Thanks for returning to make more of these MRE videos, I've always enjoyed how thorough you are with taking them a part but also with how you sample them in detail.

I got this same MRE when I ordered a single 24 hour ration from them. To be honest I was a little bit disappointed. Not in the quality of anything, everything is pretty standard issued MRE quality. But with the over all comprehensiveness of it. It just seemed to lack quite a few things that would have made it complete. Namely some sort of side to go with the entrees. The entrees are good but alone they are meh, the simple act of adding a some rice to go with it would improve it immensely. I actually took this camping and when I tried the Southwestern Beef My girlfriend had made some rice to go with what she had so I stole some and had it with it and it was perfect. Without the rice it just seems to leave you wanting more. Or even some Tortillas would work. Also on top of the lack of sides there is nothing at all for breakfast. No breakfast bar, no oatmeal, nothing. If they added a side or two and something for breakfast I would buy them again. Also mine had the older entree's as well.

It's actually closer to two full MREs than three. Only two entrees and a calorie count of 2500-2800. Two MREs total 2600 calories or so. For most uses, that's about enough for a day, so calling it a 24-Hour ration isn't that dishonest. I'll also vote with the folks who say the old entree dates would be a big negative for me. Thanks G-Man
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Rocky Raab I agree with pretty much everything you said there Rocky. When looking at everything included it appears to be slightly more than you'd get in most civvie MREs, but right around what you'd get in two genuine ones. I've already filmed the two review videos (still need to be edited), and I was a bit concerned that breaking it into only two meals instead of three would make for some VERY filling meals. But in the end it pretty much felt like I had eaten a full MRE after each. It still seems like a good product overall, but maybe not a full "24-Hour" ration. Thanks Rocky.
@kevinmoore29299 жыл бұрын
+ Rocky Rabb it would certainly make me think about ordering their entree` case for sure. but the way these are produced, I can kind of understand. I think if worse came to worse, I'd find someone who could guarantee "fresh" entrees, get some from them and just repack it along with something for breakfast, then vacuum seal it. I was happy to see the amount of drinks it had but disappointed to see it didn't have tortillas for the southwest beans and rice. sometimes I wonder if these companies really think about how these get packed.

They have made quite a few improvements since I reviewed the XMRE 24 Hour ration nearly 2 years ago. As for three meals, I never was issued 3 MREs for one day. We always got 2 and field stripped them to last the day since it was approximately 2,400 calories....well that along with whatever pogey bait we brought with us and the Maker's Mark miniatures I used to sneak out were a meal unto themselves and made the field experience so much more enjoyable!

Why would they be giving you almost 3yr old entrees? Are they getting surplus MRE's and just breaking them apart and creating 24hr kits?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Mark Ryals I'm starting to wonder about this myself. It's definitely becoming a pattern with XMRE products. I can understand them not having THE most up-to-date entrees, as they have to get them from the three companies that package genuine MREs for the government--and get to use the pick of what they have left over. but still, to buy a "fresh" MRE only to discover that your entree is two or three years ago is quite a letdown to say the least. Especially when you're paying top dollar to get those "fresh" MREs.

Those old ass entrees packaged into a new date coded product are a REAL turn off for me. If you were unaware and you left these for say two years in a stockpile, those entrees would be almost five years old at that point. Clearly this is a way to use their old stock and bundle it into a different product in the hopes of moving it.

I have been wanting to buy some of these, I think they would be great for day hikes or the like because they eliminate the need to boil water and all that to make some mountain house, but are lighter and more compact than military MREs.

I chuckle a little every time someone says you need 3 MREs a day but pretty much anyone who has been in the military will tell you that they rarely got 3 a day. If you're in a situation where you're living off MREs, you get sick of them quick so even if supply ever caught up with your unit (yeah right) you still probably wouldn't want to eat 3 a day you'd never drop a deuce if you did
@blisterbill84776 жыл бұрын
Andrew Tobias Yeah, But they were required to make sure we got them on a battalion operation or larger. I remember getting back from three or four weeks on an operation and being provided with the balance of mre’s we didn’t get in the field. It’s kinda funny when everyone in the company has to drag two or three spare cases of mre’s to the barracks and stash them under their bunks.

My concern is in a long-term survival situation going to need more than 2500 cal a day if you’re on the run.What are the suggestions for higher caloric intake double up on the ration or is there a ration out there that really provides what you need to stay mobile.
@gschultz96 жыл бұрын
You know, while I really hadn't thought about it, one thought that pops into my mind is supplementing this with something like Datrex emergency food bars. These things are already pretty heavy, so it would seem hard to imagine carrying MORE weight in addition to some of these rations. Datrex, or something similar, would allow you to get a large number of extra calories in addition to all the actual food you'd be getting with a commercial 24 hour ration like these. I can't imagine trying to survive (especially in a hostile situation) on Datrex bars, but using them to supplement a more hearty ration like this would seem kind of ideal!

+xZEHRBEHRx I can only guess, but my thought is that having matches in EVERY MRE (the genuine ones) must have seemed like overkill. do you know of any MRE that contains a low amount of calories?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+ben Thomas While MREs have never been a "health food" by any means, there have been attempts to make them a bit less unhealthy over the years. They have added a number of trans fat-free desserts and bread items and I believe that some commercial versions come with low-sodium entrees. Unfortunately I don't really think there will ever be low-calorie versions, simply because supplying lots of calories is really a core part of what MREs are designed to do. Perhaps one of the commercial companies will contract out to a producer of the foods to make a low-calorie version for them. But there would have to be a lot of interest in the idea to make it worth the extra money that it would cost to make the change.

gschultz9 thanks man i just wanted to know many people must of had the same question never would hurt to ask :)

+ben Thomas i don't think so the whole point of MRE's is to get the maximum amount of calories and salt (you need to replace salt lost due to heavy exertion and due to loss through sweating and fluid loss and if you have lower GI issues) that the average adult needs while out in the field or in combat.

That dating system is odd, how do you know its not 2005, 1995 or 1985 and so on?
@gschultz94 жыл бұрын
I refer to that as the "Decade Dilemma". It can definitely be confusing and the problem would be eliminated if the government would switch to a five-digit date code (15001 for January 1, 2015, 05001 for January 1, 2005...). The reason they stick with the four-digit code (to the best of my knowledge) is simply because MREs aren't designed or supposed to be around for more than five years or so. While they certainly can last a LOT longer than that, the government has no interest in giving 10 year old MREs to its troops, so it doesn't see the need to worry about that particular issue. It only becomes a problem for people acquiring MREs in the secondary market (which isn't SUPPOSED to exist in the first place according to the warning on MRE outer bags), where people might not ba familiar with certain warning signs that an MRE might be presented as being "fresh" but are actually 10 or more years old. There are clues that one can use to determine which decade the date refers to (outer bag design, menu number and entree).
@beowulfgrendel246 жыл бұрын
Obviously you have never been in the service. 1 MRE per day and if you are lucky you might get a hot meal also. MRE is roughly 3000 calories.
@gschultz96 жыл бұрын
I have been in the service. If you are subsiding on MREs you would be issued three MREs per day (approximately 1,300 calories each). There has definitely NEVER been an MRE that had 3,00 calories. The purpose of MREs is to feed soldiers when "real" food can not be supplied to them (in combat situations for instance). So, you're correct in saying that you wouldn't be issued more than one MRE per day--but that's only if there is a mess hall nearby, a field kitchen that could send food via truck or some sort of UGR for your platoon. But thank you for assuming.

OK, since when is four (4) Items a "case" of anything? A case (old school) is twelve (12) or more often Twenty-four (24).I'd say that four Items is closer to a "box" of something than a case. I'm not trying to be pedantic, it's just that playing fast and loose with words like this seems to be another way that retailers get away with the old "less is more" Idea so pervasive in America today. It goes along with the soda companies that try to sneak 11.5 ounces of soda into a 12 oz can, and many other instances of cutting some small corner to chisel the consumer out of more money while giving less for the same money..

MREs are definitely not a healthy diet alternative. High in calories, protein, but also sugar, salt and trans fats. Lacking in almost everything else. MREs are simply re-packaged mass produced commercially available food products that are cheap and easy to produce. In the end I think all the powers that be care about is that the Servicemen/women are being fed and not dying from starvation in deployed locations. If that means PFC Snuffy has to live off of cheez wiz, and skittles, so be it. Until a healthier option can be developed or until someone makes it a problem, no one important enough to make a difference cares.

omg you talk and talk, for more of the video, do you ever actually show what is in them, maybe in the last 2 minutes. I wanted to see the ration but into this at the 8 minute mark out of 13 and nothing but bs so far

Sorry you didn't realize this was an unboxing video and not a review. I thought mentioning that in the title would make it clear. I DO have a couple hundred videos where I DO review rations. Sorry you missed all of them.
