I’ve lived in these types of areas for 20+ years, just recently moved out and I can honestly say “pardon me” or even just saying “pardon” as you walk by someone’s personal space breaks down tension significantly more than “excuse me.” To people in those areas “excuse me” is more confrontational. I agree, but you're ignoring the fact that it's 4am in the 90's and in Harlem. Totally different situation, because they're 100% either up to no good, or are in the middle of partying and you could easily be a victim. Idc what color their skin is, it's a sketchy situation to walk into in an impoverished neighborhood that has a high crime rate. It's basic self-preservation.
@DsChelI
@DsChelI Ай бұрын
@@gregsteele806makes sense. I’d say it’s because “excuse me” is actually more of a command when you think about it. You’re asking them to move. Instead of pardon me. Where you’re asking out of respect. I always even say sorry, to show that I don’t mean to be inconveniencing anyone.. haha maybe the Canadian in me.

Okay, since no one is _actually_ explaining it, here it is: First of all, women often find male anatomy to be visually unappealing, but they care about dimensions because the famous act is perceived through touch rather than sight. So, sweatpants are particularly alluring to them because they get the important information without the unappealing visual details (e.g. body hair and reminders of the hygiene issues some people have). It assists in the fantasy. So, the idea is that grey sweatpants provide more shadow detail than either dark (all shadow) or light (too reflective for shadows) sweatpants. Meaning, the claim is that men's packages can be more effectively viewed in grey than another color. And, if a guy were inclined to wear something particularly tight, the lady might catch a glimpse of the "print", being able to discern anatomical dimensions, and draw inferences from there. Again, assisting the fantasy.

And on the other side of things, in the 2000s especially, it became popular for young women to wear these clingy, thin grey sweatpants when they'd go jogging or work out. And, yeah. Definitely didn't leave a lot to the imagination and definitely assisted the fantasy, as it were.

The truth is someone outside their comfort zone tends to act nervous, which draws attention to them, because it triggers instincts in the people around them, making them nervous. If you feel like you belong, you walk at ease and the people around you feel safer. We all have a genetic instinct for fight, flight or freeze, which is triggered by fear. If you trigger unease in someone (especially men) you can and push their fight instinct and they may confront the perceived danger.

I agree. Although I live in a fairly small central Valley CA city, there are areas that white, black, or brown people are looked at with suspicion if they are walking through it. I have never had an issue walking anywhere at any time. There was only one time that I was walking through an area where people who are white or brown are not welcome. It was about 1 am. As I walked down the street, there was a young man on the other side who crossed the street and walked toward me. The way he carried himself and the fact he crossed the road had me shaking in my shoes. I had only a few seconds to decide what to do. As he approached I smiled at him and said, "Good evening." We passed without incident. The next day I told a coworker what had happened. He told my what I did was "perfect." I neither showed fear nor came across as a threat.

Communities shouldn't be about skin color. They should be about shared values, respect and wanting to help having a nice neighborhood that's save and feels like home.
@1980JPA
@1980JPA 19 күн бұрын
I agree, but the comment kinda sounds like a platitude. if only the people in power thought that way, because neighborhoods being about color was the point. It was planned, and not by the people of color that lived there. They were pretty much put there and the repercussions of that have continued since considering the planning never stopped including gentrifying the area and specifically moving them somewhere else since the property value is low (as was intended) and can be snatched up once developers need a place that hasn't been developed yet. In America, city planning has always been about skin color. You are correct that it shouldn't be, but such a basic statement lends nothing to the situation.

At about 16:00 he's dancing around it a lot, out of trying to be nice and I understand. What I think he's getting at is this: people in suburban communities see someone, regardless of color, that looks out of place and they will call the cops or band together to "protect their neighborhood" by trying to project strength through numbers. I work as a Sheriff's Deputy and get so many reports of things like "there's a meth head at the park across from my house!" Then I get there, make contact with the alleged "meth head", and it's just a guy that looks rough around the edges because he works a hard labor job and he's trying to sit in a park and relax and he's super nice. People in general are very visually judgmental. If you don't blend into your surroundings people tend to be nervous of you.

Since you’re from Long Island, you’ll understand. My late husband, who was white, lived in Little Neck, Queens, the last county before entering Nassau County. Growing up, most of his friends lived in upper class Great Neck. He would regularly have the cops called on him because he drove around Great Neck in a beat up old car and he clearly didn’t belong there.

I live in Windsor, Ontario. I went skateboarding at all hours in Detroit in the late 90's. Maybe we were lucky, but everybody we ran into was nice enough. Homeless peeps would buy booze for us (none of us were 21) and just ask for the empty bottles. A homeless dude was harassing us at Hart Plaza one time and the other homeless dude that we knew had just came back with weed for us (he could've just taken the money). He pulled a gun and threatened the guy not to screw with us. It was disturbing and hilarious at the same time.

I like Bill Burr, have heard hundreds of hours of him talking on his comedy shows, guest on talk shows and podcasts, his own podcast. Thats why this video came up as a suggestion for me. I have also spent a lot of time with lots of people from different countries and races. Listen to a lot of hip-hop since the 80s, really gravitated to the stuff that laid out the disadvantages of being black. So this video intrigued me. I'm four minutes in and I already love you guys. Subscribed and now I'll go down your rabbit hole.
