"I discovered that the two included entrees were nearly three years old" That is why your reviews are interesting & worthwhile: we get to see it as is, as purchased. That is, we get the truth. "I was assured that the entrees in the rations sold on their website would be much fresher than that." Which is the predictable spin any and all corporations including XMRE will regurgitate when their product's actual quality is poor, the word gets out, and the profits stop pouring in. That is, we get lies. Addressed to the people of XMRE: $25 for one of these and yet the food is 3 years old when sold. Mitch, please. Addressed to gschulz: Keep up the excellent work!

I like the fact XMRE is always evolving and creating options for their clients and consumers. I wonder if they would be interested in kind of a "throw down" of what we ration reviewers would put in a 24 hour ration and they could judge based off their commercial/sales experience.

+gundog4314 Being the "new kid on the block" XMRE really does seem to be trying to do their best to put out a good product. Like you said, they're constantly evolving and making changes. It's amazing to think that in less than two years I have already reviewed three different versions (generations?) of their "standard" MREs. The last ones I had were light years better than the originals (which I didn't think were bad).

These MRE videos are honestly some of the best quality content I've seen in a while, you are prepared and when you make mistakes you don't cut it out you show what you messed up on and what you meant to do. Also, even though you don't get as many views on these videos as I think you should be getting you still make them and don't let down your subscribers, must be why you would get about 500 likes and only like 4 dislikes.

i dont believe one bit of what xmre said... that would be the equivalent of having a restaurant reviewer come into a restaurant, and the chef giving them sub par or old dishes... xmre was packing up old entrees and got called out on it

+Schitte Industries That's too bad. I'm guessing they (kind of understandably) figured that an old date code (probably from before they started making MREs) indicated it wasn't one of their products. Too bad it didn't occur to them it was most likely because they had put an old item that pre-dated the company. Sorry to hear that.

+Schitte Industries Until this came up I had thought of XMRE as being pretty good with QC. I haven't tried all the companies' civilian MREs, but maybe the ones that actually make genuine MREs (Sopakco, Wornick and Ameriqual) might have the freshest components, as they actually make them and don't have to buy them to put in their MREs, like XMRE and Meal Kit Supply have to do. Just a guess. I'm hoping to try more of the civvie ones in the future and I'll have to keep this question in mind...

If you mix - match drink packets from your MRE's you can make a Warbucks / Fragachino by mixing a vanilla dairy shake packet, mocha packet, and two coffees in about a pint of hot water, give or take however strong you like it flavored.

they should include a couple pieces of hard candy for each meal, like a butterscotch or rootbeer barrel, a lemon drop or a peppermint or some kind of fruit flavored candy similar to the boiled sweets that come in the british rations . Have a random variety, it would be a nice touch and a very inexpensive bonus.

One of my persistent gripes are the drink powders. Many of those packed in official MREs simply don't mix well unless the water is lukewarm. With the huge selection of commercial drink powders available in single-serve pouches, the Army could just buy them instead of the awful ones now supplied.
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Rocky Raab Great point Rocky. I never realized that the powders work best with lukewarm water. That explains a lot. I prefer my cold drinks to be VERY cold, so I guess that could be a problem with some of these beverages! I suppose the thinking might be that most people in the field aren't going to have very cold water in their canteens (unless they're in a cold environment obviously). I was JUST thinking today that it might be nice if someone (a commercial MRE company?) substituted some Crystal Light powder (which I use a lot) for the standard stuff. It's lack of sugar would probably rule it out for the heavy nutritional standards of genuine MREs, but for commercial ones...?

@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Charlotte Leeser It does seem a little strange, but that's part of the design of MREs--anything that can't be eaten (or drunk) as is will need only water to prepare. That includes all the drinks (sports-type drinks, coffee, cider, mocha cappuccino...), dairyshakes, instant puddings and granola cereals. I guess, like you said, they have the powdered milk in some of them so you only have to worry about having water. Either that or it's...magic!

@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+CypherRCX That is correct Cypher.
@CypherRCX9 жыл бұрын
gschultz9 Okay, however even if it was just a "beta"package, marketing 101 would dictate that the anyone reviewing would be getting a fresh or in the case with long shelf foodstuff, it would be at least within the year to attract as many possible customers. "Saying" that paid packages will have "fresher" stuff just leaves a bad taste and considering you are no small channel they could have at least said "this is a sample package, contents may be older than actual product" or something like that. Now considering all these civilian MREs you had the opportunity to test and taste, and your own immense background with military MREs, would you ever go back to military MREs for any reason other than ease of consumption?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+CypherRCX All good points. I really do like the genuine MREs, if only for the reason that they're the "real" ones. They do tend to have more in them than any of the commercial ones. The biggest problem I have with genuine ones is that I've almost never been able to get any from the current year (due to the fact that they're not sold commercially and you have to go through other channels to get them). The big selling point of the commercial ones is the fact that you can buy direct from the company and (generally) feel confident that you're getting very fresh product, and that they've been stored appropriately. Not sure if that answers your question, but...

Given that you have tested the durability of the military style mres, how do you think the packaging of the xmre would compare? Would you have as much faith in its shelf stability as the aforementioned grade?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Travis Hancock Good question. The only real difference I've noticed in most of the commercial MREs is that the outer bag isn't as thick and tough. I don't really think that affects the shelf life much (though I could be wrong). The retort pouches (which are the exact same as the ones in genuine MREs) are where the long shelf life comes from.
@55Quirll4 жыл бұрын
If they continually do this the best thing to do would be to buy your own MREs and create you own 24 Rations. See how that would go. Buy a bag sealer with the size of plastic bags that will make a good 24 Ration and be sure to date stamp it. Just a thought.

Do they put date codes on all items? The jelly was separated, but did it have a recent date on it?
@gschultz99 жыл бұрын
+Seth Heller Pretty much all of the food items (and even the FRHs) will always have date codes. This one was quite fresh (though I don't recall the exact date code). The jelly does tend to be runny. While it was a nice change to get it in this one instead of peanut butter or cheese spread, I can imagine the jelly making for a sticky mess out in the field.

Is this basically equivalent to a first strike ration?
@gschultz96 жыл бұрын
I believe that's kind of the idea behind these, but they actually differ from FSRs in a couple important ways. First, while they give you plenty of nutrients for a 24 hour period (probably roughly equivalent to an FSR), they give you full-sized entrees. A First Strike Ration is designed to be eaten on the run with a lot of smaller components (mostly hand-held stuff like sandwiches) so you don't need to use a utensil for the most part. Because of the use of two full-sized entree pouches (8 oz) and other standard MRE components these rations would be quite a bit heavier than FSRs (I should have done a weight comparison).

Anyone in a emergency situation would separate the meal into 3 instead of 2, I feel this review should of been for that. Oh well, whats done is done.
@gschultz96 жыл бұрын
A 24 hour meal is designed to be eaten in a 24 hour period. You can eat it all however you want. It can be in two meals, three smaller meals, a series of small meals and snacks over the course of 24 hours... I did this video a couple years ago, but I thought I mentioned that. Especially in an emergency situation like you mentioned you might not have the luxury of being able to sit down for three evenly-sized meals. I completely understand the idea of breaking a 24 hour ration into three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and I generally have reviewed 24 hour rations that way. In this case I wanted to do something a little different for a couple reasons. Mainly I wanted to give viewers a chance to see ALL the components without having to sit through three videos (which is the way I'd previously reviewed most 24 hour rations). You can see all the food that you'd get when you open it up, which you'd eat whichever way you wanted or could depending on your personal situation and preferences. Sorry if that wasn't all clear. But please understand that I DO get the concept of a 24 hour ration. It's not a single meal, or even two or even three for that matter. It's 24 hours of nutritional replenishment for an active person in a stressful environment where "real" food can't be provided for whatever reason.

Well....no its not gonna be its for caloric intake this is for when you need to SURVIVE because if youre in a situation where this is the only thing you have to rely on for food you need to eat it and not care what it taste or look like. :/ I use these for hiking and they're perfectly tasty. Hell I could be eating a brownie shaped and smelling like dogshit but if its got 1500 calories and nutrients for me to survive im gonna eat the damn thing.
