorite in the skimmer while there is an in-line chlorinator with trichlor tablets in it you can cause an explosion.

@SPL12 жыл бұрын
Your local pool store should have most of these chemicals. If not you can get them online with little trouble.If you can't find the Cal Hypo Super Shock you can use 4 extra gallons of liquid chlorine (8 total). You can substitute the Yellowtrine with a comparable algaecide like Yellow Out, Swimtrine, Yellow Treat. As long as it says Algaecide it should work.
@SPL11 жыл бұрын
Just use more liquid chlorine and forgo the shock as it will cause excessive calcium build-up on the salt cell. You can use Tri-chlor shock or Dichlor but I suggest 2 cases (8 gallons) of fresh chlorine from a pool store. That should do the trick. The Cal-hypo shock can be used safely in most pools but seems to cause a lot of build-up on salt cells.
@SPL11 жыл бұрын
That depends on how you look at it. There is a drought here in So Cal so filling a 20,000 gallon pool back up would be adverse to that. There is also a $10,000 fine for draining a green pool into the street. If you have a p-trap that is the only legal way -directly to the sewer. The algae will neutralize most of the chlorine that you add -plus the Yellowtrine I use here coverts the chlorine to a less toxic Bromine - which further destroys the impact. So this is the cheaper & friendlier method.
@SPL11 жыл бұрын
If the Sun hasn't worn the label off you should be able to read your filter information. There is usually dirt on the bottom of a cartridge filter. If you had a sand filter getting the top off would be harder and it would have 200-300 lbs of sand in it ;). Cartridge filters are held on by a clamp and the lid is easy to get off to access the cartridges and hose them off. I have videos and cleaning all the major brands in my "filter cleaning" playlist on my Channel.
@SPL12 жыл бұрын
You can use Swimtrine (made by the same company Applied Biochemist as Yellowtrine). I buy my Yellowtrine by the 25 lb bucket so it is more affordable for me to use Yellowtrine. I find that it is very effective. A copper based algaecide like Swimtrine is supposed to be more effective, but that is debatable. I find that they are equally effective. Plus Yellowtrine is easier to broadcast. Adding Yellowtrine with liquid chlorine is a very effective chemical combination that kills the algae.
@SPL12 жыл бұрын
You can use YellowOut sold by Leslie's. If you have a DE filter it needs to be charged with DE. The filter shown here is a Cartridge filter and doesn't require DE. Your local mom & pop pool store should carry YellowTrine and Swimtrine as I know Leslie's only sells there products. But the Yellowout should work just the same.
@SPL11 жыл бұрын
The liquid chlorine seems to reacts very well with the algaecide I use - Yellowtrine. It also reacts well with Yellow Treat & Yellow Out. But it is weak. One bag of Cal-Hypo shock has 3 times the available chlorine. Since the algaecide, algae & organics in the green pool eat chlorine like candy you need to add a lot. It seems like too much but it isn't. If you watch the day two video you will see that everything I added was gone the next day. So the shock is needed to supplement the liquid.
@SPL11 жыл бұрын
Usually if the pool is green, the filter will be too. That is why you need to clean it right away so you can get decent flow at least. If you brush it and add the chemicals and leave the filter dirty, there will be no circulation and you are just wasting your time. The pool needs to filter out the algae for this to work. So cleaning the filter multiple times is a must and the initial cleaning before is especially needed for this to work. Hope that clarifies it for you.

Skim the bottom first the best you can.Then brush that also. Algae tends to stick to the walls more strongly than the bottom. It should brush off easier from the bottom.

I find that for the quickest green pool clean-ups: clean the D.E. filter and run the pool on filter mode. That way the dead algae will stick to the D.E. and then you can clean the filter a second time and eliminate a lot of the algae that was in the pool. Shock it on filter mode after the first filter cleaning is done.

Your salt generator is actually making Chlorine in it's elemental form with the aid of salt and electricity. Liquid chlorine is just a processed form of Chlorine made by bubbling chlorine gas through a solution of caustic soda which produces sodium hypochlorite. This is pretty much what your Salt System does. When you shock your Salt water pool, the chemicals will dissipate in a day or so, and the salt generated Chlorine will take it's place, once the Salt system is up and running.

I always use "Filer Mode" but some people do say that they get good results with "recirculate." Running it for 24 hours in "filter mode" seems to work fine in most cases. You can try "Recirculate" if you want. Let me know if that works good and I can update the video advising such. You are just bypassing the filter basically.

Should be okay. All the floc will do is clump up the organic debris so that it will sink to the bottom or be filtered out. The Aluminium Sulphate in the floc just makes the organic particles larger by bringing them together. I would run the filter for 24 hours still to help clear up the water and it will make the chlorine more effective.

I would still use the Yellowtrine. You can just pop the lid off and clean it while they are in the tank. Just get the hose in all the nooks & crannies - especially the middle where DE piles up. Then just put the lid ans clamp on and backwash it for a minute or so until water comes out clear. Taking it apart will give you brain damage and also damages the grids - the tops are super fragile and you can crack one in the top manifold pretty easy. They are $36.00 each.

I wouldn't drain it. My pool is almost nine years old and it has never been drained. On average I loose about 2 ft of water her in So Cal each Summer. The Calcium Hardness may just be your fill water in your area. Mine is about 500 and my shower head in my bathroom is always getting clogged up. TDS - I would retest again.

I have huge issues with my pool right now. It all started with a trip to Leslie's when they told me to raise my PH by adding Soda Ash. They told me to add 7 lbs to my 10,000 gallon pool. What followed was a terrible yellow stain that would only come off with vitamin C. I started to to a stain removal process with purrs ascorbic acid, which took the stain of with in minutes. I used a metal sequestering agent and a CU Later pouch in my skimmer. I kept the chlorine around 2.0ppm. Shortly after that my pool turned into a swampy green mess. I did a treatment of albs of shock with Yellow Clear, waited 8 hours brushed the pool and added 3 more lbs of shock. My pool was blue and stain free the next day but extremely cloudy to the point where I couldn't see the pool. My PH was getting low so I used the Pool Calculator to determine the amount Borax to use. Again my stain came back and my pool is getting green. Im about to just fill it with dirt. Any suggestions?
@SPL10 жыл бұрын
I hear you. Pools are a pain in the... By raising the pH rapidly to 8.0 or higher or by shocking your pool 5 ppm or higher, the Metal treatment is short circuited. The stains will reform when either or both of these happen. I suggest pulling the CuLator out and putting it away for now - those things are pricey. Get your pool balanced again and blue. Wait until the weather cools off and then try the process again. Keep your chlorine at zero for a couple of days and then raise it slowly over the week and keep ot at 2.0 or lower as long as possible. With 10K gallons it won't take much to raise it so be careful. Keep the pH at 7.4-7.8 for as long as possible with no spikes in the high direction. The Culator can take up to 30 days to extract the metal ions so keep the sequestering agent in the pool by adding the maintenance dose. I suspect there were metal ions in the water and when you raised the pH they dropped out and stained the pool. Metal in the pool is a weird thing and odd things happen. So basically I am telling you to live with the stain until the water temp and air temp make it feasible to do the treatment without the pool turning green on you. Since you know the Ascorbic Acid will lift the stain I would relax and wait. Water temp of 65 or lower would be good.

Loyal follower of your channel. Before cleaning the filter, shouldn’t you backwash the filter? Also, regarding the “shockwave” product, did you remove both skimmer and pump basket before pouring in the shock or did you leave them both in? For chlorine, you used a full case but what if you used 2 cases of chlorine, would that have been better or a “waste of money”? I ask these questions because my client hired me to clean his heavy algae green pool. I have so many questions that I must know in order to help get this pool back into shape. Please help. A simplified method of shocking a pool like this. Delude required amount of shock in a bucket with water strait into the pool. Run the pump without the filter cartridges to recirculate the water for two hours after adding shock, and floculant. You don't want to try filtering the water while doing this! Turn the pump off after 2 hours and let the pool sit for 24-48 hours. Everything it's killed will settle to the bottom clearing up the water. Slowly Vacuum on waste.

Great video! Thank you so much for all of your informative vids. I'm new to the pool business, we have our first green pool rehab scheduled. Is it standard to mark up the cost of chemicals for this? If so how much? The hardest part about getting into the business is try to figure pricing so any other info you could give me would be much appreciated. Thanks!
@SPL10 жыл бұрын
Price factors: how green the pool is - live mosquito larvae means more filter cleanings - how large to pool is and how many filter breakdowns it needs. So a small pool like in this video runs about $200.00-$250.00 with two or three filter cleanings. That will cover the chemical cost and labor. A larger pool $300-$350. More than 3 filter cleanings then go with the $350.00 number. Larger pool also requires more chems. Basically you want to make some money and get the account also for service. So you can go down in price a little sometimes if they want monthly service once it is clean. Have fun ;).

All that is just up-selling. You just need Yellowtrine, and 8 gallons (or more) of liquid chlorine. I don't use anything else. Shock (cal-hypo) is bad for your salt cell. It raises the pH too high and will cause calcium build-up in your cell. Liquid chlorine or Dichlor (granular chlorine) are safe for a salt pool. After your pool clears up and is blue again, add the salt (clean cell 1st) and ck your Conditioner level. If it is lower than 50ppm, add Conditioner (I have a video on my Channel).

I don't love them as much anymore... but I did get a call from a pool plasterer on one I did last month. He was there on a Thursday for an estimate and the pool was a swamp mosquitoes & Tadpoles. I showed up the same afternoon. On Friday when he came back to drop off tile samples he had to get my number from the customer and call me. It was milky blue already and he was amazed. Like you, it is nothing new to us but I like to see the customer's reaction and in this case the pool re-modeler's ;)

Thank you for the Video!!! Just a quick question, just bought a house with a pool 5 months ago and my pool is not in that bad of a condition but it still has algae in some parts of the pool and at the bottom. ( Yellow ) My pool guy gives me a bunch of excuses but has never been able to have the pool at 100%. His last " excuse" was that I might have a leak. Honestly, I am just a little frustrated. I am hoping you could help me ... Thank you!!!
@SPL4 жыл бұрын
It may be that the CYA is really high and the chlorine is effective. I suggest trying a PoolRx unit in your pool.

Just watched video....I'm helping my neighbor with his pool. But he used well water to fill it...it turned green I've shocked it 2 times n got all chemicals adjusted but still green...could it be metal in the water from well? If so how can I get it clear again tia
@SPL2 жыл бұрын
It sounds like metal - if it is tint vs actual algae. Try adding a Culator 4.0 to the pump basket and add a metal sequestering agent to the pool. Look for something by Jacks Magic. That should remove the metals.

Hi my pebble tec pool has spots that look like they are stained from a recent algae nightmare I just passed. Is there a way to take those stains off other than draining the water and doing an acid wash? Thanks for your help
@SPL8 жыл бұрын
+Cash Miller Try sprinkling a couple of bags of Cal Hypo over the spots. It will leave a white powder on the bottom that you can vacuum up the next day. This will usually do the trick. Dichlor will dissolve too rapidly and Granular Trichlor is too harsh. They sell it in 1 lbs bags at your local pool store.
@davidorgun68386 жыл бұрын
Cash Miller I just drained my pool today. Those algae are terrible to remove. I used chlorine with water and acid wash it and now it’s very clear!! Took me whole day to get it done.

You are a wealth of information. Your videos are great. But one thing you said in this video that I don't totally agree with is that you say the yellow trine kills the algae not the chlorine. Chlorine by itself will kill algae. Never had to use anything else. Anyway I keep watching your videos. They great. You helping lots of people.

Hope you see this soon My pool is a Coleman above 18*24 It's starting to turn green how much stuff so I use? Also this may sound like a dumb question and maybe this is why it keeps going yellow green, what's the difference between plain Chlorine and shock. I've only been using shock, cause I thought it had chlorine in it. I'm confused ugh help please I've spent so much money
@SPL4 жыл бұрын
Would try liquid chlorine in there. It may work better than the sock you are using. And also clean or backwash the filter.

Ok I can put in a new filter or clean it. I don't have a sand pump yet. My pump doesn't circulate the water very good at all. So only Liquid Chlorine? Nothing else Thank You So So Much For Your Help

Can you vaccume it insted of brushing it also i have a above ground pool will that make difference? and how many bags of shock will i need? thanks
@issamabdalla181911 жыл бұрын
So what you're saying is that the shock won't attach to the d.e in the filter if I do that? Even if its on filter mode? Because I've read from many people that it has to be on recirculate, in order to bypass the filter
@gwengwen45352 жыл бұрын
Hey there, hope you check this post often, because we just got an intex with a sand filter and neglected it for one week, not realizing that the pump wasn’t working well (we fixed that issue.) At this point, I’ve cleaned sides as well as I can, backwashed the filter a few times, and am headed to the store to get shock, chlorine, and green trine. It isn’t a large pool, it’s only 18x12, but I’m hoping the kids can play in it sooner than later, it’s going to be a warm week coming up. Do you have any suggestions at all for me, before going forward? It got pretty green, real fast there. Hoping I can get it blue fast, but also safe for kids. I do have ph strips, but I think they’re for soil not sure lol.. thanks so much😅
@SPL2 жыл бұрын
Keep the chlorine at 5-10 ppm all week long after you get it in shape. Make sure there is some Cyanuric Acid in there as well. Use this site to calculate everything: www.poolcalculator.com/

When you brush off the side of the pool, do you also brush the bottom? I have a lot of debris on the bottom of my pool too.
@gvndual843 жыл бұрын
Why shock and liquid chlorine? And I noticed you didn’t test the water first (ph and so forth). A lot of the other videos say to do this first. Which should I do?
@SPL3 жыл бұрын
My goal is to bring the chlorine level up quickly. You can certainly check for the pH and CYA but in most cases the pool is green because it has no chlorine in it.
@pinkboirichy7 жыл бұрын
do you also need to check your cya before starting the process? Or i can just start the process they way you have shown on the video.
@SPL7 жыл бұрын
Just start the process. Nothing matter much until the pool is blue again.

@dwniu20005 жыл бұрын
Before putting any chlorine,Make sure chemical is in right range for shocking , at least ph 7.0 to 7.2 and cya not over too high , if either of these is too high, you'd better correct them first ,otherwise shock won't work.

Selinda McNeil If you go to Troublefreepools.com they will have a write up on the slam method. Basically adding liquid chlorine or bleach in large amounts. Similar to what I do here.

How do you square this with the BBB method? Do you just use the BBB after you initially do this treatment? I also noticed you used tri-chlor tabs, which isn't part of the BBB method. Thanks.
@SPL8 жыл бұрын
A few tablets while you clear up a swamp is acceptable - after the pool is blue the BBB Method can be initiated.

Hey, I have a couple of questions regarding how to clear a green pool.
@omisonofgod12 жыл бұрын
i recomend first to vac to waste as much as u can from the bottom of the pool , like that the filter wont have to work as much then brush the pool and shock it always go by the product label when adding chemicals no need of guessing and of course adjust ur ph we know at a hight ph clorine wont be as afective recommend to put some algeacide and let it run for 24 hours
@vaskylark9 жыл бұрын
I have been told by pool professionals to never pour shock or any other chemicals through the skimmer. Now I am really confused as you poured the shock into skimmer? I have a vinyl pool with a sand filter. Yay or nay on adding chemicals through skimmer?
@SPL9 жыл бұрын
vaskylark I spoke to the chemist who manufacturer this and as long as you run the pool for 8 hours it will not cause any issues. It is a fine powder and safe in the skimmer. Never had any issues. You can always just use liquid chlorine which is just as powerful as a bag of shock and less expensive.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question.
