The project for today is making the Biggest Giant Diode in the World with a Peak Ampere rating of upto 20,000 Amps and a maximum handling voltage of upto 400V.
This project has never been made on KZbin which thereby makes it one of the best diy project of 2020.
Its continuous current handling capability is upto 300A.
For making it, i have used 50 small 6A diode connected in parallel to reach upto 300A continuous rating.

Ok, I have 2 Questions about this: 1: How is the inductive flyback effect being handled from the motor? I do not see a huge spark when you break the contact. Only when you make it. 2: How are you getting the Diodes to share the load as equally as possible. Each of those diodes, due to the limitations in manufacturing, will have a slightly different forward voltage drop. This would cause the diode(s) with the lower voltage drops, to take on much more current than the ones with the higher ones, in turn may cause them to fail sooner from having too much current through them, while the diodes with the slightly higher voltage drops, are still turned off due to insufficent voltage to turn them fully on.
@melonmusk7502
@melonmusk7502 Жыл бұрын
The inductive kickback wasn't much at all. That big blue capacitor is responsible for the spark when he connect the terminals together. Regarding the diodes however, all of them are probably from the same batch. Even then, its pretty likely that the vast majority of the diodes are inactive and all the load is shared by 2 or 3 diodes with the exact same characteristics

He's using voltage Smoothing using the capacitor, it will even out all the diodes so they will mostly act as one. I say mostly as there are many more than Usualy tried and tested. Hence books all say don't do it. But who's got $1000.00 for a real one!

Все диоды имеют немного разные характеристики, поэтому каждому диоду нужен резистор 0.1-0.3 ом, иначе некоторые диоды пропускают ток в несколько раз больше чем другие, они сгорят первые, а затем на остальных ток увеличится.

You are great channel, but be careful with semiconductors in parallel. if they are not from same batch(trust me, they are not), they will have slightly different values, so trough the weakest diode, current will flow and burn it. after that it will switch to another weakest and cycle repeats. but i like your ideas! Young man, I do appreciate your knowledge of Electronics. You put out very well made video's. But the work you've done here in this video is very sloppy and really un-professional in my opinion. Some young person going to try this and get killed. This Diode you've just created could have been built better and you know it. This is very un-safe. Just saying. I'm not going to rate this video because of the Danger of the component. Not saying you didn't do a great job, because you did. The Diodes should have been welded. Not soldered. Shouldn't have used the Aluminum Can at all and you sure didn't need the Copper Wire. You should re-design this product for Safety and Durability. Just my opinion. Thanks for the upload.

So did I at first, many things could have been done so much better with this, should have soldered all the diodes together before making the groups for a start, should have if going down the track he did, worked his way out at the same time with the copper wire so it actually makes a good connection with every diode pair, when putting it in the can as he did he should have potted it in mineral oil so that less chance of thermal burn up of individual diodes as that would help spread the heat a little more evenly, however those diodes wouldn't be happy under a proper load anyway as the center ones would have little chance to actually dissipate heat, not only that im not sure how much that diode is actually doing considering its already going through a bridge rectifer before it even gets to the homemade,

it's weird that even after 2 weeks, the comment section still didn't warn you that wiring diode in parallel will not increase the amperage, in many American and European electronics channels, they keep doing that, but since you did test it with current higher than 6 amps, and it's still working, maybe now they doubt their statement ... but then, let's just see how many viewers will warn you in a year

And yes i hace seen power suplies with 2N3055 in paralell to increase or handle a reasonable current for each transistor....always look for the specification sheets of each device used . Avoid the maximum power curve suplied by the semiconductor manufacturer.
@alanpartridge2140
@alanpartridge2140 3 жыл бұрын
 @juan carlos quintana No Juan it is not possible. As diodes and semiconductors heat up their resistance decreases, this allows more current flow heating it up more, decreasing resistance etc..... The current rating of parallel diodes is equal to the lowest current rating of any of the diodes. The only time they might be in series is for safety critical circuitry but in which case both will be rated for the maximum current. Were the diodes in the power supply part of a rectification stage? Or were they feeding separate components

Your soldering iron tip is coated in oxide. You must use a wet sponge soaked in water to remove the oxide. Then you can coat the soldering tip with solder which is called conditioning. If you do not do this, you will waste a lot of solder and it will not get hot enough to flow the solder.

You did a good job connecting all the anodes in parallel, but the current collector you wrapped around the cathode leads doesn't seem to connect to the inner cathodes. With that, only the outside diodes are conducting current, the inner diodes are not. If you did connect the inner cathode leads in parallel, I didn't see how. Unless ALL 50 cathodes are connected together, your system won't actually handle the full 300 amps, or, withstand the full 20,000 amp surge.

@@alanpartridge2140 The junction voltage goes down, as a diode heats up, but the equivalent series resistance stays similar. The big problem is, poor thermal coupling. If these were power rectifiers, mounted on a thick heat sink, the thermal coupling would be good enough, to allow safe operation at ~90% of the theoretical rating of the sum of its parts. This, where the diodes can operate at wildly different temperatures, means this wouldn't be reliable much beyond 10% of the sum of its parts. Being tightly grouped like that, where the diodes are enclosed, and denied free air flow, they can't get rid of heat. Realistically, this might work well at 20 amps or less continuous current.

"electrons going back and forth" what you describe is AC All this diode is doing is blocking the DC current flow when it is put in the reverse polarity configuration @9:20 in the video. Also, the diose in the video is most certainly not capable of 20kA. the cathode wire will be gone much before that, but if that wont happen, yes the glue will melt, and if somehow diodes keep shape from the god awful joints, then the diodes will melt themselves.

Please make a short video on your all types of motors you can show in your videos and from where you got this powerful 12V motors ?
@Raaddller
@Raaddller 3 жыл бұрын
The 1st motor is a 24 -36V permanent magnet brushed DC motor. It needs a simple controller, it has good torque but is amp hungry. The second looked like an universal motor from some kind of a compressor. The third motor is an electric starter motor from a 100 to 150cc motorcycle. If you are considering making an electric vehicle, please consider a bldc motor. They are slightly more efficient compared to brushed motors.

Each of those diodes have a PIRV..or peak reverse voltage. .this is the voltage that each diode can withstand when it is reverse polarized....a higher voltage Will destroy each of them...the microwave ovens use a CR1200 diode that it has 1200 volts PIRV. With low amperage.....old CRT tubes use another high voltage diode after the flyback..that ones could be as high as 12000 volts...or higher depending on the screen size.
