The story behind this performance was that a big named act was scheduled to play and hadn't shown yet. I believe it was Stevie Wonder nobody else wanted to go out in front of that huge stadium with that unruly crowd expecting someone else. But Tracy stepped up and stepped out. Her voice captivated everyone.

Stevie Wonder was to be an unannounced performer as a surprise finish. He arrived and was about to go on stage when it was discovered that his hard drive with his prerecorded backing was missing. The organizers had minutes to get someone on stage. Tracy had played a 3 song set early on in the lineup (her being a no name at the time) and she agreed to go out and play again. You can hear how rowdy the crowd was at first but how she grabbed their attention and their respect.

It is amazing to watch the video of that. Just the crowd going from absolutely insane to in awe as she comes out with her guitar, and brings them into her world with her soft voice, her stories, and her music. How anyone cannot have the utmost respect for her after that would astound me.

You should watch her Give Me One Reason duet with Eric Clapton. Tracy Chapman is said to be quite shy and is uncomfortable playing in public; one reason she often appears almost expressionless with she playing to a crowd, but the performance with Clapton is different. She appears to be a bit star struck and uncharacteristically smiles through the entire song.

As a card-carrying member of the Head Banging community "Member Sense 1979'" when I first heard this song when it first came out it literally made me stop in my tracks. I was at the mall and someone was trying out a new stereo system and was playing this song and I couldn't help but stop and listen. I went out and bought this album and played it for my buddies and lets just say she gained 9 new fans that day and till this day too.

Metal head for decades here.... But before I ever knew metal existed I was a kid growing up in rural central Africa. The only music I had access to was on my parents VW bus casette player. We had two casettes: One was Tracy Chapman. You nailed it when you said, genius. She's got to be one of the most underrated or unknown superstars. Incredible songwriter, lyricist, and musician; she's so captivating. I think the industry and the public didn't know what "box" to put her in. She was Indie, before Indie music was a thing. If I had to recommend something else to listen to, I'd say "Talkin' Bout a Revolution" or "Give Me One Reason". Both were his, but frankly any song from any album is going to be awesome.

I think the emotional part for me is that she is writing from truth about her personal experiences , and then you juxtapose that with the part "imagine I could be someone" and performing it in front of that many people. It almost seemed like she was choked up at times because of it, and I wouldn't blame her at all. Amazing performance and amazing song.

I think she's her mother in one way, in that she's not willing to accept the spiral anymore, but I think she's different (even if she herself doesn't realize it) because she's not running away, she's staying put and trying to get rid of what doesn't work, which gives me hope for her kids. (I always hope there'll be a last verse about them, but that wouldn't really fit the frame of the song, with her talking to her guy.)

Chapman recorded her song in the 1980s at a time when far too many pop songs were synthesized, over-engineered, crap, with lyrics that were meant to be catchy but with so little depth you could see through them. It’s not autobiographical, she just does storytelling songs. Even tho she wasn’t overtly a lesbi¡an artist she was big in my house with two moms. A lot of the lesb¡an music was like this. Folkish, storytelling. I didn’t like most of my mom’s music but I actually found Tracy Chapmen on my own separately but she ended up being a fav of my moms. Her song for my lover is so good. It’s bluesy and just has a completely different vibe then fast car. Her whole first album is great. I heard a lot of her song “talking about a revolution” & “why” from Bernie supporters on their posts when Bernie was running against HRC. “Why” was another fav song when I was a kid. But the thing about fast car was on a road trip with friends with disparate music tastes, fast car was one of those songs we could all agree on. Great road music when you’re driving on a sunny day with the windows down.

This is one of those songs that have that feel to it that even if her story in the song isn't your story, her emotions make find that thing in you that relates. Don't know if i said that right, hard to explain. When in hear this song, it makes me feel all sorts of personal emotions only way to say it. She just has that rare abilty. Her other sings do the same thing, even if i haven't experienced what she's singing about. There's a number of artists that do that to me, but it's not a lot. "Pavarotti And Friends” was a series of 10 benefit concerts/events organized in Modena (Italy) from 1992 to 2003 by tenor Luciano Pavarotti and his second wife Nicoletta Mantovan." There are many incredible performances /duets over the course of those 10 concerts. Tracy was one of the guest artists at Pavarotti & Friends for Cambodia and Tibet on June 6, 2000, and it is a shockingly beautiful duet.

This song means a lot to me because it was on heavy airplay on the radio in the 90s when I was a single mom in a semi-rural nowhere driving to college and later starting my career. I had big dreams that were slowly being crushed by the realities of life, starting with my ex-husband who I kicked out after he wouldn’t keep a job and his mildly abusive patterns started to escalate. I’d be listening to it on the way to work in my beat up brown car wishing I could just keep driving past my job on to wherever the road would take me. I still get chills listening to this song, especially since I DID eventually go to the city and made something I wanted of my life for a little while. And then add the layer that due to more difficult life experiences, I ended up disabled, back in the same small town now taking care of my elderly parents (just mom now since dad passed this year). But I can look back at least and be satisfied with what I accomplished and that for at least a little while, I did feel like someone, and had the kinds of experiences I’d felt so left out of. This will always be a deeply emotional and personal track for me. Thanks for this video. I appreciate that you comment on the lyrics. I’ve subscribed!
