Sonic Origins is Disgusting

As a fan of classic Sonic, Sonic Origins is disgusting to me. While I'm confident the games will look and run great, that doesn't excuse some of the decisions made around this title. In this video, I talk about some of the more egregious mistakes made with this release, and why they gross me out.

My biggest problem i've seen so far is that I find the new-old music tracks in 3 & Knuckles feel quite cheaply made. Sounds like a generic midi to genesis converter result and i can't believe Jun Senuoe worked on it. The tracks lack treble and feel flat, skipping samples of the original melody etc. They seem even cheaper made than the ones in the leaked 1993 Sonic 3 beta prior to (most likely) Jacksons involvement. At least the new animations, which definitely are gorgeous, are available on KZbin. I will likely wait for the PC version to be on sale some day and sound mods being available. Hopefully they'll also have removed Denuvo by this time

Yeah they obviously did not correctly translate the prototype versions to the game. They literally sound like midi. I actually sort of like launch base prototype, but in origins it sounds like GARBAGE.

don't even buy it for sale if you have a PC, there is a mod for sonic 3 called "Sonic 3 A.I.R. (Angel Island Revisited)" that has all the Origins features plus countless more. Origins has no graphics options so you're forced to play the games in fucking bilinear upscaling!! Sounds crazy right? Not even a scanline filter or pixel perfect, fucking bilinear upscaling! It's not only made by greedy men, but by retards for sure! While on emulators you have RGB, Composite and much more old tv shaders to make the game look as intended in the 90s, and also pixel perfect to give them a modernized look. Not to mention the countless quality improving mods that Sonic Origins has 1% of those features, such as widescreen and nothing else. Seriously why should you mod Origins when modding the classics is the definitive way of playing them? There is not one reason for a sane human to buy Origins on a PC even for half a dollar.

This is one of the best videos I've seen covering Origins and your criticism is very fair and valid, if anything I reckon it may have still been too fair haha. These are some of my favourite all time games but people need to take the nostalgia goggles off and (or) look at what your actually getting here. $40 is a ludicrous price (not even counting the dlc price) for what's on offer here and I'm glad you mentioned the Genesis collection from 10 years ago as comparison. To be honest pretty much every Sonic collection/anniversary game like this that came before it has offered more to the buyer than what Origins is, Sonic Jam which released like 25 years ago offered more, giving you Sonic 1-3 & Knuckles as well as an awesome museum 3D world, with all the soundtracks, gallery mode and movie mode. A big criticism you didn't mention was the changed soundtrack for many of the levels from Sonic 3. Of which are all major downgrades compared to the original. It's really sad to see this is what Sega have become now days, after selling off all there iconic arcades in Japan you just have to ask why is next for them, as they clearly aren't as financially secure as some may think. I think we could be more fair on Origins if as you said they didn't delist all other versions of the games (other than the Ages versions, which is just Sonic 1 & 2 anyway), forcing players to buy Origins if they want to play the original Sonic's. Origins for me is an easy pass and something I can't recommend to anyone. Anyway, great video and I hope more people will see it as appose to the bought reviews of Origins on KZbin who've been given the game for free and are all mostly saying it's great.

Personally I think the collection on its own is pretty good but I have many gripes, most of what you said I agree with, and the fact they just ported the mobile games over with minor changes and putting a high price tag on the collection when they were free and ad removal on the apps was really cheap.

Why is nobody bringing up how short the Classic Sonic games are? They have around give or take 15-20 hours maximum combined, especially if you played them before. Yakuza remastered collections meanwhile costed 60$ at launch and had 3 games that have combined total of 80 minimum. (330 hours if you 100% all of them!)

@@tryx.z These aren't traditional remasters, Sonic 3 & K, is build from the ground up, it shares the same engine as Sonic Mana and the versions of 1, 2 and CD on here they could have easily made Amy like how they did Mighty and Ray for Mania and even Metal Sonic, not only that they could have put Knuckles in Sonic CD too Though this wasn't made by the people who did these remasters, except from Sonic 3&K that was done by them and the animations, maybe som other things I'm unsure, the other games are ports of mobile versions and the rest I think is done by Sonic Team or Sega and they put it all t ogether, if they just let the people behind Mania and the remasters do the whole thing they'd have done all of that and even more, then it would be worth the price tag Modders will probably do all of this and more for the game within weeks even adding in other characters, games and even new islands

Your criticisms are pretty valid in my book! Those restrictions, delisting old sonic games, and the money-grabbing choices they made along with no physical release do hinder this game by quite a fair margain. But I personally believe that this collection is important. Since not only is it the first time the complete Sonic 3 & Knuckles game was combined, since mega collection probably, and since these games aren't emulated, they are ported and completely remade from the ground up for current hardware, making them fresher and a more genuinely enjoyable experience. I personally believe that if they want to keep preserving these games, they should put the delisted games back up as they should be, and not make a new collection for these games, since this IS the definitive Classic Sonic collection, and just keep porting Origins to future consoles. Origins is important for Sonic, but there are many bad decisions that hold it back from how truly great it could be. Yes, it is kind of annoying how they keep releasing these games over and over again on every piece of hardware, but in all honesty, I respect it. But what I do not respect, is the removal of those games when Origins came out. That is scummy. I really hope they get their shit together with this game.

It is a game that belongs to a completely different genre, and it is a completely new game and not a collection, so they do not compete in any way, and the turtles game has the disadvantage of not being better than the original arcades and even uses the mediocre Turtles from the 80's series (the worst Turtles series), instead of the superior versions from the original comics or the 2003 and 2012 series which are infinitely better. Not to mention that it is only one game that lasts at most 2 hours and has little replayability content, , as opposed to the Sonic Collection that are four games in one package, that even if you are not interested in unlocking the extra content are at least 7 or 8 hours of gameplay with Sonic Classics in maximum quality.

Personally, what bugs me most about Sonic Origins and what has made me decide not to buy it is the way it handles lives. Sonic Origins uses unlimited lives and replaces earn-able lives with coins used to unlock bonuses. In order to play with limited lives the way these games were originally designed, you have to play in "classic mode", which puts the games in 4:3 and you cannot earn coins in. If you want any of the benefits of playing the Origins versions of these games over the originals, you are forced to play in the game's less engaging easy mode. The other thing that's a big driving force for me not wanting this collection are the "new" Sonic 3 tracks. I think them being unable to get the MJ tracks is unfortunate but understandable, and I would've been content with the prototype tracks for those songs. My problem is that they made new renditions of those prototype that sound *horrible.* I honestly don't understand why they didn't just use the prototype tracks as they originally were instead of making shitty recreations of them. The last thing is something that doesn't personally affect me, but is still really lame. Why can't you play as Knuckles in Sonic CD? It doesn't affect me much because I don't like Sonic CD and I don't really like playing as Knuckles that much, but the fact the option wasn't there both sucks for people who wanted to play CD as Knuckles and just goes to show the amount of care and effort being put into this.

Sonic 1 2 and 3 now have a separate button for super transformations, That's right, You no longer have to have Tails and Knuckles go super just to use their abilities, These small changes are a game changer. As for Origin's full price, You're telling me it's as bad as paying 70$ for a PS5 game when even Microsoft isn't even pushing that? Only Sony and other third party devs are demanding that, So yeah 45 isn't much for 4 classic Sonic games, 4 upgraded versions of said classics, a story mode that them all together, plus animated cutscenes, and Mania adventures? Shoot, add a 3D hub world and we'll finally have Sonic Jam 2.

I'm a die hard Sonic fan. I even own all seven Chaos Emeralds (I bought them on eBay, these games would be so much shorter if anyone else thought of that). But even I'm on the fence on this one. The only means I have to play S3K at the moment is my hacked SNES mini classic, which is far from ideal. But with the DLC BS, the missing music, the new Super Sonic theme sounding like some Sonic 4 crap, and the general lack of meaningful content, I absolutely don't think this is worth the high price. If it had more games added, like 3D Blast, the Game Gear/Master System games, maybe it'd be worth it. But £37.99 for 4 old games and some fluff? Even I'm having trouble deciding if I'm that stupid.

You can play S3K freakin everywhere right now. Ever heard of A.I.R? It's Sega's fault not figuring out what to do with the music choice, hence so making the game itself less avaible. This price tag is kind of absurd, they're the best version of these games (maybe except for S3K). But we had better deals a decade before Origin drop. For each one I mean (except S3K). I praise what the devs did and the love put into it, it's not their fault.

I honestly couldnt agree more with every point you made, I was actually incredibly excited when i saw the title "Sonic Origins" in my sub box, thinking it was maybe a sequel/prequel to mania since hyper potions were doing the music, after seeing it i was disapointed to say the least not appauled yet, but disapointed that what i thought was a completley un announced brand new title was just a re-re-re-re-release of the same 4 games i already own. But i was still like ok, widescreen and semi HD thats cool and the second i saw the price 32.99 for 4 games from 1991-1994, im good. Yeh they added things but, at least imo, it doesnt come close to justifying what is actually being sold, the main part being 4 ports of old games with little to no changes, Arguably the best thing to come out of it is the cutscenes and i feel horrible for saying it but they come close to roughly 5 mins of content and can be watched on YT for free, i wanted to support the artists as i adore their style but the inner bitch in me couldnt get over the fact that it would also be going to SEGA and convincing them that this was a brilliant idea. Also the additional poiint you said about the delisting is even worse on PC as from what ive heard they games drop severe frames since launch and some are really poor quality ports like blury, and if someone wants to play any of these original games, they now have to play the broken overpriced remastered version, exactly like GTA.

They just took S1, S2 and SCD, which were already made, and recently comissioned Headcannon to do the same for S3&K. So basically, 90% of the reason that makes Origins even worth considering wasn't even thanks to SEGA or Sonic Team's efforts.

Honestly well said. Some other scummy stuff is that they keep marketing Amy in the game, despite the fact she only appears in CD and isn't playable at all. She appears in 2 CD cutscenes and three levels, and that's it. They also didn't add Knuckles into Sonic CD, even though that's really simple on RSDK and fans did it already on the Sonic CD decomp. Everything except Sonic 3's new remaster was done by SEGA in-house, and it shows, because it's plagued with problems, like graphical glitches, inaccurate porting of the drop dash, and poor level design for the new content. So the only reason to buy the game is for the Sonic 3 remaster which Headcannon did, except that's been botched now by the awfully arranged new music, despite SEGA being able to use the original prototype tracks, unedited if need be. I see people saying that mods will carry this game, but the game has Denuvo which severely restricts that and bloats file size. Given that the classic games are carried as a whole by fans and modders, the inclusion of Denuvo feels like an egregious spit in the face from SEGA.

When I was in primary school, I went to the shopping center with my family then I immadiately got into the room which sales tech stuff. I began to look up for the games for my pc (specifically old ones) and with a bizarre luck, I came across with *Sonic Mega Collection Plus* . Not only it was quite hard to find in my location (and Turkey I guess) it was looking pretty sick and had *A LOT* of games to play. I begged my mom to buy it and then when we returned to our home I immediately installed it on my pc then my true Sonic journey just began. What I want to say and point out here is the game I bought had +10 games *with* their Game Gear versions and there were hints, comics and also *unlockable* games which makes you want to complete every Sonic game. It was definitely worth the money we paid and funnily enough, the creator of the game said they made this to spread Sonic games to next generations (which definitely worked for me). *SO* they managed to make *SO MUCH* better *back then* but now all I can see is they're crying for money. You have no idea how much this event disappointed me.

Sonic Origins was rushed. It's missing the Sonic games for the Master System, Game Gear, 32X and the Saturn. And the new Super/Hyper tune sucks. Sonic Team, Christian Whitehead and Jun Senoue should have reused the prototype/PC version of the unused Super/Hyper tune for the Sonic 3 remake, but no, they screwed it up big time. Plus, the levels in Sonic 3 are not in the correct order. The correct level order in Sonic 3 is Angel Island, Hydrocity, Marble Garden, Carnival Night, Flying Battery (At night), Ice Cap, Launch Base, Mushroom Valley (Mushroom Hill's true name), Sandopolis, Lava Reef, Hidden Palace, Sky Sanctuary, Death Egg and Doomsday. Plus, Knuckles' theme tune is wrong and Lava Reef, Part 1's background music was not remixed to be used as background music for Lava Reef, Part 2. And one more thing: Super Sonic and Hyper Sonic's eyes are supposed to be black, not green.

I like the collection. I have played sonic since I was about 7 years old. I can see the difference in the animations and frames of animation. I feel like this is Sonic Jam 1.5, which is my favorite compilation, and I love the fact that my 100% completion is now in the cloud and will never be lost by a dead Saturn battery. I have my own complaints with it, but overall I feel like it’s worth 39.99 (which is the common price point for compilations these days). My main concern is the glitches (not game breaking) and losing Ice Cap Zone (but it’s been modded back in). It’s literally worth it to me to know all my hyper characters of S3/S&K will forever be available for a play through, because that’s a lot of work to get all the emeralds. I also appreciate the handicaps because I’ve done it without them.

6:49 Die hard fan of S3&K here and the remaster of that game specifically looks super disappointing. Blurry pixels, worse sound quality, some buggy collision detection and a slightly modified movement engine is enough to put any fan of that specific game slightly off. At least it's wide screen to console now? But there are so many roms which improve upon S3&K without compromising on those things for free, at least on PC. SEGA could have just purchased S3&K: A.I.R and sell it back to us and it would be an improvement. I understand some of this criticism is fair enough, but I have to say that calling Origins disgusting is a pretty strong reaction. I saw you're already aware of BlazeHedgehog's information of all the work put behind Origins so I'll spare the details with that and adress the points not directly related to that. The reason SEGA delisted the individual releases of the Classic games is not just because they wanted to sell their new product, but also because Origins by default makes them obsolete. The main reason for this is that those re-releases, along with the older collections as well, are all emulated versions of these games that even have their own set of issues that make them inferior to the original games. Origins on the other hand doesn't simply give these games widescreen support, as you may be aware now this collections brings to console for the first time the Taxman remasters of all of these games with all of their enhancements while giving Sonic 3 & Knuckles a proper full re-release after years of legal issues preventing this, while also remastering it in the process. Why would SEGA keep around inferior, cheaper (not only in price but in production cost as well) emulated versions of these games around when they have a product that's better in every single way? Even the argument of having options kinda falls flat when those other options are not really worth it except for Sonic CD, specially when before Sonic Origins was announced nobody even bought them anymore, giving SEGA less reason to keep supporting them in the first place. Not to mention, the mobile remasters and the Sega AGES versions of these games are still available and are much better options than the ones that got delisted. Not only that but the comparison with the X Legacy Collection also falls flat because Origins has an equivalent for almost everything it has to offer WITHOUT DLC to begin with, but X Challenge (which by itself had mixed impressions for how it was executed) and an easy mode can't make up for the fact that Capcom is simply selling you these games with emulation without any additional enhancements, hence the cheaper price. Even cutting the collection in two parts was heavily criticised on its release for being a possible greedy tactic on Capcom's part to sell you two separate products, specially when a previous compilation like the X Collection offered you the entire 6 X games along with Battle & Chase. In general, Sonic Origins actually kinda offers more content than what the average compilations offer to begin with, keep in mind Nintendo released a collection of 3 emulated Mario games for 60 dollars and most companies don't even bother doing new animations or significant enhancements for these kind of re-releases. Even the DLC is not that much of a big deal because it really doesn't offer you anything that forces you to buy it, the base game is already enough. Even asking for new playable characters is non-sensical, because something as simple as adding Amy as popularly requested would involve creating a new gameplay style, new sprites, program a new character from scratch, alter the levels so the new character doesn't feel out of place because they were designed for Sonic, Tails and Knuckles to begin with, and of course testing so the new character doesn't break. Most re-releases don't bother adding things like that so you can't really blame SEGA for this, even adding skins would feel half-hearted for most people anyway. They didn't even lie with fake promises in this regard, so it shouldn't be surprising either. Look, I'm not going to say SEGA didn't do questionable choices, 40 dollars is still a pretty high price for a compilation (and this is coming from someone who lives in a region full of economic issues), but calling Origins a quick cash-grab is short-sighted at best. 4 remastered games that were previously mobile exclusive with new content are already substancial enough to justify this product's existence and there's no harm on waiting until it's price drops eventually.

I thought something was wrong when, months ago, I went to go finally redeem my steam keys of the original games that I got from a bundle pack long ago, and they weren't there. I then thought this wasn't going to be so good when I say a YongYea video about this same issue a while back. I at least learned why the games were delisted, but it's a shady thing to do. Then this morning I saw a trailer for the game which comes out today, and a comment below saying that the music for Sonic 3 was different. Just so everyone remembers, the Xbox titles had been delisted for years prior to them being “removed” by sega for origins. Plus, those versions sucked balls. That version of 3 and knuckles had no save menu or title screen. You could not go back and replay levels once you beat the game. The only thing it had on origins was the original three tracks. So for me, it’s nice sega is replacing them with much better versions.

It's not a matter of them being better, it's an issue of game preservation. Those versions that "sucked balls" were the original releases, and gatekeeping them with a rerelease that not everyone will enjoy due to DRM, lack of interger scaling, a high price tag, and many more reasons is a generic move made by multi-billion dollar corporations who see you as a dollar sign. They should be able to co-exist, not competing with each other.

I am mad about sonic orgins. with the removal of Sonic 1,2 3,and cd, THEY REMOVED Sonic adventure 1, sonic colors ultimate, sonic adventure 2, sonic generations and sonic unleashed from the playstation store. i was saving up for sonic generations and this makes me mad.

It gets worse. They didn’t even include Sonic 3's entire original soundtrack. If anything, the fact that the fans are doing even better than what Sega is doing says a lot about Sega. I hope Sega receives massive backlash and reverts their mistakes, because this is just absolutely disgusting. Luckily, it seems their games are still on Apple Stores. I mean, sure, no S3&K, but you know what they say: A small price to pay for salvation.

as a sort of die hard classic sonic fan I honestly am having a lot of fun with the collection so far. I havent personally purchased any other collection of classic sonic games but having the option to play all 4 in their highest fidelity in the comfort of whichever system I choose is a game changer for me. i see all the extra stuff you can purchase as extra little side content and while its upsetting those features arent built into the base game I dont think it really takes away from the experience all too much. It's hard to make a great series of games bad when they arent actually doing all too much to edit the original games as is so for now I'm happy to just have a convenient place to play all these games in an upscaled resolution especially with widescreen as it makes all the difference for these games (and sonic 3 having it for the first time officially is awesome, even though they used poor remixes and the original soundtrack it is still one of my favorite games of all time and I'm happy to see it in this awesome resolution)

If this collection was 20-25 dollars and had the original music in Sonic 3, then it would be much better. Also, I wish they'd release Sonic Advance trilogy. And SEGA taking down other versions is shows they are a bit shady.

Yeah if they included the Sonic Advance Trilogy I'd at least begin to understand the $40-$45 price tag, but otherwise I agree it should've been $20-$25.

They should have added in the Master system sonics. It's an over priced collection with way too many missed opportunities.. I know this because I bought it and I'm kinda pissed off about it.

My question (as a die hard fan) is when will they release a 3-D classics collection such as SA1 or SA2 or Sonic Heroes, etc*. *etc referring to games such as Shadow The Hedgehog or Sonic Riders and more… EDIT: Also something i think worth charging £36 for is adding games such as Sonic Advance or Sonic Advance 2 or Sonic Rush.

As much as was to be left desired, I don't think insulting the game's added content and what it has brought to the table is fair, I think the whole concept of combining all 4 games into one big story mode is genius and all in 45 dollars which is the only legal way to get these games in their definitive state is not bad either. I don't think in any way it's scummy to create and produce new content that is adding on to the original classics and then charge a reasonable price for it especially considering all 4 games prior to it's delisting were $20 and a extra 25 bucks for the new content is not really anything to complain about it. Onto your other point, yes I agree the titles shouldn't be delisted but in a business perspective like you mentioned is just how it goes. But you're saying that people have to cough up 40 dollars when that's not true either as the mobile ports of these games exist.

I don’t think the game itself is hat bad, but the way it was presented in a cash grab like way, locking 80% of the content behind pre order and a digital deluxe version, is honestly terrible. I hope Sega stops making bad decisions and actually try’s to make people happy.

Is there a way to neuter the Denuvo thing with a Hex Editor for example? Is it an executable? I would bet the community will find ways to remove or disable that thing anyway. It hogs CPU resources like crazy and THRASHES hard disks with constant random access
