I'm so glad more people are finding out about this truly amazing game! A few notes I do have is that first, you had your fire extinguishers wrongly positioned on your ship. They require door access to work and you had them facing in a way (The slot where their doors had to go to was up against an airlock) that didn't allow them to have one. Also, your approach of methodically killing all the weapons and thrusters most of time, whilst a pretty handy thing you can do, isn't really the most efficient way to deal with the enemies, you're much better off destroying their cockpits and rendering them incapable of flying. And lastly, you could've just used the credits you had in stock (And you had quite a lot) to upgrade your reactor to a medium one right away. When you're next to stations you can use money to buy modules (That money is spent into buying resources which the base's crew also help add onto your ship) instead. You already had all the components for a reactor except uranium, and there was nothing stopping you from buying a couple just to speed things up a lot. Cool thing about larger-sized reactors is not only are they more cost-power efficient, they also produce larger scale batteries - 2-sized ones for mediums and 3-sized ones for larges, *but,* they also have a larger charge up time, with small reactors taking 0 seconds to charge up a battery, mediums - half a second and for larges it's a full second.

Very true, early game just go for the reactor or cockpit. Taking out the weapons is more of a later game thing (depending the ship), in order to salvage more materials from the wreckage. Some ships have their weapons hidden behind too much armor for the endeavor of saving reactor and other materials to be worth it. And when upgrading ships, always use blueprint mode. That way no construction is done until all changes are approved. Nice way to make sure all changes are of a useful nature. Mangled a lot of my ships by missing doors, or otherwise lacking access to vital sections, and prematurely sending it out to combat 😊

I love Cosmoteer. It's flexible enough that you can play very casually, or extremely hardcore. The dev team is fantastic and the community is very welcoming. I never say this, but turn the music on--It's a fantastic dynamic system that they've layered together. Yes, I'm shilling for free. I like it that much.

I'm surprised Francis didn't steal a single ship in the entire episode. =) And if anyone has the impression that this is a simple sandbox, then this is not, here you can spend hours in the editor. The ships alone in the grid at an angle (45 degrees) are worth it. And also, to speed up progress, steal a ship and convert it into a truck, the loot here does not disappear until you leave the sector (just put marks where the remains are located). So you fight with one ship, collect junk with another =)
@RK-qg8ko Жыл бұрын
But why return to already studied sectors?! I thought they did some kind of respawn in the sectors, otherwise you could empty everything and then have nothing to do.

Oh boy! Back when I had last played this game years ago, which was in one of its earliest versions I believe, I ended up designing cost-effective cruiser-sized ships in the $500,000-$1,000,000 range that could kill more expensive capital-size battleships worth at least $1,500,000, that were basically slow-moving long walls full of front-facing small cannons, which could fire projectiles that could burrow small distances through ship parts, making them some of the most effective glass cannon ship designs at that time, since back then, whoever destroyed the other ship's weapons would've most likely been the winner of the engagement. No amount of armor or shielding could've withstood such immense firepower.

This is a VERY cool game, they have come along well since the early days when it was very basic, but it was showing the possibilities of what it could become. I'd note to you Francis that your Fire Extinguishers were not being used because you had them rotated the wrong way, the doorways were pointing into the walls. I would suggest that you should limit the number of doorways so that fires don't spread too quickly, they spread via doors. Hope you really enjoy this one, it's a lot of fun 🙂

You can run multiple ships/stations at the same time. I usually make a cargo/mining ship as my second ship and escort it with my first while i mine and sell ore for cash until i get enough money to make a factory ship/station that is basically just some factories with a buttload of cargo space that i can park somewhere safe to refine all the raw resources into useable materials that can either be sold or be used to build more ships. The bottleneck then is getting enough crew to man your fleet, you can pretty easily unlock all components in just your first system with a few hours mining.

While you can sell resources to a station, you can also just drop resource in a pile next to a station (or anywhere) and they will stay unmolested for you to use when upgrading / building new ships (don't remember if they stay after leaving system); saves allot on cost. Tactical becomes even more viable when you build a seconds + ship.

The biggest upgrade from a better reactor is how much power your people carry at a go. Small reactors generate 1-power batteries, med 2s, large 3s. Crew can only carry 1 battery at a time. Oh, and crew roles/assignments are critical. Watch your Muppets during a fight, and you'll see just how dumb they are.

OK been playing it since morning. Something I realized is how valuable it is to have weaponry on sides. Weapons, at least lasers can be aimed for about 180 degrees which allows them to shoot forward. Having them on sides just means you get better angles for hitting the right targets. I've been blasting cockpits left and right because of this
@cf453 Жыл бұрын
Good insight. It also better protects your weapons. Later game you'll probably want a second ship to flank with and hit the vulnerable spots.
@beheroot Жыл бұрын
...and then you NEED to start manage pathways. With massive ship with 10 of biggesst storage compartments (and thrusters, guns and shields scaled accordingly) you need to start thinking where you put your crew quaters and how. As in: where doors are. Crew is slower when they passes by a room. You technicaly dont need corridors... but you will regret not having them :P oh, and you can specialize crew members to do certain jobs. or not do. Just like ONI priorities.

I bought this game 1/2 a year ago and had a lot of fun with it. A friend bought it with me and we played for about a month. He kept comparing it to Avorion and just wishing Cosmoteer had more to it, like a goal more than kill everything then move to the next system. I got 89 hours into Cosmoteer before he bought me Avorion just so I would try it and ended up playing that for 375 hours in my first play through on a server with said friend plus a little bit of solo play. I can see why he kept comparing them and do agree Cosmoteer needs work, but Avorion is also way older and fully launched. Cosmoteer is very similar but has it own features that I like like messing with crew and their quarters based on their job. And while I have skipped over other games with this top down view of ships I do really like it in Cosmoteer. I would like to see some of Avorion's features in Cosmoteer but I don't want Cosmoteer to just become a 2d Avorion. Can't wait to see what all ha been added into Cosmoteer when I get back around to playing it again. I know build-able jump beacon were added like a week after we quit, which was something we both wanted.

The main part of this game that separates it from Avorion, X-Series and the like; this is a logistics game with a spacer-wrapping. Crew: a ship can be run with just a third of the recommended ammount, if you wanna play with the logistics puzzle. This is also one of the ways you can have a massive fleet in the end-game. Fame is the limiter, and at one point, that gets maxed, which sets a maximum number for how many crew one can have, spread about the fleet (or, if you want, one huge capital-ship with mining lasers, built-factories, and station-killing guns, all run with a skeleton crew in comparison to what the game recommends)
it's quite fun, but the learning curve eventually skyrockets, there's a dedicated pvp community too, gets crazy once you unlock all the tech and min-max the shit out of your weapon systems, my favorite is the ion beam, you eventually start to get more than one ship going and have a storage ship, main ship, scout/distraction ship. and most importantly, a test ship for your next new and improved weapon of mass destruction

22:49 If i remember correctly there's a setting for your weapons to only shoot when they have direct line of sight, which is good for weaker weapons but kinda pointless for railguns that fire through several blocks.

If you go into manage resources tab it will give you a complete list along the bottom with values of what your currently holding, if you click on the resource you can then highlight a square in your storage and allocate it to exclusively to steel for example, so if you want to ensure space for more valuable drops in amongst the debris you will have it. I personally find the resource stacks quite small for things like steel so a mod I'd recommend is Nightawks Night Rod Special Optimal Storage.

You can make a custom blueprint for your starting ship, up to a certian value- including any blueprints required. For a different experience, I made a starting ship with no guns and "wasted" most of the money on a steel smelter, so I have to go mining to get the money to actually buy weapon technology, while evading the roving pirates I cant defend against.

I sunk disgusting amounts of time in to this game and various mods for it. It's good, but the campaign still needs work to be satisfying in the end. Hopefully campaign 2.0 improves that! Later the rail gun becomes an almost obvious choice for AI. You can outrange almost anything and surgically take down many ships. It's refreshing to see it through fresh eyes. You made some mistakes I also made early on. The crew management is surprisingly tricky because you hardly focus on them while you are in combat, and that's when you'd notice where they are having trouble.
