Matthew Helmer, I can't respond directly to your question for some reason, but wanted to answer it. The reason for putting the FRH back into the box is to make it a little easier to handle (it does get very hot) and also to provide a little bit of insulation for the FRH to supposedly make the heating a bit more efficient and effective.
@davidjaquith11389 жыл бұрын
gschultz9 A tip on heating two packs at once, choose which pack you want to be the hottest, put that in the FRH pouch, as normal, put the other pack on the heater side, outside the FRH pouch, and put everything inside the cardboard.

David Jaquith David, I go one step beyond. I've stopped putting anything inside the FRH bag. That way, you don't get chemical crud on the pouches, the FRH works better, and both pouches heat more evenly. I also add insulation in the form of a cloth wrapped around the whole thing.

The reason it feels thinner or smoother, is because this one has less melt fracture in the blown film process which this is made. I work for a company that makes this exact menu and many more The Wornick Company, Sopakco, and Ameriqual and around the time this product was made we started trying to eliminate melt fracture from our process to make a smoother/more visually pleasing product. Just a little info incase you were wondering.

I know I'm late to comment here- but as a vet I will tell you a trick we liked for the heater, and a flavor booster for this particular menu. 1- the heater, you put your meal and side in the bag with element sandwiched, pour water in after, about 1/4 cup, then fold over and put in box. Don't close box yet! Take the jalapeño cheese and slide it in the box so it gets warm too! (But it won't get as hot) as for eating this makes the cheese easier to spread if you want it on ur crackers, but it also makes it soft enough that you can at it to your stew or rice, or mix all three together. I always liked it in the stew. Also, I'm sure someone has mentioned this, but those are in fact Combos, they are sent in Bulk to the MRE packaging plant where they package them so that they can be portioned. The sole purpose for doing it that way is cost. It's cheaper. The coffee is actually Folgers if I remember correctly.

Great review, as usual! You are always very informative and do a thorough review. I personally think that it's pretty nice that the MRE actually had a theme, and stuck with it through out the whole thing. No random grape jelly, apple butter, or whatever. Keep your reviews coming, I look forward to getting those new video notifications!

What I do is sandwich the heat element between entree and side pouches, slowly pour water between them soaking the heat element. Then turn it horizontally and gently shake until all theee water is absorbed, the use a simple binder clip or paper clip to close top to hold in more heat while allowin g the hydogen gas to excape. Hope this helps.

The Nacho Cheese bites are COMBOS from Mars Co. packaged by the MRE packager. I just wished they would also repackage the M&M in vacuum bags. I like to use the heater to soften up my cheese spread.
@gschultz98 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's funny that some commercial things get put into MRE pouches and others just go in in their regular commercial packaging (and suffer the ravages of time much worse than the stuff in the retort pouches.

I have always found cracks in the Peanut M&Ms, no matter where I get them. Just part of the process I think.
@The_Cranky_Painter9 жыл бұрын
It's interesting to note that Combos are made by Mars, which also makes the M&Ms, so it could be a supply contract of some kind. Personally, I would have crushed up the crackers and the combos, and mixed them both with the cheese spread, rice, and chicken, and red pepper into one big entree.
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
James Douglas That's a very common way of eating these things in the field. I've never really been one for mixing everything up (even when I was in the service), but it's perfectly valid. As long as you eat what's inside the government doesn't really care how you eat it. These things can get incredibly monotonous over time and whatever you can do to keep it interesting/edible (mixing stuff in creative ways, adding your own favorite brand of hot sauce...) is a good thing.

I just had one of these - I enjoyed it. My package was from Feb 2013 and had the exact same components as the one in your video. I put the entire sachet of pepper into the stew, that was quite spicy. I had to wash it down with a beer. It was a bit salty for my taste, too. The rice side dish was nice.One odd thing was that the package of salt was unmarked - I wouldn't have known it was salt if I hadn't had MREs before. I wonder if that's a common thing to have.

@mattdoesgameing58769 жыл бұрын
Where do you get that cool plate
@Kodiak40oz9 жыл бұрын
By the way G, the pretzels ARE actually made by Mars. The DoD has contracts with quite a few manufacturers to contribute different components to the MREs. The only difference is the packaging. Instead of the commercial packaging, it's delivered in bulk to gigantic plastic bags. Kind of the size of those super size garbage bags. Then the Wornick company packs them in the tan pouches for the MREs. It's basically just a repackaging/assembly facility that puts all of the individual components together to for the MREs that we all know and love (kind of). They do however make almost all entrees and sides on site but some of the components are shipped in from other companies that manufacture the different products. And believe it or not, even know the menus are the same, the entrees and sides actually taste a little different sometimes because Wornick actually has their own recipes that differ from the recipes of the other MRE manufacturers. I live in Cincinnati where the Wornick company is located and I know a few people that work there and I've spent a little time there myself so I know a little bit about this stuff haha. Maybe I could make some phone calls and arrange a tour and make a video so everybody can see what exactly goes into the making of the MREs!!
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
Andrew Tobias Thank you very much for all that information Andrew! I always had a feeling that the filled pretzels (and other familiar components) might be made by the companies that make the commercial versions, but had no way to really know for sure. It makes a lot of sense. And I think that a video tour of The Wornick Company would be absolutely fascinating! I know that I'd certainly watch it. Thanks again!

Great vid! Enjoy these. I used to not like coffee, but enjoyed the smell, but I found that i never put enough creamer or sugar. This makes it much more enjoyable - otherwise the coffee taste was too overbearing and bitter. Usually restaurants, etc. will make it way too strong also. Instant coffee has a different taste than brewed.

Are MRE's healthy or are they filled with like carbs?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+U.P. railfan They're not a particularly "healthy" thing to eat as everyday food because they are indeed filled with a high number of many nutrients (like carbs, sugars and sodium among others). But for what they were designed for (replacing depleted energy and nutrients in soldiers who have lost them in stressful field environments) they are indeed a very healthy thing to eat for a limited time. Hope that answers the question.

Would someone in the field appreciate if there were more "theming" elements in their meals, the mexican theme is nice, but I don't know if it's hardly necessary. Also, would you recommend adding a secondary FRH for meals with more than 1 pouch to heat up, or would making the single ration heater stronger be right choice, considering logistics and cost to produce.
@Kodiak40oz9 жыл бұрын
They really don't even have to add a second pouch for the sides, they just need a larger heater bag. I forget the brand but I've seen it in a few videos. It's an FRH but the bag is dark green and it's nearly twice the size of a regular one. That's the one they need to start putting in the MREs

Bill23799 Actually, there IS a tuna MRE. I've only had one (made a review video a couple years ago). Not only do they use the same type of packaging for the tuna as the stuff you find in a store, but it actually IS the same stuff you find in a store (with the commercial packaging)! I guess since it's already in a retort pouch the government didn't feel the need to package it themselves in a brown retort pouch.

+Fer DLC While deployed, but not while the bullets are flying. That's also why the meals are designed to be eaten hot or cold... sometimes you just don't have time to wait 15 minutes for the FRH to heat it. (Pilots in Iraq didn't even use the FRH. They just let it sit on the wing for a few minutes. The wings got so hot from the sunlight, that you'd get blisters if you touched them without gloves.)

quiggibub It's always MUCH more effective to put the pouches in hot/boiling water, but since I'm doing a review of the whole MRE I figure I should use/demonstrate everything in them that I can. Even though I'm in the comfort of my own home I want to prepare it as close to how it would be in the field as possible (other than using a tray, glasses and mugs!). I've done a review of an entree alone and put that one in boiling water. If I end up doing more of those reviews that's probably how I'll do them all.

Fun fact you use chewing gum to clean your mouth after your meals and sometimes helps concentrating

Ive had peanut M&Ms that were expired by a few months. A few of the peanuts were actually rotten and were brown/black and taste poisonous and toxic. There were no other breaks in the package other than the one i had to do to get access to the M&Ms. My guess that room temperature over the warm months had an influence on the peanuts. If they were just chocolate M&Ms, they would have been fine.

TKMantis That's an excellent point. The peanut ones would definitely be much more likely to go bad a lot quicker than the plain ones. I hadn't really thought about that when opening them up in older MREs. I'll have to be more careful when trying out expired peanut M&Ms in the future. That could be a nasty surprise!

If the FRH doesn't want to start up with normal tap water use salty water is that not the way to do it, maybe a Spetsnaz FRH would have worked better.

are MREs halal or not

+Anisul Hoque Standard MREs are not as far as I know, but I believe that the military does offer halal meals to troops that require them.
