Sure is. Apollo loves only himself. He might feel attraction, fascination and infatuation. But it is brief and capricious. His adoring smile can change to disdain and displeasure in a eyelid blink if you do or say something he doesnt like. You must ever walk lightly and with extreme caution in his presence, always acquiescing to his opinions and utterances and desires. Bow to his every whim, otherwise he is ready to hurl his lighting at you. When you no longer captivate his attention and interest he is done with you, whether you are goddess or mortal or anything in between.

A lesson in Trek judging other species by human morality? It simply hadn't really occurred that he may be wrong. He didn't ignore his own set of moral codes. He operates to his own set of beliefs. Of all the fates that could befall one in space having an indefinite lifespan on a paradise planet. Never cold or too hot. Plenty to eat and drink. To gather together from abundance and live an agrarian lifestyle. Hardly the most horrible fate. But being a prisoner in a gilded cage... Not acceptable. A Canadian SciFi author Robert J Sawyer wrote Illegal Alien. A UFO lands outside the Royal Ontario Museum. Communications are tried. Eventually semiphore results in communication. (flags) "Take me to an Anthropologist." Invertebrate. These aliens are not humanoid. Four lower limbs for locomotion, upright. Cylindrical. Optic sensory at the top of the body. Presumably thier front. The Canadian government in consult with the UN grants full diplomatic status. Things go well until a guard protecting them is found dead. His legs severed by monofilament wire. They have less than honorable motifs. They studied the stars and found no intelligent live in the local vacininty. There belief ie they are the supreme beings the favored of their creator. Now they orbit a binary system Somewhat unstable. They orbit a G type star for a few hundred thousand years. Then the companion star a white dwarf arrives. Cold dark the planet starts orbiting the dwarf. About one million years. years. They go underground and hibernate only to return & when the orbit shifted back to the G type star. Only when they awoke some noise was detected. Not random, patterns. They were no longer alone. Much was discussed no doubt. Now this new species of primitive animal shows up practically on thier door steps. Soon they will hibernate, but these animals are devolved quickly. They are a threat. They could attack in the next million years. Well then go and sterilize the planet. They are the supreme species and any threat must be exterminated. Thier God would not allow any immoral act. So if creator does not come to stop them then they have its permission.

“We’ve outgrown you” Kirk said. That can apply today to leadership principles. Gone are the days when a person in a leadership position is a surrogate father. Years ago, I worked for a municipality in which the city manager tried to get involved in the personal affairs of the employees. He tried to get employees to read certain books, go to certain churches and also make career changes. It took someone with courage to tell him “we’ve outgrown you, your type is anachronistic.”

@@alexxbaudwhyn7572 it is the closest to the type of writing that was done in the US in 1967/68. That had moved to movie writing after 68, then died out. The producer worked on replicating music, even composing arranging and playing some of the music to use the stock music, but stretch it to scene length. The Producer/ star looked the part. He understood acting in 1969. His immediate costars were passable substitutes and the junior costars did a good job for amateurs. The stories mostly made sense to the era and the episodes that did exist in 66 to 69, even the poorer quality ones. Explaining "Turnabout Intruder" as this is the first starfleet female captain considered for the heavy cruiser command actually makes sense, and excuses Roddenberry for that apparently sexist story. In 2014 there are plenty of female USN captains and even admirals for five decades...yet how many nuclear aircraft carriers have female COs? That script also adapted the 1969 "Starship Class" designation the show had to the Heavy Cruiser "Constitution Class" that was invented in the 70s by Trekkies. Lolani was the first best episode of Star Trek TOS since the end of season 2. The concluding episode was a work of art in retro production.

I've read a lot about this episode over the years, one interesting story, according to Allan Asherman's The Star Trek Compendium, was an abandoned ending that would have revealed Lt. Palamas was pregnant by Apollo. The idea was used in the Sci-Fi novel "Star Trek: New Frontiers" and the Star Trek comic by John Byrne, New Visions "Of Woman Born". @girlgarde7 жыл бұрын
He shouldn't have tried to force them to worship him, what Apollo should've done was chat with Kirk and his crew and have an exchange of ideas with them and the Federation. He should've been like "I'm glad to see that my children have grown up to become strong and wise." and aided Humanity with his knowledge and wisdom while treating them as equals. Instead, he tried to dominate them and treated them like the Greeks of old but the problem is, his "children" grew up and didn't want to go back to being cared for like children, they'd evolved beyond his ability to control which he found out the hard way.

Indeed. That explanation is pretty close to the one that has been in place since time began. The One True God sent His son to Earth as a sacrifice, an atonement so to speak for the sins of man. If Christ is Not accepted and Obeyed, we too shall die. That is an eternal punishment for refusal to make Jesus Christ your Savior and follow His Way. Only you won't die in the sense of not knowing anything anymore and just going into oblivion like so many believe. Oh no, this is a death into eternal damnation, with pain and anguish and horror and that person will live forever in that state. While those who have accepted Christ and put Him as their Lord and Savior will spend Eternity with Him in Heaven. Call me whatever you wish, but I must say, I have sympathy for those who refuse such a Gift,,from the God who Sacrificed so much. I look forward to the time when, Christ will come back for His church and we will be, " beamed up" so to speak and off this wretched planet.

Can we appreciate how reinforced and strong Apollo's power source was... Took that long for a constitution class star ship firing all phaser banks to level that structure.

Their were a few episodes from the original star trek that I could watch over and over again. This is one ;and the other is when Kirk's friend is given abilities during an electrical storm and kirk had to kill him.
@Mad.Maxx.77 Жыл бұрын
"Where No Man Has Gone Before..." I believe was the title of that episode. One of my favorites. Gary's ESP abilities were enhanced to superhuman levels making him almost a god. He was Kirk's best friend at the time.

The destruction of Apollo's temple was executed much better than the destruction of Vaal in "The Apple." Shining like the sun and crackling with energy, finally wavering out of existence, including the marble bench. That was awesome special FX there. Also, Apollo grew to giant size before finally teleporting away! I do feel sorry for him, though. Not only was the ancient Greek god rejected by Carolyn Palamas, but the entire Enterprise crew. I'd LOVE TO SEE HIS SISTER ARTEMIS!!! SHE IS ONE HOT GODDESS, IN MY PERSONAL OPINION!!!
@indriadrayton11324 жыл бұрын
Jeff Clarke Atemis had a multitude of beasts like a cat or sow. The statues of her were pretty scary.
@calvinjackson81102 жыл бұрын
She might be "hot" to you but you would not have survived saying this to her face! She was lovely yes, but she guarded her chastity and purity with a furious vengence! Any male(god or mortal) who presumed to assert himself on her or make advances to her paid the ultimate price! Artemis did not play!!!

@corbin_47387 жыл бұрын
Apollo can make their communicators stop working, their ship transporters stop working, but apparently making their phasers just stop working is beyond him. '...in search of new life...' Well, they answered a question that haunted mankind for millenia. Wonder how that got reported to Starfleet? Kirk, "Well, turns out Ancient Greeks were right. Their gods really exist. [Laughs] I should say *existed.* We came across Apollo - yes, the god Apollo, and boy we blasted that s.o.b. Now, their gods are all gone. Anyways, all fine and dandy. On to the next planet to force our morals on - to he!! with the Prime Directive. They either listen to us or we're not wasting time on them."
@indriadrayton11324 жыл бұрын
He couldn't stop the phasers because they were reconfigured the frequency of the phasers to one that Apolli couldn't read and were simultaneously shooting at his power source full throttle.. AND... it's in the script!

"Would it have hurt us just to gather a few laurel leaves?" Kirk contemplates if it would have been so bad to do one small task, to please a race of beings who gave us so much of our history which made us what we ultimately became. As deep an idea if there ever was one.

Great stuff!! Watching the "Big E" firing her phaser banks from orbit and blasting Apollo's temple. The rest of the ending to this episode l would certainly rank as one of the saddest of the original series. Capped off nicely at the end with Kirk's philosophical ponderings.
