That's the fearful, grim thing that Star Trek preaches. "WE" are not going to be apart of it. We must face the days of judgement by our own hands in order to learn why Humanity must put away its petty notions of greed, hate and all that negativity to reach the bountiful days of Trek. There are key episodes to point at as to what we must expect to go through. Society dealing with rising homeless issues. Civil unrest. An all out world war that reduces Humanity into kangaroo courts with workers getting high, just to deal with their desperately abysmal lives. And then one Zefram Cochrane gets a group of survivalists together to restore a former weapon of war... and unlocks the secrets of the warp bubble in the middle of the forest... ...ummm... pardon? Me thinks that there is some missing chapter to this story. And then, I go hearing about some real world 'things' that might fit a little too well into that missing chapter. Like this Elon Musk guy, supposedly figuring out the first part of the Warp Bubble. If it is true that he not only got one, but three tests successfully done... including a SpaceX rocket out to Pluto and back, then that would make a lot more sense than some encampment of people polishing up an old missile. 'The 'One plus one' part is that Elon is very buddy-buddy with this Donald Trump guy. And to keep relations good, I've no doubt that Elon would gratefully share his Warp Bubble technology. AND... 1+1+1 is that among the many, MANY things Donald wants to do is to add to the national long range armaments. Imagine... just imagine this new stock of weapons being equipped with Warp Drives. Suddenly, these nightmare missiles can be launched from their silos, go into warp the second they have fully breached into open air, 'Picard maneuver' from a foot off the ground into orbit, lock on to the enemy's country and warp plunge into said part of Earth with a fleet of a hundred+ more of its' equal missile models. I mean, what top country leader ISN'T going to want instant destructive power on that level? A weapon so fast and destructive that the enemy can't possibly detect and react in time. *Gasp* And that is what I propose Zefram Cochrane actually did. He was probably some sort of military type in his early twenties that had interactions with these warp missiles. The world went to literal bleep. He survives for decades in it before locating an unused missile. Getting together a group, he camps out and starts restoration... with some dream to take a space flight. Because... Earth is so depressing to live on, right about then. He succeeds, causing a domino effect of total accidental miracles. And history just makes up whatever it wants to about his glorious flight. Now... for 'US'... not a good future. We must go to the ultimate war to truthfully learn why we must never make that mistake, again. Sure. We can theorize why we must not make this mistake in the first place. Sure. We can request for world peace for the sake of sanity. Sure. We could do the smart thing. But look at the world around us. Right now. *Are we as a species being smart?*

This is one of my all-time favorite Trek episodes, throughout all Trekdom. I especially liked Mestral- his story is continued in three Trek novels. It would have been cool to see a spin-off series or even a movie (which obviously would have been almost impossible). He ended up meeting&helping Zefram Cochrane and Gary Seven. He saved Cochrane’s life by redirecting him to relocate from New York (which was destroyed in the early years of WW3) to Bozeman,MT. It was good that he didn’t care much about the Vulcan Science Directorate… he found out about Cochrane by time-traveling! He met (and helped) Spock&Kirk, too… in the 20th Century. Without spoiling it, I really liked the ending. The final scene was a wordless moment and very well-portrayed. It really portrayed Vulcan character in a special light.

Before I ever comment I look through previous comments made by others, so as to avoid the embarrassment of posting the same comment as someone else. Looking through the comments I see dozens and dozens of people have left comments acknowledging the “I love Lucy” and Desilu homage, and it’s really clear how it’s obvious that people simply cannot control themselves and they must think that a thought that flitters across their minds is unique. It’s kind of pathetic in a way. Vulcans would be ashamed.

The downside is star trek broke Desilu and Lucille Ball had to sell it before the show caught on.

Just one more problem with Enterprise. First contact between the Vulcans and humans was with Cochran in 2063.

That was first official contact, just as Columbus wasn't the first European to see America, Leif Erikson was.

I couldn't agree more, I would open my electrolysis studio somewhere in town, add live a quiet and fulfilling life in the past... I already drive a 1951 Ford two-door sedan so I don't even need a new car, set up shop and find a small apartment... To add to the hilarity I already own two appropriate radios, a GE tube radio and a grundig of the correct vintage, and a 1950s Arthur Hinkle blend epilator, so I don't even need to buy equipment for my electrolysis business... I suppose I could simply pack my old Ford with all of my era appropriate things and head out! Which way was 1958 again?
