I don't know why I find your videos so fascinating. I've been watching them non-stop for the past two days (in loo of doing my work). Maybe I find it intriguing to see how developed nations (such as ours) solve the issue of feeding its troops on an individual menu item basis. Maybe it's how you're able to speak plainly and honestly, which is suitable for this subject matter, or maybe seeing these things remind of my dad's old war stories and his "unique" fondness towards C-rations. Either way; these are great videos, you have my compliments and take care of those girls who seem to really enjoy wheat snack bread (you have to be pretty special to like that stuff).

The MCW (formerly known as the RCW, or Ration, Cold Weather) is the protégé of the Long Rang Patrol ration, LRP, called "LuRPs" for short, which were introduced in the Vietnam War. These were so prized by the guys who got them that when they came home, one of the vets who'd started a camping store contacted Oregon Freeze Dry and bought all of their remaining stock to be sold for camping purposes. It sold out quickly! They regrouped and began to make the meals again, this time called "Mountain House", which is still in existence today. I too liked those chocolate covered cookies! I liked even more the old MRE brownies that looked like that. I have a buddy who was in Iraq during the 2003 invasion and he said they started sending them MCWs in place of some MREs, as the MCWs pack MORE calories than the regular MRE. It may not look like a lot of food, but like you said the entree's bigger. The idea is that, at least with the LuRP rat, that you pack more calories to keep the soldier going while reducing the amount of food and subsequently weight and space taken up in a rucksack, a soldier has to carry. This allows them to carry more mission essential items....and the freeze dried meals, in my opinion, taste better!

Mountain house is civilian version Oregon Freeze Dry still makes Entree fro MCW/LRP.....better ration imho.....

The sequence of presentation in the MRE vids is done very well, with good sound, good focus, and even close-ups so we can see the texture of the food. The POV perspective is perfect, just like we were opening the packaging personally. The tray/plate is a perfect prop for displaying the contents, and actually has become "part of the furniture" in these videos. All in all, very nice videos, lots of fun to watch. I think I'm not alone in saying "thanks"!

You should think about doing narration for movies or documentaries. The issue is this- Your voice has a mellow, mid-range character, that records well. And your honest-sounding stream-of-thought reaches the listener, and strikes a common chord.. I think all the above is partly why you have over 10k subs. I suspect they are not all MRE fans, per se. Your videos are like a little adventure with a good friend.

Having a few hexamine tablets along with a folding portable heater (like you find in some foreign MRE's like the German ones) IMO would be pretty helpful in these MCW's. That way it'd be easier to warm up the water in your canteen cup for this meal.

This meal would have been perfect for Strategic Air Command Camper Alert Teams, but alas, it was way after SAC shut down! I'm sure some variant of it is being used by Global Strike Command Alert Teams. These guys were sent out to "babysit" a nuclear missile when it started reporting gibberish to the launch capsule. The various Alert Teams guarded the missile 24/7 in weather that approached (-100 degrees below zero) until maintenance teams could be generated to fix the missile. Great review!

Ok, this is a dumb question but here goes...would the date code 4057 be 2004 or 2014?
@gschultz910 жыл бұрын
Not a dumb question at all. Because the government chose to go with a four-digit date code rather than a five-digit one that will always be a possible problem. You basically need to know a few things about the MRE to be sure: was the menu around in 2004? What is the bag design like? They didn't really intend for MREs to sit around for 10+ years without being used or rotated out, so I guess they didn't figure it would be a problem. Check out my video on date codes for more information on the subject.

@kuzmakrasko688410 жыл бұрын
Jaybird196 The Russian meal has lot of good stuff in it, usually some kind of stew, some canned meat and a fish item like Sprats, also with items you might find hard to get in a combat zone like cigarettes, candy and such.. Also has a small stove for heating, I think compare to USA meals, it's better stocked.
@Jaybird19610 жыл бұрын
Кузьма Краско 'Sounds like quite a nice meal. As a current smoker myself, I do like the idea of the cigarettes, cancer worries, mild temporary impairment of the shooting eye, and fear of being discovered via "smoker's cough", not withstanding ;) . I also like the stove idea. 'Very handy, should you need to re-heat your meal and keep it hot in the cold weather Russia, and places near it are known for. Personally, I think the French and British have the best meals, but I say so without having seen everyone's complete selection, so take this opinion with a grain of salt ;) .
@indyracingnut10 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised they didn't throw in a heater bag & drink bag in that. Might come in handy given the number of drinks they provide....at least they'd have something to mix the drinks in besides a coffee mug and a glass like you're using.

I wonder how the beef stew would have come out if there was only body temperature water to do the reconstituting?
@gschultz98 жыл бұрын
+4k8t I'm guessing (but don't know for sure) that it wouldn't be quite as good (if "good" is the right word to describe how it came out!). It probably wouldn't have reconstituted all the way, or taken a lot longer to do so.

What amazes me is the number of sweet items in each meal. I know one needs a lot of calories in a combat situation, and especially in cold weather, but I would think you'd get a "crash" after the sugar high after eating a meal with three desserts. Wouldn't swapping out one or two desserts with some foods with more fat and complex carbs but less sugar give soldiers longer-lasting energy?

I still don't understand the point of having a freeze dried meal and then adding hot water to it...I think it would be better if they just gave collapsible stove and food in cans like the French MRE! The food would taste fresh and satisfying!
@gschultz910 жыл бұрын
I agree that it seems kind of strange. Basically it's a trade-off of weight over convenience. A standard MRE would be a LOT easier to eat in the field (either hot or cold), but carrying enough for a long range patrol would be very heavy. By substituting freeze-dried entrees there is a lot of weight saved. I'm sure that getting the boiling water to reconstitute could be an issue in some situations, but once you do manage to reconstitute the entree it also makes a lot more food than a standard MRE entree (this one was 16 oz, where a regular MRE spaghetti with meat sauce entree is only 8 oz).

It's with the use of a flameless ration heater, the bag thingy. It heats up because of a chemical reaction somewhat like this: Mg + 2H2O → Mg(OH)2 + H2 [+ heat] No worry if you don't understand it, but that is something like chemical + Water = 100 F (56 C) in 12 minutes.
