What a fantastic video!!! As a lifelong TR fan it almost brings a tear to my eye when someone actually takes the time to learn these controls and doesn’t just give up and call them trash. Once you learn these controls, the game and challenge is fun. I’m so happy you were able to get the hang of it and really appreciate them! Now it’s time for you to give RE a try! Those are incredible games as well! 🥰

Great video, proper nice to see a newcomers perspective 😊 Regarding Lara (not Laura) supposedly being a boss chick, she's hard edged and confident WITHOUT being obnoxious and miserable. A lot of strong female characters these days are that but often also have a chip on their shoulder and a nasty attitude

18:36 "she probably put down half the earths population of animals" 😂. Great video lad. Loved your take on it. Well done for learning the tank controls, makes the games better to play. Modern controls don't teach new comers how to actually play the game, which also would turn them off from playing it and appreciating a classic. Games are supposed to be challenging, makes you want to get good.

Thank you!!!!!! This is such a great video. There are so many modern gamers who say these games are unplayable because of the controls… no. You need patience and you need to understand how to play them. Older platformers kind of prove how streamlined games have become. Games used to have challenges in all aspects and I’d love for that to come back. It kind of is with remasters of old games which I love.

The walk to the front edge, then hop back to do running long jumps is one of the things she teaches you in the manor training level. She goes through all three styles of forward jumps (short standing jump, running jump, running jump with ledge grab). But glad you were able to figure it out. Great video, glad you enjoyed this classic.

Yup and then you can skill up from there, like taking running jumps from a few steps walking first so you don't need a full square etc. Brilliant how the more patient and precice you are, you'll always succeed, so only stressful moments break it and you gotta keep your head cool.

I was really impressed how you learned to understand and love the tank controls!! Most gamers today and even back in the 90s just don't understand the controls! 9:22 i think it would be a better demonstration of tank jumping if you just did regular forward>right>back>left>forward jumps without any rotations to reach the top of that room. 12:50 you're not supposed to time jumps correctly. After hopping backwards and getting perfect 1 square distance between Lara and edge, you just hold forward and almost immediately press and hold the jump button. Lara automatically jumps from the edge. It is actually what Lara says in tutorial level. However, the video is great!

Tomb Raider was first released on the SEGA Saturn (not a lot of people know that) before PlayStation, I remember seeing a friend play on Tomb Raider on PS1 and remember later on PS2 (which I had). Interesting that the re-mastered versions have been released around the same time at Tomb Raider 1 to 3 has been released on the Evercade console (the PS1 versions). Love that you gave the tank controls a chance. Modern controls are fun, but tank just feels right to me. I've played these games for as long as I remember, and put over 650 hours into these remasters alone. Before they came out, since I'm a PlayStation main, I played a lot of Uncharted to kinda fit that hole. While Uncharted are also great games, coming back to them after TR Remastered is extreme jarring. I've actually grown to detest the autograb mechanics as they're so finicky, and they really frustrate me. I'll die on the hill where I feel classic TR controls are damn near perfection. They're mostly consistent and just really give you a feeling of satisfaction knowing it was YOU that got Lara on top of that really tall structure, not an automated system. Having full manual control of the main character is something games today really lack.

I wanted to get in here while my thoughts on the controls are still in my head, but as someone who grew up with the original games, I actually prefer the modern controls. Tank controls are something I actually think work better in Resident Evil than Tomb Raider. Lara's movements are either very quick or very slow, and there's no real in-between, while Resident Evil tends to feel just right for me. For me, the modern controls had their own learning curve, but I stuck with them, and I much prefer how tightly I can platform with the modern controls. It's also a nice bonus that the modern controls no longer require you to hold action the whole time. Saving my thumbs. X3 But honestly, I think keeping the d-pad as tank no matter the active control scheme would've been the best thing to do. Being able to hop back by pulling out your guns is... nice, I guess? But actually being able to just tap back on the d-pad to do a hop back would be much better.

9:21 When you pull your guns out, her jumps in the Modern Controls turn back into the Tank Control jumps. Even as a Tomb Raider fan from long ago since my childhood, I'm gonna be honest here. The Tank Controls work, they were made for the game, it was designed as a Tank Control game. HOWEVER, after playing the TR Remasters with the Modern Controls only, I definitely think they are much easier, faster, convenient and fun to play with. I would only play with Modern Controls from now on.

Another thing I think you didn't mention (I watched it all) is that, just like in DOOM, your resources are kept from one level to the next and if you aren't careful you could be kinda screwed in the later levels when the difficulty ramps up and medkits get rarer. I really like this side of the game - a bit like a rogue-like. I don't remember if it was in TR1 or TR2 but I felt I had to restart the entire game back in the 90s because I ran dangerously low on medkits. I wasn't mad one sec because the games are so fun, I just thought I'd have to be more careful this time. In TR2 especially since it's full of gun-users that deal a lot of damage to you, you really need to have a good strategy when fighting them (either get farther away after you start to shoot them since you have infinite range while they don't, either get behind cover between two quick salves, or on the contrary when they're close, run towards them to get behind their backs asap since they have tank controls too and it's easy to stay behind them while unloading your clips on their backs haha) and to use your medkits wisely (big medkits give you full-life so only use them when you're REALLY low on HP - I've seen so many streamers underestimate the games, gulp big medkits at half-life and ending up not being able to finish the game lol). It sounds rough having to restart an entire game, but it feels right to me since a good game should also be challenging. Great video btw, though I feel you spoiled the story a bit much haha. IMO, TR1 & 2 are both masterpieces but it may take a replay + some time to get to this conclusion about TR2 (ending kinda sucks and I bet some confusing level designs WILL wear you down in your 1st playthrough - Maria Doria says hi).

a thing with laras long jump is that it´s kind of automated. meaning that it always require one square to do nothing more nothing less. and that you don´t have to time the button press at all, as long as you follow the one square rule. believe it is the same if you run a longer distance pressing jump within that last square makes her jump the optimal. i could remember it wrong but i don´t think i do. so to do the long jump 1 square distance, run press jump immediatly. and she still jumps at the edge.
@Grimpachi
@Grimpachi 19 күн бұрын
@basseman4239 they could have changed it in this version but she has to take enough steps or she won't jump. The tutorial tells you if you hop back then run forward that gives you just enough build up to long jump. Funny I'm actually playing 2 now and yeah if you run and immediately jump she won't.
@basseman4239
@basseman4239 19 күн бұрын
@@Grimpachi yeah, it is one square.. if you have one square. you run and press she will jump. it is very mechanic. and based on the square. what i mean is that she won´t jump when you press, just at the end of that square if done correctly mainly on points where you are supposed to jump off. it all depends on the grid the whole game is based on. but to be fair i am not sure, the other mode besides tank actually follow these rule.

I don’t know. Lara moves great in Modern Controls. Every action in Classic mode is present but only with the guns. Every jump can and will look good if you hold guns. Press square take a step back. And just run. All the mechanics are still present. However emphasis is placed on where the camera is. Not where Lara stands. It’s a matter or perspective. Literally and figuratively. I was able to beat all of TR1 and part of TR2 with modern ONLY controls because I can play rank but I wanted to see if it can be beaten only with modern and it can. (Now I prefer them).

@romeostruedude that's fine. I still think having to hold your guns to flip is not an intuitive solution. If I remember correctly, you have to hold down the button right ? I would argue the modern controls are the best and how modern games should done. ✅ I was an OG fan and obviously loved tank controls but I didn’t realize I wanted modern until I started using them now I can go back. I just like that their is auto option like auto grab for example but you CONTROL when it happens. You can even change the layout to have almost identical layout to tank controls but still have that modern feel She can move like butter once you have a full understanding of how combat and the level design works! Also the example you used with the flips with tank vs modern like you said you can do the flips with modern just gotta rework your mindset to take out your guns when you flip Modern is better too with those particular flips because tank you have to STOP to start the flips while modern since she moves like butter you just take out your guns and boom she’s side flipping and backflipping

For a video over 40 minutes long, you've kept my attention from beginning to end! Great job! I agree with everything you've pointed out in this video. I love that you notice things about the gameplay that only the biggest fans would take note of or speak of. I've been playing the classics for over 25 years, so a lot of what you said made me nod and also took me back to some of my common mistakes when I began playing. LOL. I also really appreciated your lengthy speech about why Lara is iconic and still relevant. Even covering people's misconceptions of her. As a feminist myself, a real one because I believe in equal rights, not this stupid men vs women arguments common today, I would never been a fan of Lara if I felt that Lara's only value was to be an object for men to drool over. If Lara undressed herself as a tease to a male character or the players, I would've lost respect for her. Thankfully, her sex appeal never mattered in the games. The games focused on her intelligence, tenacity, and skill sets. That in itself is a positive message to women that women could be both attractive but not measured out by their sex appeal. That's why when Crystal gave her a common body type in the Survivor games, I felt it took away the good message that a supermodel-type woman like Lara could be taken seriously by her skills. As for Lara being black, I don't know if you know this, but Lara was originally supposed to be a South American woman named Laura Cruz. But later they wanted to give Lara a more British background, so they changed her name from Laura Cruz to Lara Croft. I think they either didn't want or had no time, to make Lara look more like a British character. That's why she has darker skin, a big booty, and full lips. They never changed her Latina look.

@throughthelookingglass5973 thanks for watching. I thought 40 minutes might have been too long, but I'm glad I kept you entertained.
