If I'm not mistaken, she was 19 at the time of this concert. She wrote the song when she was 11. Aurora is the fifth element, an artist who must be protected at all costs. Check out The Seed, the Haik Concert songs, Warrior, Queendom... really anything of hers is worth your time. The guitarist sings the low notes - he is male.

But I never seen/read/heard that Ren or Aurora are even aware of each other. At least I (as a fan) don't remember, that Aurora ever mentioned Ren. As a little girl in Norway she spent a lot of time in the forest with the animals day and night and has always been special. She was terrified of performing at first but wanted to share her thoughts and music. She wrote this one and many others when she was just a girl. In her performance of Heathens at Rough Trade East, London, she dedicated the song to “the Mother who takes care of the people who aren’t welcome in heaven.” That’s a comforting thought. One of her most fun songs is Cure For Me. But as usual with a deeper message. It’s a protest against conversion therapy to “cure” bisexual and homosexual people. She’s bisexual and regardless of what anyone thinks of that they should respect her courage. I’m hetero and I do.

This is an early outing… She is now touring her fourth album ‘What Happened to the Heart.’ Every song on this is different, each brilliant musically and lyrically. She just released a video collaborating with Jacob Collier for Greenpeace, another masterpiece: I weep every time I hear it, and I’m a seventy-three-year-old retired psychologist. She didn’t want to be a performer, but her mother said she could help others by sharing her gifts. She hated performance for the first few years, then learned to empathize with the reactions of her audiences, and it has become a nearly mystical experience for her and her fans. Do yourself a favour and jump down this rabbit hole.

Yaaaaaaaaaaasss!! Haha I’m so glad you loved her! What’s so special about her is how completely unafraid to be vulnerable she is. At 19 she was able to be completely emotionally transparent. She’s developed so much as an artist over the years and just become even more so but she has also never stopped growing musically. No 2 albums are alike. No 2 songs are alike. The scope of her music and soundscapes is incredible. Her latest album has huge electronic elements and edm and 80s influences but while keeping her vocals so uniquely hers. She really has spent her whole career writing about what it means to be human. She’s so inspiring. This was such a fantastic experience to see it again through your eyes. I’m excited for your journey.

She gets killed and in the end she comes back to haunt him. “Through the eyes of a child” live at Nidarosdomen (cathedral in Norway) 2017 This is also an important song for her. “Murder song (5,4,3,2,1)” live at the Nobel peace prize concert 2015 A song about mercy killing. The pool of amazing performances from Aurora is very deep, but sooo worth the dive. If I were to recommend a more subtle tune of hers, try "It happened Quiet", Live at the Current. Super-crisp and personal...just her, a guitar and her backup singer in a studio. Then again, like others have mentioned, Murder Song (5,4,3,2,1) is almost required listening and comes in 3 flavors, all amazing...this concert, the video, and NPR's Tiny Desk Concert (which comes with 2 other tunes) Also, she's mentioned before that the way she moves on stage is almost compulsive, in that she has to find other ways to let out the music, so she dances and moves with the flow.

She was actually very nervous here she said in the interview after the performance, it was her largest performance so far with 8000 in the venue and cameras recording for TV. But she has this ability to get completely lost in the music, so it doesn't bother her in the moment, but then when the song ends she "wakes up" and looks really scared. She performed 3 songs at this concert, and between Half The World Away (Oasis cover) and Runaway, she said a few words to the audience and the Nobel prize winners, and she ended with: "I'm truly honored to be here, and a bit frightened". Aurora agrees with you about channeling the music, she said this in a 2019 interview that is on youtube: "I don't think I opened my eyes the first year (of her career), and I usually stood in one place, and I moved my hands a lot quite frantically, because I have so much energy when I sing, and I can feel like you know, it comes from like a different place, like from the place of music, if it's... you know this divine place. I get like... I get too much energy for my tiny human shape. I didn't really know what to do with it, so it kind of made me almost shake." But NOW I know where to put it: Out... you know, to the people in the crowd, and my eyes are open and my hands are open, and it feels very good so it has evolved a lot." And she said this in a 2022 interview: "Because when they (songs) come from you, eventually they will come to an ending.... ...but when it goes through you, there is no ending to the source. It is very endless."

On the background singers, the male guitarist does a lot of them for Aurora. You can see it in the Murder Song. He's a really good accompanist. Also, fun fact, Aurora is "The Winter Voice" in Frozen that calls to Elsa.

I was looking for someone to point out the male vocalist! He's playing the guitar and not seen early in the video due to the camera angle. (You can see it circle around him for about 7 seconds starting at 19:01.) I believe his name is Odd Martin Skålnes. If you end up listening to Murder Song (5,4,3,2,1) from the same concert, he and Aurora are alone on the stage. He plays the acoustic guitar and sings in immaculate harmony with Aurora.

I believe the guitarist you see silhouetted sometimes in the video also did background vocals (he duets with her on another song from this performance, and you can see here he has a mic), so there's at least one male vocal. Definitely doesn't explain all the vocals we hear, though. I can't be completely sure it's him doing the big, belty "oh woh-ohhhhh"s through the climactic section, but I think it probably is--sounds like his voice. That specific bg vocal is actually one of my favorite parts of this performance. It's so simple, so incredibly consistent, and so effective. It's like the definition of support to me; it actually makes me a little emotional. (My a cappella background is definitely showing there. There's a special value in that environment of doing just one vocal thing over and over again perfectly and consistently, when the arrangement calls for it.) If that part's a track, I don't want to know, haha. None of this is to overshadow Aurora! I just really love that background part and nobody ever comments on it - it's easy not to notice it on a first listen. Since you love giving some shine to background singers, I'll mention the guitarist/singer I'm talking about is known as an artist as O. Martin and you might really like the duet I mentioned: "5, 4, 3, 2, 1 (Murder Song)" from this same performance.
@Retro_Painter2 ай бұрын
Her drummer, Magnus, is also singing along with O. Martin and his voice is more of a baritone which creates a greater range of vocal sounds. Of course, a vocoder could also be used, but I think all the vocals in this performance are live. Aurora always has band members who are good singers as well as good instrumentalists.

There's a video game called Sky: Children of Light that did a collaboration with Aurora a few years ago, where they designed a playable concert experience (using her studio tracks, but the player audience was live) that would go between a concert setting with Aurora in the ruins of a colosseum and different sequences out in the world of the game. So the players would be butterflies and birds and jellyfish following the light source of Aurora's voice through these sequences, and it culminated in a big finale in the colosseum, it was gorgeous. One of the devs had been to one of her concerts and wanted to recreate the feeling of that experience. There were thousands of us playing at once and we broke the record for a live virtual concert ☺️ There's a recording of it on the official Sky KZbin, I think. Not a suggestion for a reaction, just something to keep in mind for later if you're interested, or just an example of how much of an impact she's had on people emotionally *and* creatively 🥰

Aurora Akness, named because her mom said her blonde hair reminded her of the aurora borealis. AURORA is the recording artist of over 100 wonderful tracks, including different versions of many of her songs. Aurora is also the name of the roman goddess of the dawn, the greek Eos - and she uses alot of her symbolatry in her videos. I leave any other connections for you to judge : ) I think she is from another world maybe. Notice the shot where the light looks like the sun and it joins with her head. Of course that is me being fanciful. However, she constantly uses the themes of the sun and light and the morning, which is the domain of Aurora. She definitely knows the correlation. Her latest tour has an opening graphic screen they show of her rising up and then she shines and energy comes out of her fingers. Superb production.

So many people that do reactions are kind of clueless about the technical aspects, and often also refuse to do research before OR after they watch the video - I really appreciate that you take the time to get acquainted with a little background of the song to give you perspective on what you're talking about, as well as actually analyzing the technical AND emotional aspects of the storytelling she does. It paints a really complete picture of the piece instead of just "wow guys that was good". Aurora is one of the best artists alive today at conveying raw, childlike wonder and emotion in her work.

@@TimWelchVocalStudio thanks! but for real (in case it got cut off) her live performance of "the dark dresses lightly" at Roskilde is life changing! kind of the perfect song to showcase her variety, playfulness, and intensity!

Great reaction and analysis. I discovered Aurora same time as Ren two years ago and wow, two amazing original artists. Murder Song 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 at this same venue is a MUST, a truly stunning performance.

I want to agree with everyone saying you need to check out Murder Song 5,4,3,2,1 from the same concert. It is utterly haunting

There are literally hundreds of stellar Aurora performances, but a couple that stand out in my mind are "It happened quiet" live @ the Current, and any song from the kexp Iceland mini concert. And any of the songs from the Nidarosdomen concert. Many people compare her singing style and voice to Bjork, and Delores, and I completely agree. Also, all of the members sing, but this is the original backing vocal from the song. Magnus, the previous drummer featured here, has a very deep singing voice, and usually provided the deeper tones in the live performances. There is also Martin, who has sings the mid-tones. I don't know the name of the woman who is backing Aurora in this performance, but Silja Sol used to do all of Aurora's live backing vocals. Silja's voice is as heavenly as Aurora's voice.

Just a tidbit of info… Aurora is largely self taught 😮 another great song to checkout that’s quite different from this is “Churchyard “ live at KEXP

Awesome reaction and analysis to this special artist! Glad to hear it's going to be a "rabbit hole." For even MORE expressiveness, "Murder Song" from the same concert is what you want! Insane performance. For a lot more of those yodel flips, "It Happened Quiet" live at Nidarosdomen (though the stripped back The Current version is probably more popular). And my favorite vocal performance of all is "Black Water Lilies" live at the Honda Stage. Her voice is all over the place (in a good way) on that one.

I would actually recommend watching both full concerts for KEXP in Iceland, and HAIK in Norway. Each video is about 30min long, approx 6 songs in each performance, and they show you a good range of her songs and style of performance as she gets older and gains more confidence on stage. They are mesmerizing and emotional!

Funny you mention Dolores O’ Riordan, Norway were one of the early colonisers of Ireland so a lot of us are descendants. The technique Dolores done is known as keening. The Irish is caoineadh, pronounced keen-ew, meaning crying/weeping. Women went around to funerals to keen and got paid for it. Of course linked to Banshees. Supposedly County Kerry keening is the closest to a banshee 😂

I had read somewhere that Magnus, the co-producer and drummer was responsible for making those base tones in the back. Perhaps modified.

So much music, all different and she constantly changes her songs. Yes, an Artist but different. Jump to a recent one, "Soul with no King" but the Vevo version. Stripped back, her singing and a bit of keys plus one on strings. Stunning.
there is a male vocalist playing guitar on her righthand side. he is featured on murder song.

I’ve seen some recommendations for older performances, so if you want to compare to something recent from this year: The Dark Dresses Lightly live at Roskilde festival. You can see you a huge change in her confidence on a stage. My other recommendation would be: Infections of a Different Kind live at HAIK. She is truly in her element during the Haik concert.

Another Renegade&Weirdo here and I am SO glad you’re checking out Aurora!! Absolutely ethereal, punchy, graceful, and piercing. Love love love her Adding another suggestion I haven’t seen a lot of people mention yet, Exhale Inhale (live version for VEVO) gives me goosebumps just THINKING about it.
