The problem with this process is the high spots as the denim comes around on your platum and stuffs up a grind

This is a cool way to remove the grit from sandpaper and still have the paper left. You could also clamp it to wood or worktable a couple inches above the cut, and use a metal file or rattail to file/sand it off the edge :-)

Why not put tape around the whole thing and then flip it so the sand is facing out?

What about inconsistencies due to high spots caused from the denim and your glue up? There are much better videos on how to make your own sanding belts out there. Sir, good try. But try again.
