On the other hand I'm often shocked by my friends lack of knowledge of music I thought was unescapably ubiquitous; so I wouldn't be prepared to call any individual a liar over it. Then again most people lie sometimes if it either seems unimportant or to their benefit so.... I don't think a discussion of a song needs to be a first hearing necessarily anyway so when people lie about it it seems silly to me at best.

I love how the first verses make it sound like she was the toxic one, and then Kimbra's part comes in and forces you to reevaluate everything he said in the first half of the song. Considering she only had 6 or 7 lines of lyrics, I find it really powerful.

I love that this song gives both sides of the story. A very accurate depiction of a break up in that it's not just 1 persons fault. I also love how well they harmonise. It gives the feel that they know each other very intimately, even if the relationship is ending

I work in the trades, and there's usually a radio on in the background. I find most "pop" music bland and mildly irritating at best. Yet every once in a while a new song comes on that makes me tilt my head to one side like a dog. When this first started to get air time, I loved it's quirky - almost playful - musical nature contrasted with the darker, yet still kind of fun lyrics. Sending a friend over to collect records is such a wonderful inclusion, and very relatable. No complaints!

Gotye, an Australian, and Kimbra, a New Zealander, have also done an arthouse type of video of this song. Without giving away too much, it involves paint and is quite surprising. Gotye took this song, which I think he wrote, to the the Eurovision Contest and won! Please check out the other video and you will enjoy it.

The female singer's name is Kimbra, she's from New Zealand. I highly recommend you listen to some of her songs. "Come into my head", "Plain Gold Ring" and "Settle Down" are three of my favorites. I recommend her live versions of her songs because she's a loop artist (she's been looping before it became popular) and she records all of the individual sound layers of her songs live before putting them together and singing the melody over all of the vocal loops.

They're not singing to each other. She is singing to him, but he is singing to somebody else. Without the video, you have the line "and I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know." The video drives this home with Kimbra's alternating loud & soft harmonies being represented as fluctuating desperation & frustration as she tries to get his attention, until she finally gives up, gets painted out of his world, and then the cycle starts over with her being the new somebody that he used to know. The song and video in its entirety truly is a masterpiece.

Wally (Gotye) is one of the nicest people I've ever met. I remember seeing his first band, Downstares, win a battle of the bands when he was in high school. I wasn't surprised at all when he won a Grammy.
