The Jerry Cantrell Wino is the best Les Paul Custom Epiphone

DISCLAIMER: This is not a sponsored video. The guitar belongs to a friend of mine who wanted me to review it. It is a honest review and represents my personal opinion about this guitar.
The Epiphone Jerry Cantrell "Wino" Les Paul Custom Dark Red Wine 🍷 is simply one of the best Epi Customs to date! I think only the new Adam Jones can replace it in my heart.
I prefer the combination of Alnico Classic PRO & 98T PRO in the Wino better than the ProBuckers in the regular Custom. The Wino sounds closer to my Gibson Customs.
The C-shaped neck profile on the Wino is closer to the profile of my Gibson LP Custom guitars than the flatter D shaped neck profile on the regular Custom Epi guitars.
The Wino is curently the only way to buy the LP Custom in the beautiful Wine Red Color... and what a way to do it, with such a cool guitar including a case.
And Don't worry if you are not a fan of Jerry Cantrell and Alice in Chains - just swap out the trusrod bell and you got a nameless Custom. Only the JJ logo on the back of the headstock remains.
This thing is so good that it sold instantly, the day after I got it for our shop. I managed to do a full video review, and gonna post it soon.

Very Sweet, Thanks for the video. I love my Wino Les Paul Custom, one of the best guitar purchases I have made in the past couple of years. I will probably get an Adam Jones as well, since the SD Distortion Pickup and neck profile with the volute puts it really close to Norlin-Era specs and another winner for an Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Hopefully I can get one without the Artwork for a lower price when they are released.

Great review. I still have my original 1968 LP Custom but these last few years Epiphone has popped up on my radar so checked a few out. I bought their 1959 collaboration with Gibson pick-ups, wiring etc. Very nice - quite a different feel from what I'm used to but worth checking out. I also spent some time comparing the 2020 Ebony Custom with the Wino and opted for the Wino - it's a lovely instrument altho I may put some Monty's Bethnal Greens or Underspun PAFs in it at some point. Epiphone are coming out with some amazing instruments these days - it's a buyer's market for quality right now! Still thinking about the Custom - maybe Xmas 😀

What an absolutely excellent review. Very thorough and methodical - and Gibson can't get screws right either! Your review helped me decide on buying this guitar and I'm so glad I did. The ebony fretboard clinched it for me. Would have passed on it with any other FB material. The Epiphone pickups are very impressive and will be staying in.

I gig with my Epi Wino and people always say how damn good it sounds, they can't believe it's an Epi lol.

Is the distance between the humbuckers the same as on the Gibson? Or is it like other epiphone Les pauls with the bridge humbucker further from the brigde than Gibson?

I measured the Custom Ebony and Alpine White Epis. The Wino seems the same as them, not as the Gibson.

My JJ Wino is the best epi I’ve ever put in my hands. The factory setup was ok but once I raised the tail to lessen the break angle she hums. I almost play it more than my Fender Strat HSS Deluxe!

Which is best the wino or the prophecy , or custom which one you like best . It’s hard to choose I grew up playing my buddies Epiphone Les Paul standard I always thought it was a Gibson cause it sounded amazing lol it had thetwo chrome humbuckers and the sound was incredible but I like the combination on the wino , but curious comparing the wino to the prophecy , well and the custom which is best in your opinion ?

Watch the Gibson vs Epiphone LP Custom video 👀 The Regular custom epi has a flatter and thinner neck profile. The Wino has the rounded off C like the Gibson.

Looking forward for the review of the white one, although it doesn't appeal to me because of the pickups and the 24 frets, but it's awesome that the Wino actually has a C shape neck rather than D, despite Epiphone claims it has a 60s slim taper neck. Binding colour also fits better on the Wino than the standard white custom which is cream white binding on a snow white guitar (kinda the same deal on the white JJ).. The Wino only being $120 more than a regular Epi Custom, makes it a really good deal with those pickups, neck and case!

Yeah that neck and pickups are important. Even if Epiphone releases the Adam Jones without the art on the back for a reasonable price it is not a guarantee that its going to be better than the vino. Remember we are talking about the best Custom - meaning they nailed the looks, sound, feel, neck and playability of the Gibson at an affordable price. I don't think Epiphone will come out with a Silverburst that will combine all that. If they do, I'm buying one 🤣

Have you tired the Epiphone 1960 Tribute Plus? I have one in Black Cherry amazing guitar and probably rivals this. It comes with Switchcraft toggle, Locktone Bride/stopbar, Gibson wiring and Gibson Classic /57 pickups(57Plus in bridge).It plays like a dream has a beautiful finish and once I filed the nut a bit holds tuning very well. Good luck finding one though!

Hands down it’s a beautiful guitar! How about those PUPS? They sound amazing! Looks like EPI hit it out of the ball park with this guitar that’s made overseas. Despite not being made in America, EPI is manufacturing a really great guitar. It’s loaded with a ton of features one is looking for in their next guitar, and I gotta say it’s on my list to purchase one. I know who Jerry Cantrell is but admittedly I’m not a big follower of his. However, I do love his signature guitar and I will be added one to my collection in the near future. Thanks for your review.

I was looking and comparing this guitar to the Gibson Tribute. I found that the neck of the tribute was not really what I expected, plus the finish seemed pretty bad (at least the one I tried). for a bit less I can get the epi jerry cantrell, add plek to it and have a great guitar. I always worried on Epiphones the fret work. but doing a plek work on it, you have an amazing guitar.

I ordered here in the US through sweetwater, that they have the service of set up and/or plek. so did order adding the plek (that comes with set up as well).

Finally got mine in... but man she needed a tune up. Sharp fret edges and a bad setup. So I sent her in for a setup since Long & McQuade offer a free setup. She sounds really good. But I do have a question for you George, as I mentioned in another message, I might change the bridge pick up, since these "plug & play" connectors, is there other connections I can buy somewhere?

Don't worry yours will be perfect after they are done with the fretwork and setup. Just have your tech cut the quick connect plug and connect the cables for the new pickup.

It turned up today and it stunning. Need to change the strings but think ill leave everything as it is for a while. Maybe change the nut but its not urgently required. I have a Harley Benton Les Paul shape and put the Slash AFD pick ups in so I wanted the JC to sound a bit different - which it does.@@GeorgeVGuitars

My understanding is they will eventually release a plain AJ version after all the art is released. I’m interested to see how much they drop the high price tag for one with no art and no Gibson pu in the neck. Considering this JJ one is basically the same with a case for $450 cheaper than the AJ art versions, I’d say it’s gonna need to be on par price wise. I also think people are gonna start losing interest if they keep dragging the releases out. Just my opinion

Although the Wino is a great guitar, I think my new Epiphone Adam Jones Les Paul Custom beats it. Just by a little, and I still like the Wino. I actually like the Wino more than my Epiphone '59.

I like silverburst more too, but the artwork and the price tag prevent the Adam Jones from being the ultimate. As soon as Epiphone unveils a clean silverburst near the price of the Wino, the JC reign as the ultimate is over.

Hard to believe the cheesy Adam Jones model is more than twice the price. Cantrell is way cooler anyway

I didnt know the jerry Cantrell model was $650 when it came out! Can you tell me where I can get one for $650? The adams jones custom is more expensive yes but it was $1299 when it came out. You got a limited high quality chainsaw case. With tsa locks..Not just a screen print of the artists name on a cheap case.You got a actual Duncan distortion pickup. Ebony board. Orange drop caps 500k pots.You got a unique vintage silverburst finish on the font sides and neck! Art on the back of the headstock! You got a valute on the nack to the 70s spec and tuners to the same spec and also got a massive Frazetta image on the back! Yes the Adam jones model cost more but you definitely get what you pay for and if you look at what you get I would say this is a bargain at 1299. I’m also positive that the Cantrell model will not hold value like the jones model just to have a actual legit silverburst finish is almost worth it alone. Oh yea they also only made 800 of them.

The Wino is constantly out of stock and people come to me wanting to order one almost every month since it came out. Not a single person contacted me about the Adam Jones. The Wino will hold its value. The AJ will too.

Ah ok I got it, you are talking about the F serial number ones. Definetely not a part of the current Epiphone lineup and honestly I would go for an Edwards in that case.

@@GeorgeVGuitars There's no "huge art" on the last 800 they're releasing. As far as price to quality ratio, the case, SD pickup and numerous custom specs they have over any other Epiphone I've ever seen, more than makes up for it. Antique silverburst on all sides with binding galore. If less is better, then I guess a red custom with generic pickups is cool. My regular Epi LP custom silverburst modded with EMGs and Gotoh magnum keystone locking tuners was great. But it's back to factory specs and up for sale with the ADCB '59 LP. I'll gladly give them both up for a Frazetta "The Berserker" model I have pre-ordered.

Well, first, “the best” is an opinion. So the title of your video should be the best “for you.” What is best for you might not be best for me. If I tell you which is best for me, it may not be best for someone else, so who cares. Second, instead of paying an extra $2-300 to have Jerry’s name on the guitar, I’d pay that amount NOT to have his name on it. I don’t like grunge and would like to point out grunge artists’ pro-drug stance killed off almost every leader of that depressed movement. If you like grunge, you’re probably mentally ill. When is the last time Jerry’s band headline a stadium tour? Back in the mid 90s? I could not care less about his band and his grunge sound. Third, you clearly missed out on 80s hard rock. There is something to be said about having a good time and not pretending to be sad and depressed all the time, like grunge musicians.

As far as price/quality/playability/value for money are concerned it doesn't get any better than the JJ Custom. Second: As I mentioned the price is insanely good, you are almost not paying for Jerry's name. You are getting killer pickups, rare colour and a hardshell case for next to nothing over the base Custom price. Third: Wanna bet if I missed out?
