Rick Wakeman was one of several performers paying Tribute to the Life of Keith Emerson. This was a one time performance at Symphony Hall In Birmingham, England, July 28, 2017. I apologize for the periodic shakiness of the video, I have an 18-300mm zoom lens that was nearly at maximum zoom where even slight moves appear as big ones with no tripod. I also had to keep the camera low as the people behind me kept reminding me what a PITA I was being!

Sadly, the legends of rock ,we grew up listening to, are now at an age where we are losing too many of them. And, the new crop cannot compare.🙏🏻

The new crop, especially rap musicians, can't light a candle to the musical talent the people like Wakeman and Emerson have/had. I've introduced my son to these classics, ELP, Yes, Genesis, Tull..... and he wishes this was the music that was being composed and played today.

Sadly true, but access to music is so much easier than it used to be. So, even though I have about a thousand albums from back in the da, there are thousands more that I wanted and even more that I was unaware of. Now with streaming services and easy downloads, I can listen to entire discographies of bands or musicians I am aware of or easily find similar music by different musicians, I carry around 70gig of purchased music on my phone and have even more cataloged in my streaming services. As for live shows, they are much harder to find but they are out there!

@@leonardoD81 There's plenty of incredible music being made today, including rap and all that good stuff. Death Grips is one of the freshest groups I have ever heard. Also, MF DOOM was incredible. I could go on, but I got school, so take away this one lesson: Every generation and genre has incredible music, and every generation also has peepee poopoo music. The 70s had a shitload of garbage and disposable music made during the decade, but we all remember the incredible music that stood the test of time. You should go outside of your comfort zone and listen to modern music. You do not have to like it, but please don't say that an entire genre doesn't have talent because that's silly.

I had the good fortune to a) be born in 1956 b) have musical parents that taught me to appreciate ALL great music in all genres, and c) to have lived in a major city (Vancouver, BC) to see top concerts. My first concert was at 8, which was the Beatles. I saw Yes 4 or 5 times, and ELP 3 times, so to be able to sit and watch these musical giants perform their masterpieces was an honour that my poor kids never got to experience. I can't express enough what a great vehicle KZbin is for sharing these musical moments with the current and future generations. There's nothing like a live performance, but where would we be without these gems of video? Thanks for posting. Keep on rocking, world!

Fantastic tribute for one of my favourite keyboard players by another. When I was 17, in about 1971 or 2 I was on holiday in the NE of England and practicing Aram Khachaturian's "Toccata" on the hotel piano in advance of a concert. Finishing there was clapping from the back of the hall, from a young man with long hair. He came to the piano and asked me to show him some of the fast bits again. Then he had a go and sight read the damned thing. For an hour, I showed him what I had learned about it. Then he played me a Toccata which he had written. I asked where I could buy the music. Not Published, but you can listen to it here and he wrote ELP on a card. When I got back to school I told my friends who said, "You idiot, Alker - you have just given a rock legend a piano lesson! That was Keith Emerson" A friend produced the cover of Trilogy and sure enough-there was my friend from the hotel. What a player.

I saw Emerson, Lake and Palmer Live in 1977 at Cornell’s Barton Hall. We were just young college students then and although we already knew about their incredible music we didn’t seem to quite know what to expect. It was surreal. The first half blew us away. We were shell shocked. During the intermission the announcer told us the 2nd half would be even better and astonishingly, he was right. Keith was bending notes into oblivion on the moog, Carl was buzz-sawing his synthesized percussion and Greg’s voice just cut right through you. You never forget something like that. Thank you for the many happy memories you have given to all your fans. You are a sweet, gentle soul, God Bless ♥️

Very Very Grateful I was able to get to see ELP Once in person back in the late Eighties or early Nineties when they played there concert in Tinley Park, Illinois and I’ve seen Yes 8 times in my concert history. To be Able to experience and Listen and Watch ALL the Prog- Rock Experience Grow and Flourish from the Start of it ALL by The Moody Blues Band and All the Other Prog-Rock Groups that Followed in Their Different Styles of All The Other Prog-Rock Music from the Late 1960’s into The 1980’s and Will Never See This Kind of Music Again !!!! So I Really Cherish The Music and Memories That Came Out Of The Prog-Rock Genre ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

Old Pete Top chap! Well done you. I sometimes feel a little old, at 53 but, in the last couple of years, I've taken my Mum to see Thunder & Steve Harley. In return, she's taken me along to see Rick Wakeman & Paul Carrack. Don't misunderstand me, I've got 2 teen daughters & go to the 'heavier' gigs with the lads but, even at 78yrs of age, my Mum still likes a whiskey & a boogie, lol!

55. I tried to bring this wonderful Musik to my son. He is 12. He don't like it but he knows some of the great bands like yes zappa pink floyd etc. I tried to explain him the difference between our live from now to the seventies. Germany was very conservative in the old days so we protested against with music. This year I was in Bochum in a Steve Hackett concert. Guys I feel 18 again. Thanks for a lot for great times in my life.

Pete, you had some damn great musicians for like 20 - 25 years! Greg Lake had a most beautiful voice and was an outstanding singer, George Martyn the drunkard, such a gifted composer, singer and guitarerro, Mr. McCartney and John Entwistle such fierce beasts on the bass, John Bonham one of the most powerful drummers ever, 10cc a witty pop group with clever, world class compositions, XTC who could have seamlessly continued where the Beatles left off . . . my god I can't stop. One day Andy Partridge will be honoured as one of the most creative composers and Pete Townshend, too, I am very sure. Outstanding people.

Old Pete::: So many concerts and so many laughs and tears but we all are part of the circle. We've seen the pinnacle of Progressive rock at it's finest with the great musicians as our captains taking us into happiness just for an hour or so.. We all go forward we have no choice. Life is a moment in time and i remember it all. Saw ELP in 74 and was blown away by all three. RIP Keith with beautiful fluttering fingers and Greg with the voice of a thousand kings. We will never see such talent again.

With tears in my eyes, I too am overjoyed that you caught this on camera. What an amazing moment. I studied piano and then pipe organ through the 1960s. I discovered The Nice, then Yes, and ELP. All through the 1970s, I and my musician friends were obsessed with ELP. And I mean OBSESSED. We played everything. We deciphered ELP tunes note by note. I grew up in West Los Angeles and never missed an ELP, Yes, or Jethro Tull concert, nor did my circle of friends. My best friend, also a pianist, and I used our connections and money to get front row seats. No cost or effort was too much to make this happen, if we could possibly do it. So yeah, I was a fan, to say the least, and still am. Wakeman and Emerson were good friends, so I'm not surprised that Wakeman would do this. Trilogy is a particularly gorgeous piece of music created by Emerson, and Wakeman has the skill to work with it. Listening to this, I am instantly transported to the moment I first heard it, after buying the album on the day it appeared at Tower Records in Hollywood. I was was one of those waiting in line for it. Take A Pebble is another that I used to play endlessly on the piano. I probably drove my neighbors crazy, and I don't care. But I suspect they actually loved it. I never got a single complaint, ever, in all the years of banging on the piano. Tarkus was, of course, another. My neighbors learned to appreciate 5/4 or 10/8 time signatures. Haha. As is always the case with music, it will probably be a hundred years before these geniuses are fully recognized. But they will be. You can depend on it.

Thanks to all for all of the wonderful comments thus far! This was a combination of songs pieced together by Rick. Although most of it was based on Trilogy written by Keith. Rick also added parts of Nutrocker... an adaptation of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite (March of the Wooden Soldiers) as arranged by B-Bumble and The Stingers back in 1962. I think Rick's performance was stellar as well as heartfelt. It is NOT Keith's version of Trilogy, It was Mr. Wakeman's gift to a friend.

I’m sure we’ve all seen interviews with rock stars that when recalling their rise to stardom many say how lucky they were, maybe being in the right place at the right time. The same cannot be said of Rick Wakeman. He was going to be a star regardless of what time or era it was. He’s that fucking good. I can’t think of another piano player in pop, rock, program or whatever you want to call it that is anywhere near him in talent.

Thanks to the Internet, we have the ability to pull things back from the brink. Emerson and Wakeman (and the whole rest of progressive rock) succeeded in spite of the record companies, and not because of them. Now that the Internet is chipping away at the record companies' control, we can get the music we want instead of the music that the record companies tell us we're supposed to want.

Thx so much for uploading! Beautiful work. I had the luck to see Mr. Wakeman during the Yes-Tour "Tales from topographic oceans" in the Festhalle Frankfurt Germany (1974?). The security opened the gates too early by mistake for a few seconds only so a few dozen fans had to chance to slip into the empty Halle 1 when Rick entered the stage to do some "warm-up" and spoke a few words of welcome. It was an almost private club atmosphere. Unforgettable to have a genious like him so close and see him checking the stage arrangements.
