I dated a guy in high school and we new it wouldn't last. We were to different. Thirty five years later, he sent me this song to apologize and thanked me for showing him he could be so much more and a better person.

Had kind of same situation....we cried a lot together knowing wouldn't last, my "first"....I went to get ahold of her like 13 years after, while drunk....found out she was dead and I was talking to a remembrance page...had me pretty messed up for few weeks.....which I think she was like 24 or something....my second gf died from her husband poisoning her like 2 years ago after being released from c*vid stuff....n she reached out after like 10 years somehow remembered my number, which she got brutally rap** by 2 dudes n we ended n she lost her dad....ect....but actually got to speak again at least... idk I'm bad juju apparently. But she turned me on to NF the artist b4 she was gone....

@@donaldpaulson3920 I feel y'all. I was going strong with my first. I called her Lilly. We were childhood sweet hearts and I loved her so much. We likely would of lasted for life looking back at it and really thinking about it. We were together since middle school, and near the beginning of High School she took her own life. I constantly blamed myself for being too young, too dumb to realize her pain. I know I could of done more. I just didn't find out until it was far too late. She had taken her own life using a hand gun to the head. I still look back on that as one of my many reasons I became the man I was on today, I also constantly take care of others to try to make up for my failure. In a way I'm glad I do, it might hurt but I've literally changed so many lives for the better.

@@menacingpotatoleaf same man. Made me who I am along with a lot of others...life is crazy...my second GF got ahold of me like ten years after we broke up, she got brutally r*ped by 2 guys, right after her dad died bc her mom thought was just his "schizophrenia" when his colostomy bag detached inside, meanwhile she was cheating on him, which ended up inviting into home and he came onto her and her older sister, long ass story and got stories for days, but nah I just didn't know how to process at the time at all so led to us breaking up, so glad was able to talk again before she was poisoned by her husband she was with that got out of prison early because lockdown crap...she wouldn't see me because she didn't want to degrade her vows and everything because she knew something would happen....but yeah became real close with her family and friends after she was gone, apparently talked about me all the time and whatnot....breaks me heart, I keep her obituary, good friend of mine and hers cut out from a newspaper, I didn't go to her service because I didn't think I could handle it, which my buddy did go and told me he thanked God I didn't because that piece of sh*t was there all zoned out on heroin...I probably would have murdered him if i went.... literally, and not with a weapon. Don't know me so don't know but I'll throw my brother around, got like 80 lbs on me and ain't fat, gave a hernia a couple Christmas's back while wrestling bc he decided to get over amped, now he needs surgery for, put state wrestling champs hand in my cats puke and rubbed on his face lmao back in like 10th grade, good buddy of mine, many other examples but nah just to say I would have broken that dudes neck if I went to her funeral and saw him, her family understood when I apologized... which I appreciate. Life is hard as fk especially when a good person and someone you care about deals with something or the worst takes own life....kinda forgot what I was responding to, bit drunk and late, but man that's crazy and so sorry you gotta deal with the thoughts and just her being gone, another of mine is 1 of my best friends, he ended up getting with another of my bfs girlfriend while he lived in Texas awhile, secret comes up but he takes 22. Rifle walking, cops come up, took his life on the chin...the other buddy calling him over and over don't do anything stupid, felt so damn guilty took his own life....over nothing....fkd my other buddys head up bad, felt responsible, even tho on the girl.... which she was sad for like a week or two and wanted to be acknowledged by social media and everything just how bad she had it .....idk....like said many many stories

The song isn't a reconciliatory apology - it's an introspective one. I've always seen it a a song about the end of a relationship, one that didn't necessarily end because of cheating or "gross misdeeds", but because the singer is stagnant. He was happy how he was, as he'd always been, and that as the relationship developed, *he* didnt develop. There's certainly scope for the interpretation to include more egregious things, but they're not needed for the song to make sense and resonate. It's as much as an apology to his ex, as a vow to himself to be a better person and to grow and change, not necessarily in a directed way, but to move past that stage in his life, because what he lost has opened his eyes to who he was. It's not "I'm going to change *for* you.", it's "I'm going to change *because* of you."

This is the great thing about music and art. All can have their own interpretations, and yet none of them be wrong. I say this because I see this song as both what MrLboyd said, and what you said it was. And just like in my post, I took from this song an interpretation that let move on from a relationship, and focus on my child.

My wife and I slow danced to this at our wedding, and adopted it as our wedding song. It is just beautiful! It's not the apology, it's the sentiment of wanting to improve yourself in the name of your love for someone else. MrLb, you should watch the original music video to help add context around the lyrics - it's not what you think. 😉

@@rock1837 Sorry I never meant to say that he sounded bad. Far from it. I just meant when you listen to the studio version, that is the absolute perfect version of the song. taken from countless cuts, put together and streamed lined. @@talisredstar1543 Doug is a good singer and some of his concerts or single performances have been really dope. I just can not understand, why he has been destroying his good image on MTV awards shows. Almost everytime he peformed this song on MTV, it was awful. (Not the other songs he performed, just this one!) Was it stressful for him to sing the song everybody loves? Or what's the goddamn reason for that 😐🤣 I just dont get it lol. And I remember watching his live performance of "The Reason" at American TOP 40 with Ryan Seacrest in 2004. And Doug sounds there JUST LIKE in the studio version. So its not really like he could never perform this song live well. He Had also many problems with health, voice regeneration. Also his parents are from Scotland and Japan. 😉 Maybe his genes aren't strong enough

The first time I heard the song was shortly after it came out. My boyfriend at the time played it for me, as a way to express his thinking and feelings. He's a recovering addict, and I, along with his family, were dealing with the fallout due to his revolving door in and out of jail and halfway houses. I was getting fed up with it, and he could tell even without my saying so. The song doesn't have to be about a romantic relationship, nor would it apply only to a physically abusive relationship. The song is one person going within, examining themself, accepting that they've made mistakes and owning the responsibility for those mistakes.

I think what makes this song so great are the variety lenses through which it can be viewed….for me, when I was younger It was about a girl, later, it resonated as a letter to self, like a song sung into the mirror providing motivation to deal with the challenges of depression and addiction. I think that is what makes any music great - how it can touch different people in different ways

I agree with others, this is an introspective letter. The hurt he caused because he could not say "I Love You", the pain he caused from blocking off his emotions to the other person or people. It turns out this happens a lot where people cannot let that wall down to experience love, caring, tenderness, and emotion. I don't know who wrote this lyric, the first time I heard it I interpreted something along the lines of a love story that went to waste but now over the years I interpret an apology from a father to a daughter. a side of me that you didn't know, a reason to all that I knew... it sounds like a man changing his perspective when he has a daughter. I love your reactions as always.. love from Argentina 🙌🏻❤️

Your interpretation is a perfect one. Many years ago in my misspent youth I hurt someone emensely. I heard this song and said to this person " these are the words my heart is screaming to say!" The song spoke to them as I couldn't. Yes, a perfect apology letter to a romantic partner! Love your reviews!

The 2000s was the greatest time for music. You had prime Eminem. You had Jay Z. Drake was coming up. Kanye and Lil Wayne were in their prime. Beyonce was a Legend. Shakira was in her prime. Rihanna was coming up. Daft Punk and The Black eyed Peas were still cool. Linkin Park were still alive and well and together. Heavy Metal, Rock, Rap, Pop, even Goth music (Evanescence) was at its pinnacle.

@@mojorison311 For Hip Hop yes! For everything else No. You had Whitney Houston but then you lost Whitney Houston. Same for Pac. And for Big. And Eminem was pretty great but not in his Prime just yet. Hip Hop was absolute fire though, I'll give u that. EVERYTHING in the 2000s was a banger.

@@sarmadhabibkhan3036 The ‘90s had Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, STP, Smashing Pumpkins, Rage Against the Machine, Soundgarden etc. All better than the 2000s rock that mainly all sounded like the same band making similar music. In my opinion.
@sarmadhabibkhan3036
@sarmadhabibkhan3036 3 жыл бұрын
@@mojorison311 And I've only heard Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins and Rage against the machines. Also, I'm not really one to judge considering I was born in 97. I had more exposure to 2000s music than 90s. So 90s rap I know well. 90s metal and Pop not so much.

This was brilliant - I grew up loving this song, but this is my first time hearing this live version and it's beautiful! I'd love to see you react to the live version of "Best Of You" by The Foo Fighters at Wembley stadium soon; The Foo Fighters are basically rock gods here in the UK, and this live performance is so incredibly powerful both for the amount of heart that the band puts into it and how much the song clearly means to the audience. (As further proof of how big they are here, Wembley for us is like Madison Square Garden in the US, and I believe that show sold out!) kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5-sqHaphr6ie8U

Man! This song. It means so much to me. My boyfriend when I was a teenager wrote these lyrics out for me. A few years later he passed away from a drug overdose. When I hear this song, I think of him. I wonder if I would have taken him back if it would have changed the outcome. Maybe he wouldn’t have been doing drugs. Maybe he’d still be alive. 😔

This song makes me think about how much Jesus loves us and how much suffering He went through to save our souls. It makes me think about how grateful I am for His grace and mercy and how sorry I am for ever doubting His love for me ever.

This song has helped me understand my behavior and beliefs after coming out of abuse. And how those trained reactions have empacted how I treat and act with my partner. They never did those things to me, my kids didn't do those things to me. So Im still learning to be the better person and not treat them the same as my abusers treated me.

The original recording has an epic high note that you’re missing because this live performance he doesn’t do it for some reason. It’s high. Maybe that’s why. But the recorded version will give you chills. Good analysis. Glad you liked the song :)
