thank you!! i’m in college and share a bathroom with one other roommate, and our sink started to not only not drain, but also started backing up gross stuff that was stuck in the pipe. it’s a saturday, so i would have to wait until monday for maintenance. luckily i found this video and it was a super easy fix!! turns out there was this sludge in the U pipe AND a huge blockage of hair like yours shown in the video. it was disgusting and smelled awful but at least it works now! plus i showed my roommate and hopefully she stops leaving her hair in the sink… because i do not want to do that again! 😭😂 thanks again for the video, it was super helpful.

My husband and I bought our first home recently and all three sinks in the bathrooms kept draining slowly. My husband is in the military so he’s at work more often than not and when he does have time at home it’s hard to get everything done. I decided to take matters into my own hands and found this video and got all 3 sinks cleaned out. I did it! Wow! Thanks for your clear, helpful video. I couldn’t get the stopped part out because our bathroom contractor made it impossible to disconnect (with epoxy) so I shoved a thin brush up into the drain and cleaned it out. Ugh. But, hooray! Thanks for teaching me how to be self-sufficient.

This saved months of headache thank you. Mine was clogged everywhere so I had both problems you mentioned. I used water and used toothbrush to clean the pipes and it worked very well.

@@MrKistel The downstairs sink trap was a breeze to clean but the stopper assembly + drainpipe is an old-style metal fixture that I didn't try to take apart, it's pretty well rusted and I didn't want to chance breaking it. Fortunately that sink's drainpipe is short and was relatively clear, so it was still easy to get out the gunk that was there. It's draining freely now. Thanks again !

I just use a pipe cleaner that has stiff velcro like bristles and shove it up and down. Comes up with a bunch of hair and soap gunk. Repeat in a few different spots, and good as (almost) new.

I had a plumber come out and he used a chemical to clear the drain and it didn't work. I thought plumbers stopped using chemicals and take things apart. Thanks for the video--the only way is really to stop the slow draining is to take things apart as you aptly demonstrated.

Great video, though one question before I do this - I have a pedestal sink with very limited room behind it (can't even get a full, unobscured angle to see all the pipe), what do I do in lieu of a bucket, just place towels down? I'm not sure how much water to expect.

Hey man nice video. I replaced all the piping under the bathroom sink. The water drained well with the old piping but I bought a new faucet that I installed and it came with a new drain. Even though it is not clogged because it’s new, it’s not draining very slowly! Any idea why? Please help a brother out ✊🏻✊🏻

Hmm sorry to hear the new plumbing isn't draining as well. Could it be a elevation issue where the new plumbing isn't sloped down well enough? If not that maybe a venting issue?

My P trap only has one tightening ring on the sink end of the pipe, so I can't disconnect it. It's either a foolish design or a faulty installation. My P trap doesn't look like any of the ones I've seen online or on KZbin. It's looking like I'm certainly going to have to call a plumber.

Thanks for this video! The number one thing that interferes with proper draining of bathroom sinks are a build up of toothpaste, shaving cream, washing off hair products from your hands, such as hair gels, mousse and other sticky or oily products. I just cleaned out ours and YUCK. Lol

Thanks! Even though I’d assembled this sink a few years before, I had no idea the upper piece linked to the drain stop could get so gunked up. I’d already torn apart the p-trap looking for the clog and that wasn’t it, so I sat down and watched your video. As soon as I watched it, I went and dismantled the upper piece and sure enough, it was all gunked up. It also really helped that you showed how to clean that piece. Problem solved! I bought my first little war time house on my own in my 20's . So I took a evening course at the college called Plumbing for Home Owners. We did things like this, how to install a new toilet, stopping a tap from dripping etc. You can save so much money doing it yourself. Thank you to the man who made this video. Just 1 question. It's always a good idea to turn the water off as well during repairs right ?

Our sink stopper was stuck/broken in the closed position, maintenance guy came and fixed it and now it won’t drain. It immediately fills up when the water is on and hours later is still there. If the guy just worked on it there shouldn’t be any clogs..what gives!?!

Sorry to here of your sink not draining correctly situation. Perhaps he never removed a blockage in the drain pipe or their could be a blockage further down the line. It might need to be snaked if there is a clog further down. Are any other fixtures backing up like the shower drain nearest the sink?

Absolutely just de-clogged our NASTY sink drain and I feel like a superhero! This was an great tutorial for exactly our drain, and now it is running smoothly. I’ve tried Drano and baking soda/vinegar, but once I took it all apart it became quite clear why nothing would have worked. ICK! So much gross gunk. 4 years of use will do that. Glad it’s all clean now! Thanks again!

I have a strange question what if there are no clogs in the pipes...??? I started renovation on my bathroom and the sink didn't drain well then either. I updated to a pedestal sink it has brand new pvc pipes I thought this would help but it's just as slow as before. any reason why or tips to help fix this?

Could possibly be a blockage further down the drain piping. Might need to snake it. Most plumbers i believe have camera snakes that they can send down the pipes a long ways and investigate the blockage issue.

I followed your instructions to the letter. I cleared out a small hair clog. Cleaned the P trap. Re assembled. It still drains slow/standing water. What should u do next

You might have a issue further back down the drain line. Maybe try running a "snake" down the pipe to see if you can reach and remove any blockages.

Had a plumber come in after I was having issues and now the sink takes forever to drain…. So he fixed one issue but created another. Will do this myself now

I thougth wetting a tissue and getting it super wet will dissolve but no, and our bathroom sink isnt something like on a counter, and i cant do anything like that could you please recommend something thats liquid that could also help this?

You could try an off-the-shelf drain cleaner to see if it helps unclog your sink. However it might be best to physically remove the obstruction. can you get to the trap (bended section of pipe) underneath the sink?
