This was a true story Carroll took two years to write "Alyssa Lies." The song was so emotionally painful to write that he got migraines while writing. It is based on a true story of a girl that wasn't saved from abuse in time. It seemed to Carroll that no matter what he wrote, he would never be satisfied with it. When he realized that he would not be able to make the song perfect, he tried the best he could to make it realistic and sufficiently emotional. After three years, he felt it was as heartfelt as he could make it, and recorded the song

I was Alyssa 50 years ago. I thank God I survived. I am so sick of hearing about children being taken from abusive environments, only to be returned and unalived. I don't know what we can do about it collectively but pray.

Same here, no matter how many times I hear it and how many times I tell myself that I won’t cry this time, the “Alyssa lies with Jesus” line comes up and I can’t stop the tears. I guess that’s a good thing though.

Jason Michael Carroll spent two years writing this song because he wanted to make sure it correctly portrayed the tragically true story

Country Music tells stories about true life, often very bad things. But, it helps shine light on so many issues. I've heard this song since it was first released, and I still get choked up. Thanks for the reaction

My niece went to school with Jason. Both my nephews and nieces went to Youngsville. My 6 year old sister was buried in the town cemetery about 50 years ago. No one believed us back then either. Jeannies headstone has Miss America 1985 carved on it.

This song breaks my heart...I just can't understand how anyone could hurt an innocent little child...There is a special place in hell for every scumbag that hurts a kid...

I was fortunate enough to witness this song live about the time it was released to radio. Jason played this at the LongBranch Saloon one night and it was eerie. The song finished and there was not a dry eye in the building. Awesome song!

I was on jury duty about two years ago. What a mother did to her son because he was having potty training issues was heartbreaking. She took him out of school so nobody saw. The person doing the autopsy had to stop marking the charts for all of his bruises and sores because she ran out of room. She recorded him repeating that he got in trouble because he was such a bad child. He had to list everything he had done wrong. She had him sitting in a pile of snow on the back porch with no clothes on. It might have actually felt good after she had burned his back and private area with water that was set hotter than was safe. Judge recommended that she never be released from prison. I am hoping for that also. This song about it back to me.

My oldest daughter teaches in a middle school, and she has seen and reported so many of these situations. My other daughter is a mental health therapist specializing in domestic violence and trauma in children. She was also on the Child Death Review Team in two different states. That meant she went to crime scenes and autopsies of infants and children. The things they both have seen are horrific!! EVERYONE who suspects a child is being abused MUST report it! Otherwise, the worst and best thing that can happen is the child’s pain is relieved by death.

This song is the most emotionally charged song ever. I think i suggested it to you a couple years back. Whenever i need to cry, this song gets me every time. I would recommend you listen to it one time through without pausing, not to share in a react video, not to even publish. Just to get the full emotional impact.

I think the most impactful line in the song is "because there's nothing that anyone would do". Not COULD do, WOULD do. Because too many people are willing to just kinda look the other way, not get involved. Aren't willing to stand up and help.

This song fills me with such sadness, because it is the reality that children endure everyday, and have their lives and innocence ripped away, No one will listen to their cries and pleas for help. Children deserve to grow to adulthood and not end up dying before they have had the chance to actually live.

No she is the friend of Alyssa as a teenager. It was the dads daughter hearing the song and tearing her up she couldnt handle it. So the friend left behind never forgot her friend that was killed by her tormentor whether that be a moms boyfriend or her stepdad or bio dad. Words mean something and putting the word killed instead of unalived who came up with this word? The word is killed or murdered. And why is it that the words that describes the action that has taken the life of someone or that describes what someone does to themselves shouldn’t be spoken or written?
