PICARD: But you have just said there are only two challengers arriving. What is the point? K'MPEC: I want you to discover which one of them has killed me. Gowron or Duras. Yes, Duras. I thought you would find that interesting. PICARD: Interesting? You could say that, since he tried to have me killed, and conspired to strip Worf of his good name. K'MPEC: And I approved. Remember that Gowron was an outsider, a far shot at getting a chance to take control of the Empire, but the timing would have been just right, as it was only between him and Duras. If K'mpec lived another 10 years of a normal life then Gowron may have vanished by other Houses making an impression. The time was right for Gowron to eliminate K'mpec and challenge Duras. Looking back to this scene, it's clear the writers already had ideas about the corruption and decay in the Klingon Empire that was greatly expanded upon in DS9, even this early. They were spring boarding off the earlier plotline where the Klingon council knowingly "discarded" honor for political expedience, and discommendated Worf to protect Duras and by extension, prevent civil war. Now don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem with political expediency in the real world. But these Klingons purport to live by different values, and are willing to die for them. Or are they? Perhaps in reality they're willing to die...but only for their own personal glory and legacy. That's quite different. I think this conundrum is hinted at here by K'mpec when he jokes about his epitaph. He's frustrated by politics requiring him to discommendate an honorable man and his family. He views this request he's making of Picard as a last resort, to prevent the Empire from disaster, yet again from the brink. In his dying days, it seems to him like the Empire is also similarly on it's last legs, and he's trying to preserve it for just one more generation, or even a few years. He does not speak like a man anticipating the Empire's long future existence and the glory that comes with it. He clearly didn't trust Duras...but he also didn't trust Gowron or the other Klingon House leaders much more. He quite literally didn't trust anybody to not be in the pocket of either Duras or Gowron. Back in TNG we saw Gowron as an energetic, ambitious man, who upheld the concept of honor, at least compared to Duras. But in hindsight, he too was a creature of politics even then, the best choice among a rotting stock of plotters and opportunists.

Being that Capt Picard took an initiative to assist Worf in Worf's challenge to restore and resolve his father's name and his family's house, K'mpec knew that Picard, despite his reluctance at first, would agree to maintain relations with the Klingon Empire, and the Federation by eliminating the culprit of so much treachery. That being Duras and his family.

I don't think I understood until recently the sheer ramifications of this decision. If Duras had won - and Gowron didn't have the support by himself to win, so it would have been likely - the Federation and Klingons would have torn each other apart and formed a neat little doormat for the Dominion to step on. I tend to view TNG and DS9 as one long story arc, and this is one of my favorite moments just because of how pivotal it was for the fate of the galaxy. Picard no doubt felt the weight of a mountain on his shoulders, but had he known of the Dominion threat, it would be the weight of a planet.
@seanwhitman83533 жыл бұрын
I don't think the Dominion was a thing at this point in TNG/DS9. It was more they were thinking about who would exploit the situation in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Powers like the Romulans and the Tholians would have jumped at the chance to snap up territory if these two main powers weakened themselves enough.
@Tintin8243 жыл бұрын
@@seanwhitman8353 Oh for sure the Dominion wasn't a thing at this point in the writers' room. I do think it makes for a really interesting point though that this situation, if the Dominion HAD been in the works, was one of the hinges around which the independence of the entire quadrant depended. Hindsight, I suppose, makes this particular wine age even finer.
@seanwhitman83533 жыл бұрын
@@Tintin824 True. Hindsight in this case does make for a deliciously aged bloodwine. Duras would have made a very poor Chancellor and the entire quadrant would have been conquered. No buts about it. For all of his scheming, Gowron was the better option, and he proved to be until he was killed by Worf and replaced by Martok. I doubt Duras would have lasted as long.
@Tintin8243 жыл бұрын
@@seanwhitman8353 I feel like Gowron was kind of just warming the seat for Martok. For all his strengths, the man was still corrupt and debatably even cowardly. But yeah, he did at least allow one of the most stabilizing parts of the quadrant to survive. I'm not sure how much I agree that Duras wouldn't have lasted as long, but then again schemers rarely last long, and ambitious puppets even less.

In the end, I believe it was Gowlron who killed K'mpec. Duras would have just up and killed the dude. It was Gowlron the rank outsider to win who did. He did end the Khittomor Accords and declare war on the UFP. Fine, he resigned up again later, but in the end, he kept sending Martok on suicide runs due to his fear of Martok's growing political power. Regardless of whether he wanted to use it. In the end, he directs the Klingon part of the Dominion War just to make certain staff officers including Martok look bad. Dishonourable conduct in war. In the end, Worf killed him as he killed Duras.
@SantomPh5 жыл бұрын
Gowron is the one who would outright kill K'mpec, he is not the poisoning type. Power got to his head later, but until the Dominion War at least he was a very popular and capable Chancellor. His disdain for Martok was rooted in old feudal attitudes the Klingons had trouble shaking off, rather than an inability on his professional part.
@Andrew-eq1jw4 жыл бұрын
Nah if it was Gowlron who was the poisoner he would of started poisoning Martok when he started seeing him as a threat, but he didn't which shows that's not his style
@3Rayfire4 жыл бұрын
I don't think Duras had the guts to see the old man in battle. Even when he's fighting Worf he's actually trying to negotiate and plead off his rapidly impending death. Duras was a coward. Gowron got big headed and became a glory hound during the Dominion War, but when Worf challenged him, he threw the Chancellor's cloak off drew blades and went to work. Gowron could be an ego-maniac, but he was a true Klingon and died as such. He wouldn't have poisoned K'mpec. Duras by contrast had the mos power and stroke in the Empire, and the largest power bloc loyal to his house. If the old man dies, he's the de facto pick to become the new Chancellor, which is what he was counting on.
