Sarah described the meaning behind the song….”I wrote “Angel” after being on the road for almost two years straight and was both mentally and physically drained,” McLachlan wrote. “I went to a cottage north of Montreal to relax and write and read an article in Rolling Stone about the Smashing Pumpkins keyboard player who had OD’ed in a hotel room. She continued, “the story shook me because though I have never done hard drugs like that, I felt a flood of empathy for him and that feeling of being lost and lonely and desperately searching for some kind of release.”A good song of hers to react to is Building A Mystery, another great song.

According to McLachlan, who wrote the song, it's about drug addiction. She wrote it after reading some articles in Rolling Stone magazine about musicians turning to drugs to deal with the pressures of the music industry and ultimately overdosing. She talks about the writing of the song in an interview. The song is hauntingly beautiful.

She actually wrote it specifically after Kurt Cobain was found dead in his hotel room. She referenced it 9n her Storytellers episode on MTV

First heard this in my headphones riding my daily 40 minute train ride into the city. It really took me aside. I thought it was a goof for the first 10 seconds. Once she hit the chorus, I realized it was a legit song. Great mix of sound & vocals. i remember when this song first came out and was blown away by her voice and the sadness of the song , i remember well what she said shortly after releasing this song , now i know what she said later after the song was blowing up about the smashing pumpkins heads member but i think she did that for commercial reasons , the story i heard her tell in an interview, was she was reading a paper about a women who suffered from schizophrenia all her life and couldn't take it anymore , she had suffered long and hard and had tried several times to commit suicide ... till she finally did , everybody is more than welcome to believe what works best for them but i know what i heard and who said it , for what it's worth , whether it's a mental disorder or drug overdose or puppies starving to death , it's about hopelessness and despair , no matter what the root cause. nobody could have put a voice to it better than Sarah .

That is definitely the song you think it is when talking about those children's aid commercials from back in the 80s and 90s. I had the good fortune of meeting Ms. McLachlan a couple of times back in the 1990's when we briefly shared the same talent agency out of Vancouver, B.C. I was nowhere near her league in regards to talent and ability, but she was the most gracious and kind person you would ever want to meet - beautiful inside and out with a voice to match and the most expressive eyes I've ever seen. Her concerts were amazingly intimate and I would be happy to hear you react to pretty much any of her songs in the future. Thanks.

I saw her perform this song not long after my mother died of a stroke. And that inconsolable loss is what hit me. The delusion that I could bring her back. And someone finally pulling me from that and telling me to take comfort in what was and what I had. I know what she wrote it about. But that’s what it is to me.

You got it. This song IS not about religion or typical 'angels' saving people in the religious sense. IT IS about drug addiction, about shooting up with heroin. That's the angel here. And dying in a hotel room in the arms of the angel. The desperation, the escape from life with the angel. Go back and listen to the lyrics knowing the subject matter. Its moving, poignant and sad.

the commercials you're thinking about MrLboyd, are for abandoned and hurt animals. Sarah is a huge proponent of saving animals and lent her voice (both singing and speaking) to their cause. As far as I'm concerned, you really should listen to the studio version (although singing Live is also gorgeous - but I'm unsure if this particular one is early enough to truly do the song justice?) They used this song for the Soundtrack of the Nicolas Cage movie City of Angels (where you might have heard it first).

I was 16 @ the time & now I’m 74, & know Jesus is saving more today than ever before, so I say find a revival & get delivered 🔥
