A California medic soldier who was stationed in Iraq, told me about the time she and her companions heard this song for the first time. In her words “Although I heard the original hundreds of times, this one pierced my heart like a bullet. There were no dry eyes in the room” Mission accomplished Angelina. Thank you for another wonderful reaction and keep up the good work.

I was a young adult in the 60's, and this was one of my favorite songs. Therefore, I was skeptical about any changes to the original. Then I heard this and was just blown away. This was my favorite Angelina performance until I heard "All I Ask". Michelle Phillips, the only surviving member or the M & P's, and the co-writer of this song, raved about Angelina's version. She liked it so much that she posted it on the M & P's Instagram site. Not only does this showcase Angelina's beautiful voice, it also showcases her songwriting talent. She takes a classic pop song and transforms into a brand new song; for me, better than the original. That in itself is a remarkable feat. But when you consider that she is 12 years old, it boggles the mind. Another great reaction! 💕

The guitar player, Ivan Mendez, said that each time he was invited to work with Angelina they would spend the day together with her family at her house. After socializing all day, in the evening they would go into the music room, chat about songs and then she would pick one or two. Often neither of them knew the song at all. Ivan said he can clearly see his errors during the playing, trying to learn a song real time, and always in awe of Angelina. So she's not just reading the lyrics, she's singing something for the first time while hanging out after dinner with the fam and friends. A reactor named Alan Papier has excellent personal interviews with both Ivan (California guitarist) and Egil (Norwegian guitarist) on his channel.

I love this version as well. At some point, as she gets older, I can fully integrate the prodigious talent, with the artistry and the work. But I don't think I will ever fully comprehend a young girl, in her room, with just an acoustic guitar as accompaniment creating music at the level, or better, of older, accomplished musicians, in bands, and full studios. Many of these singers themselves were prodigies. After years of watching and listening to her, it still boggles my mind.

Angelina can take any song and somehow make you feel like she is the one that wrote it. She pours so much of her own soul and style into it that she is able to bring a deeper appreciation to the lyrics she sings. I also have to point out that this cover was posted on The Mamas and The Pappas Instagram. A pretty big accomplishment for just a 12 year old recording at home. When we told you she was going to impress you with everything you hear from her, we weren't exaggerating ;)

Rusty, I hardly ever see any more comments about her "Mona Lisa smile." Which is a good thing, in my opinion, because I've always thought Mona Lisa was a little homely looking. :-) And Angelina has grown from a cute little darling into a stunningly beautiful young lady (sorry 'bout that, Mona!). But I do know one thing, and that is -- she is the Leonardo da Vinci genius of vocal artistry, in a league all her own!

I have said many times that Angelina has killed songs for anyone else: Stay, A Million Years Ago, and just recently All I Ask, but I don’t think that’s the case here. Angelina’s innate musicality and that incredible voice turns California Dreamin into a gorgeous, plaintive memory that she handles vocally better than anyone. But this, to me, is like Bohemian Rhapsody. Angelina re-interprets the song so completely that any comparison with the iconic original is impossible. Since the 60’s was my music, I really love the unique sound that exploded from the Mamas and the Papas-so beautifully showcased in this song. I think Angelina gives this a separate musical life that I love in a completely different way. Her Bohemian Rhapsody is one of the best musical performances I’ve ever heard, but she doesn’t kill Freddy Mercury’s version. She gives us a take that reinvents a masterpiece. What’s so incredible is that Angelina has already done this across many genres, and her musical life has just begun. She is my favorite singer of all time, and no one is close.
@nurulc3 жыл бұрын
To me it is her masterful control of emotion. The original was the deam of escape, she is lamenting the loss of a dream.

I’m a loyal Angelina fan, but the original song was a happy carefree version with joyful singing, which holds a special place in my teenage years in the 60’s. That said, Angelina’s version is absolutely amazing, just like a different song.
@r.fairlie71863 жыл бұрын
Helen, I’m a similar age to you. I know exactly what you mean. I recommend you to look up Queen Latifah’s version of California Dreamin’. I wonder if Angelina heard it too and realised that this song could be good for to be creative with. Both ladies are great with jazz too. This other version is arranged as a Bolero and I first found it via a young Brazilian couple on KZbin who were dancing to it. It’s so different from her RnB style and I prefer her voice in this genre. Just key in “Brazil Central 2010 Bolero Lidia Freitas and Monique Marculano” to watch some poetry in motion. (I used to dance this style but not as well as these two...) For just the song, key in Queen Latifah - California Dreamin’. If you like it, please check out her version of Lush Life (and more on YT). For me she’s better with non-RnB songs.

Did you hear her giggle at the end, and look at both of their big grins. This is the first time I’ve seen her actually giggle and smile so big after a song, and I think she was just tickled that they did it so well on that take. How is this humanly possible?! Talent is so amazing.

Growing up in the sixties, this Mamas and Papas song is a part of the soundtrack of those times and very dear to those of us that lived in that era. This is absolutely one of my favourite covers from Angelina. Great reaction Mr Boyd, and funnily I completely agree with you, and everything you said. Here is my take on this: This is an iconic song that everyone knows, and it is being played on the radio for over 50 years. Hall of fame song as well, so without doubt a great original. Now here is the thing - probably everyone who likes the original would say that it conveys some happy feelings, West coast style, sunshine and freedom. However - this song was written in New York (I think), and the lyrics are clearly dark; the words "grey sky", "cold" and "the cold, like the priest, is gonna stay" all make it clear that someone is freezing, maybe even feel depressed, a bit lost in the cold winter, longing for the "summer" or even longing for "a better and happier life" in general. The Mamas & Papas did not convey those dark emotions though, but Angelina does. She has the ability to do that simply by slowing down the tempo and the tone and breathiness of her voice. She basically can sing every single word so clear and slow, that you feel every word. When I first heard this rendition, it was winter here in the North of England, the skies were grey, the days dark, the people certainly less happy, so her rendition resonated with me very much. Finally, I cannot listen to original anymore - this song is now Angelina's version in my musical memory. For a young girl quite an achievement.

True - dreaming of escape to lamenting the loss of a dream. It seems as if she ignores the original song, reads the lyrics, finds her own emotion from them and turns it into music. I have to wonder if she is even conscious of what she is doing. Genius.

Yes, another Angelina home run! It seems that is just what she does! I think the usual musical concerns (playing the peoper notes at the proper times) that consume most musicians are so in her after even one or two listens that she can focus nearly completely on delivering the message and emotion of the piece. That is why she is at such ease when singing, she knows she can deliver the technical aspects of whatever she is doing (even if that involves reading the lyrics as she sings). You should listen to her cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I WIll Survive" so AJ can ruin another song for you!
