From what I have been told here in the US..Boston Cream Pie is technically a CAKE, but regardless...it's delicious. I like to freeze mine a bit before cutting and serving...eating it rather cold makes the Custard a tiny bit crunchy with the minute Ice Crystals that form in it!!😋

I think your end product looks AMAZING, Mrs. H! The switch from corn syrup to maple syrup will affect the thickness of the mirror glaze, it's a tiny bit firmer with corn syrup. But considering the switch you had to make, it came out so well. One would never know you had to switch, and switching things in baking is not easy! Great job! I'm still pushing for you three to try Gooey Butter Cake, which is a St. Louis thing. In fact... I'm gonna go get my mom's recipe and email it over to you. :D

I am still waiting for the day when Elana says "Quit your gibber jabberin' daddy... let's get on with the video!!" She loves to talk, and she is so smart.... I really enjoyed Thursday's video when she announced her daddy was home and went running toward the door... SO CUTE, It made my day!!! It brought back memories when I picked up my son at day care after working all day, he was always excited to see me, and I was excited to see him too... I miss those days, now he's 34 years old, they grow up too fast, enjoy Elana while she is this young, she will be a teenager before you know it ... but remember, it's a good thing you have a cat.... There's a saying that says "Dogs prepare you for babies and toddlers... " Cats prepare you for those teenage years... lol!! Good video today Mrs. H.... I'm so glad you've gotten hooked into America's Test Kitchen! I've been a viewer and a member for forty years. The good folks at Cook's Illustrated/America's Test Kitchen have made me the excellent cook I am today at 62 years old. I always look for recipes there first, and if I find what I'm looking for, I feel no need to look anywhere else. As they say, they make it 300 times so you don't have to.

@NotKev2017 what? You're saying maple and vanilla/maple and chocolate don't blend well? Genuinely asking have you just never had maple syrup or something? If you don't like it that's one thing but those are famous pairings lmfao Chocolate, vanilla, and maple all do work together quite well (especially when you consider maple syrup literally contains vanillin, the chief flavor compound of vanilla) at least to most people. Have you ever had Chocolate chip pancakes with syrup? That's vanilla, chocolate, and maple Hot chocolate with pancakes on a cold winters morning on the slopes?

Start with making bread. Just know going in you are going to have some failures. And everyone has been there. There is no shame in that. Also I say start with bread because if it fails you are only out very minimal cost of ingredients, Some flour, salt and yeast. As opposed to chocolate, fruits, nuts, butter, and expensive spices.

I am aware it is quite a good bit away from now, but i think it would be so cool if you guys celebrated Thanksgiving this year. It's a food holiday, inviting over family, setting up a whole extra table to fit all the people you love, and spending all morning in the kitchen making everything from scratch. It is personally my favorite holiday! Turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, super soft carrots, cranberry sauce, stuffing, gravy, pumpkin pie, sweet potato casserole, dinner rolls, apple pie, roasted brussels sprouts, mac and cheese, baked corn, tell everyone to bring wine and pick up some sparkling apple juice for the kiddos to drink. Go around the table and express what you're truly thankful for in this life, toast and cheers for new memories, and take an hour-long break between dinner and dessert so everyone can have a chance to nap. It's a celebration worth trying out if you're able to give it 100% effort. I am positive if you asked us for recipes you would get a whole lot to choose from, make sure you do some research on proper cooking tools for making the dishes, I have a book of every kitchen tool/utensil and what it's use is, VERY GOOD PURCHASE!

Boston Cream Pie is one of my all time favorites! Corn syrup is typically a substitute for sugar. . . I’d imagine that the substitution for maple syrup would not be 1:1. Also, the taste of maple syrup is definitely recognizable (not in a bad way, but distinctively “maple” - and not what a Boston Cream Pie classically tastes like). That being said, I’m sure it was delicious! Who does not love maple? I can’t wait to try it!

I love Boston Cream Pie! It's always been a favorite of mine. The doughnut is a bit greasy, which the pie is not. Rather than use maple syrup, use treacle. Amazon does sell corn syrup - use the light corn syrup. Have you made tea breads? They are cakes, fairly dense cakes, baked in a loaf pan. They tend to be less sweet than traditional cakes, they don't normally get frosted, and you slice them in generous slices. They're utterly delicious with a cup of tea! I like lemon poppy seed, zucchini bread, banana walnut or pecan bread, carrot walnut bread, blueberry bread, or cranberry pecan bread. You can use this as dessert OR slice a piece, toast it, and spread a bit of butter on it for breakfast. Yummy! Definitely try the tea breads!!!

When i make Boston Cream Cakes sometimes i make a quick version of the cream that requires no stove top. It uses 2 cups heavy cream whipped to stiff peaks with ⅓ cup sugar, 1 tsp spoon of vanilla and 1 box of Instant vanilla pudding. If it is too stiff add 1 tablespoon of milk at a time until you reach desired consistency.

That's a really good thing to do, taste, taste, taste through out the whole process, that way it's a sort of quality control and you can make sure all the flavors are on point through out the cook. Like a beef stew that you cook for a long time, the flavors will change from the beginning to the finished product. It's also a really good way to build up your pallet so you know what specific things are supposed to taste like. Also the Boston Cream donuts are basically like the eclairs you guys had in texas, except round, they are so good.

I do believe that you can use what you guys call Golden Syrup as a substitute for the corn syrup. I LOVE watching you guys making and enjoying our favorite foods!

Forgetting to add a bit of vanilla to the cake just lets the cream and chocolate flavors shine more. It does help boost the flavor in the cream though so since you enjoyed it you should definitely not forget it next time, lol. I, personally would have added only about half the amount of syrup to the chocolate though. It would have made it just slightly less runny and stayed a bit better on top. That said, you did a fantastic job, especially for a first attempt. Well done! 👏🏼😁 BTW, Elana is just getting more and more adorable by the day. Such a wonderful little lady you're raising there! 🥰

I love Boston Cream Pie but rarely have it. Looked so good. I thought the maple syrup would change the flavor but i guess not. Best to you. I love how baby H loves it too!

Hello from Oklahoma!!! I really enjoy watching your videos, as food (baking moreso than cooking) is one of my passion. Alana is just way to adorable and I love how you encourage her and include her at such a young age. I can tell she will be a well-rounded force to be reckoned with when she's an adult.

Sorry I missed the premiere but through the miracle of youtube, I was able to see this wonderful video1 Elana's verbal ability has increased by leaps and bounds and she is so well behaved! Mrs. H is getting progressively more professional both from a cooking as well as presentation perspective! The Boston cream pie looks scrumptious!

Hello from California. I clicked on this because I haven't tasted Boston Cream Pie in many years. The recipe looks so complicated; now I know why I never see it, except in the frozen food section. Maple syrup in chocolate? That's different! I always plan how to make it easier. In this case I'd add butter to vanilla pudding instead of "from scratch", with cream cheese if it needs thickening. Btw, it looks like British semi-sweet chocolate is much lighter than ours.

So far, you are making it perfect. Boston Cream Pie takes a little time to make, but so worth it.

substituting with maple syrup is actually a good idea! corn syrup is just adding sugary sweetness but no flavor. adding the maple syrup gives it a slight maple flavor, and maybe not quite so much sweetness. i was a bit worried that you would find it to sweet. we tend to over do the sweet here.

I grew up around Boston. The reason early on the cake for this recipe was made in a pie tin, was that very few American households had cake pans in the late 1800s, but everyone had a pie tin.

Whoa! You've done it again! You just made one of my favorite dishes, the hot brown, and now you've gone and made one of my all time favorite desserts. I love Boston Creme Pies and the donuts that are similar are so good. My late wife, rest her soul, would sometimes make one of these for my birthday. I'm not surprised you liked this one, it is awesome.

Ah, less than 20 seconds in, and Elana is innocently channeling the humor of Gracie Allen, who had partnered with George Burns (her husband) for decades, starting with Vaudeville, then radio, movies, and television for more than 40 years. The classic bit was when George would say "Say goodnight, Gracie.", and Gracie would respond with "Goodnight, Gracie"
