If anyone thinks they might need this: 25 Language Devices: Defined & Explained! 1. Pathetic Fallacy Is when the weather or the atmosphere describes the mood. For example, when the weather is rainy people are sad and depressed 2nd example, the dark night could symbolise something supernatural like 3AM Satan etc… 2. Personification Is when a non-human is given human qualities. For example, the tree is waving to John as drives away. 3. Simile When you are comparing two things using ‘like’ or ‘as’ For example, his facial vision looked like a falcon’s eye 4. Metaphor Is when you are comparing two things with is or are Example He is an orc 5. Extended Metaphor Pick a metaphor and explain how --- > turn in to an extended metaphor Metaphor --- > Life is a rollercoaster. Now turning into extended metaphor add explanation so, Life is a rollercoaster you don’t know when you will be at the top or at the bottom, it will all happen in an instance, at the greatest heights you will be at the greatest heights and at times it will crash, but every day is never the same, just like in a turn in a Rolle coaster is never the same. 6. Oxymoron 2 opposite words side-by-side Example, the small giant 7. Juxtaposition You explain an oxymoron. The small giant tip-toing trying to reach the top shelf, however, his small arms and puny fingers prevented him from grabbing the bar of jam. 8. Symbolism Is when objects represent a meaning. For example, moon and the star represent Islam. 2nd Example, if you get a priest you will think someone died. In Macbeth the dagger links to death. 9. Semantic field Is where words are linked to an idea. For example, PPE, 2m and Hand Sanitiser, Head of Year link to COVID. 10. Irony Is when events in the text surprises the characters. Something not expected! Mr Birling offering a 1000. Scrooge changing his nature. 11. Rhetorical Question Question does not require an answer 12. Hyperbole Is when you hype, when over-exaggerating. I am going to eat the whole restaurant. 13. Assonance Is the repetition of the vowel sound. I am too cool for school. Oooooo 14. Alliteration Words in a row begin with the same letter. 15. Sibilance Is when words in a row have the s letter or the s sound Example: the snake was slowly hissing 16. Euphemism Is when you say something in an indirect manner. He is not with us anymore. 17. Emotive Language Is when the writer makes the reader feel emotional. By making them angry. 18. Onomatopoeia Words describe the sound Boom bang skirr pop 19. Ruel of 3 / Power of 3 / Triplets Words or phrases in a row describe something (3) The table is black, hard and wide 20. Facts/ Stats Uses evidence to support their facts. 50 % of the students prefer using email rather than social media . 21. Plosive Reptation of harsh sound Words such as 'P' 'D' 'B' 22. Zoomorphism Is when you give a person animal features. Example John barked at me / John shouted at me. 23. Opinion 24. Repetition Language Device and Structure. Noun, Verbs, Adjectives, Adverbs Structure Flashback - when you go back in time ,3 days ago etc.. Foreshadowing - when the writer gives clue about future ‘my heart was beating fast’ Zoom in - focus on one thing for example ‘pen’ , ‘specific character ‘ Zoom out - normally used to talk about setting Dialogue - when the character speak ‘hey there !’ New character New setting Change in tone Short sentence - to build up tense Long sentence - add details and slow down the narrative Short /long sentence - may show importance in both Shift in focus - talks about object then talks about another object for example ‘pen’ to ‘table’ Cyclical structure - similar stuff happening with beginning and ending Juxtaposition Extended metaphor Pace List Pov Overall tone Chronogical order Climax Repetition Links Mood , pathetic fallacy

In this particular poem love is presented as being very, extremely soothing, having the ability to generate peace. This is clear when we learn how love is the "only word that comforts me." Through the use of this hyperbole, it makes it clear that love can re-construct a persons emotions, bringing them tranquility and sereneness, this is a positive psychological reconstruction since you're being "comforted," this is juxtaposed with the perspective of love within the first stanza, which was evidently negative, but more notably through the passing of stanzas, it indicates the more time you give love, love will therefore requite good deeds back to you. In addition to this, when we zoom in on the adverb "Only" it is clear that love is unique and one of a kind, thus nothing can possibly displace it, subsequently, we should not take it for granted. As a result in the poem love and peacefulness go hand in hand.

In this particular poem, love is presented as the most valuable thing someone has to other; something that has far more meaning than any material gift. The speaker has "nothing else to give” the beloved, but the poem implies that this doesn’t matter; love is a gift in itself, a kind of “treasure” that provides people with a sense of warmth, protection, and safety in the face of hardship. The speaker implies that love can comfort and sustain people even when times are tough or the rest of “the world outside” stops caring. When we zoom into the word “nothing” it is clear that love plays a huge role in his and our life. It is almost like without love it is the difference between peace in world and warfare; two completely different experiences. As a result love and human values go hand in hand.

I made an attempt on the final point - I didn't want to take too much time writing as I prepared on paper where I can't alter once written too easily. let me know for any more improvements and what I did well - thanks In the final stanza, "love" in this particular section is considered to be affectionate. this is suggested when the writer states how "your letter in my coat will keep me warm." This implies symbolism of the letter to be representing love and when received can be maintained closely. looking at the adjective "warm", it presents the effect of the letter (love) to be comforting, reflecting back to stanza two. as a result, love is something to look after and keep close to your heart.

In Alpine letter the poet presents love as comforting and emphatic through "the only word that comforts me" this clear hyperbole suggests exxageration making a person feel cherished by love. Love is indicated aswell as juxtaposing the previous line of the "saw" refrencing to how love is every chaning, the writer may be suggesting to the reader what you find admirable about a person comforts you inside makes you feel whole, feel satisfied. As we zoom in through the use of "comfort" the verb highlights how love provides a peaceful aura and that it is the "only" thing to keep you at peace, the writer may be alluding love is more special and unique compared to any other feeling

In the third stanza, the material 'granite' is used to convey the forceful, rigid nature of the mountains between the lovers. This serves to emphasize the power of love, in relinquishing all boundaries and replacing them with close proximity and comfort, as 'a mile' seems relatively small in comparison to the 'Alps.' Moreover, the poet's use of eye-rhyme between 'harm' and 'warm' creates a connection between the two words, posing an unexpected twist to the violent, brutal atmosphere created in the first two lines. Perhaps the poet uses juxtaposition throughout the third stanza to reinforce the power of love, in replacing all physical barriers (the cold, the distance) with emotive feelings of 'warm(th)' and comfort.

Everyone else keeps putting practise paragraphs in the comments so I thought I would too. Btw amazing video it's really helping me prepare for my exam tomorrow! In the third stanza of the poem the writer suggests that love is all encompassing and almost overpowering in the way in impacts ones views of everything around them. The poet repeats the phrase "and in this ink" and goes on to further focus on the "voice" and "movement" portrayed within this ink. The use of anaphora effectively highlights how infatuated the speaker is and cements the view that love is overpowering. In addition the imagery of this "ink" is acting as a fluid symbol mirrors the speakers view about love, the speakers infatuation is allowing them to find meaning in every little thing and so is influencing how they view the world- love is bringing the world to life. As a result of this the poet influences the reader to view love as overpowering and life changing. However this strongly supportive view juxtaposes the poet's negative view in the opening stanza, further suggesting that love can be deceiving and volatile. Some may view this contrast as a warning yet perhaps it suggests that loves unpredictability and all encompassing nature makes experiencing it all the more fulfilling.

However it is clear there is multiple sides to love as love can also be comforting. This is highlighted in the way that it is "the only word that comforts" the speaker as if nothing else can comfort him only that word. The use of a juxtaposition between the first two paragraphs orchestrates an idea that love is more complicated than one feeling; it is constantly changing and one minute it could be violent and hurtful the next it could be comforting and nurturing. Furthermore the use of 'only' suggests to us that love is unique there is nothing else like love in the world; love is the only thing that can comfort the speaker; it is precious. Therefore undoubtedly the speaker is proving to us love isn't completely consistent it is forever changing. Love is ambiguous.

The writer here seems to create a distinct, rather layered impression of love. This is acutely done through the use of blank verses (unrhymed lines of iambic pentameter). These blank verses create a perfect synergy between the concept of structure, with a fixed syllable count, but also verisimilitude by abstaining from a rhyme scheme altogether. Perhaps the poem is constructed in this way to depict the homogenous characteristics regarding love; while love follows a somewhat uniform, structured pattern for all, inflicting universal emotions of adoration and inseparability, in some cases even shrouding individual idiosyncrasy of love, it also remains versimilar in the sense that these emotions are absolutely palpable and authentic.

The writer seems to depict his view on love to being irreversible. we see this through the description in the the poem when the writer exclaims that 'each letter looped about my heart' This hyperbole demonstrates the deep love the writer feels to the extent that every feature dominates his heart. The writer uses this sentence to express his feeling in such a magical way and to show how heavy he has fell for his love. The word looped further suggests that the letters are being wrapped around his heart until he is locked away in this irreversible feeling. The description of each letter being looped around his heart suggests that soon his heart will be bulletproof and no battle can change the depth of love he feels. Thus the writer uses this magical hyperbole within the declarative sentence to illustrate that his heart cannot be changed and goes even as far to question the reader on the irreversible love he feels.
