Golf MK7 Front View Camera, part 1: relay test

What if a relay will switch the video signal from the rear camera to the front one whenever you are not in reverse? Here's a quick test of a #frontView relay that I've connected to the #MIB2 Discover Media system. When powered with 12V, the relay will switch from the default video feed that comes from the original #VW rear view camera. Instead it will pass through an additional video signal from the front camera.
🚗 This project is made in 2015 Volkswagen Golf MK7 with MIB2 Discover Media infotainment system and retrofitted original RVC High camera. This is not a retrofit project, since this functionality was not available in for VW Golf MK7. Some other MQB vehicles had option of 360 AreaView feature with 4 cameras and 3D view. My project is a custom modification that I'm planning to make in my vehicle. I'm just sharing my progress and hope for your input.

I’ve already got this mod. It was a pain as all the plastic aliexpress cameras fail within a month or two. They mist up badly in cold damp weather. I must have gone through a dozen cameras. The final solution was to take a part the camera you have now and use the front frame mounted on the grill so it looks neat. But behind that is a metal bodied camera from another supplier glue gunned onto the grill from behind. This setup I’ve had for over a year and it hasn’t failed. I only have the front camera controlled via a switch as if you enable auto switching you lose visibility of the oem park pilot display which I didn’t want to lose.

Hi there, Another cool video 😎 A quick question, how do you enable the camera to show when you press the parking assist button? I retrofitted a camera in my MK7 Hatchback but pressing the button only brings up the radar view but no video feed. Possibly something in VCDS or OBD 11? Thanks again, Mac

Its just a relay switching between Video front and video back The video signal is just one wire with ground No need to switch grounds so very easy Should also work with a mosfet Edit: he explains it in his video tho

Sure. Just check FEC/SWaP codes in hidden red menu first to confirm what's the latest supported map by your unit.

Should have just upgraded your original unit to an android unit, with canbus box...my mk6 unit have front and rear camera, change from reverse and it switches to front camera automatically for 8 seconds

It's a basic relay that you can get in any electrical shop. Just add a diode to prevent damaging it, add RCA connectors, couple wire extensions and that's it.
