I’d argue there’s actually an incredible amount of power in Guy’s final line. Though Alan Moore’s book led to him becoming a more widely known symbol, Bonfire night is the reason people still know who he is today. Without that he really would have just gone down as some failed assassin to be forgotten in history. Instead he was immortalized. So offensive to the crown were his actions, that not only was he viciously tortured and killed, but for over four hundred years his enemies and generations of their descendants have gathered annually to burn him in effigy. Their hatred was so real, that the very people who he sought to tear down ended up insuring he would never be forgotten.
@Bobal273 жыл бұрын
Oh, that’s a deep cut. I didn’t think of Bonfire night that way. It seems like our (US) Independence Day on the surface, but really it is basically the opposite, celebrating unity under the crown, instead of separation. More than that, screw this Guy in particular, who tried to take out the crown. That really is the crown ensuring he’s never forgotten, which is a display of force that backfires in its message, since there wouldn’t be a celebration without his (failed) rebellion. His rebellion at least succeeded in giving y’all an excuse to light off fireworks :)
@matthewmac57873 жыл бұрын
@@Bobal27 for a bit of context you may not know. The plot that guy fawkes was a part of was never for the removal of the crown just to replace the current monarch with a puppet. Basically the group Fawkes was a part of was very Catholic and hated the fact that England had separated from the pope and wanted to right this by killing off all of parliament and the current monarch and replace them with a young relative, (I think they were ten years old) which they could use as a puppet to restore England to what they believed was the true religion and then beg the pope for forgiveness for the mass murder. So less rebellion and more hostile takeover for religious reasons which backfired horribly. Luckily the entire group was a bunch of idiots (which was a bit obvious since they planned to take out the administration of the entire country they planned to take over along with the monarch). Part of the group that went to the countryside to rally the people to the new monarch failed horribly since the locals didn't give a shit, one of the group *WARNED A MEMBER OF PARLIAMENT* to not go to the next meeting, and after an investigation they found guy Fawkes the night before the plot drying the wet gunpowder barrels next to *AN OPEN FLAME* that would have brought the saying "blow up in his face" to a new level.

To clarify - Guy Fawkes didn't just get caught like an idiot, he was tasked with looking after the barrels, under the houses of parliament FOR WEEKS and one of the other conspirators got scared due to them having to reschedule the "event" and the barrels having to stay there far longer than originally planned so sent a letter to the king telling him about the plot. Guy was tortured because he wouldn't give up the ring leader or the other conspirators, he didn't cave. That makes him a boss in my eyes (not because I agree with what he was trying to do, just that he didn't relent when tortured).

Hell yeah my dude's just PUMPING these out. Lloyd and Peter are gonna love this shit for real. They love reactions with a lot of substance to them. Guy Fawkes' insurrection attempt is called "The Gunpowder Plot," so he's just using that to build to "rehearse" because it failed. I think the loose connection to the movie isn't really intended. They probably know about the head rumor, they're just trying to write good bars that Che would hit with and the face on a magnet is a nice juxtaposition. You might not be familiar with Epic Fail Guy or 4chan (and frankly you don't want to be) but in its heyday it's the web site where basically every meme would be born before it spread out into the internet. The site is built to be as anonymous as possible (which leads to it being the absolute sewer of the internet) and as such when the users of the site raid other sites or cause varying amounts of mayhem they refer to themselves as "Anonymous." They would often wear the Guy Fawkes mask for whenever memery would bleed to in-person stuff because V for Vendetta was a fantastic movie about a populace using terroristic means to pursue a noble ideal - very much the ideology of a 4chan raider (see: Church of Scientology v Anonymous). "Epic Fail Guy" was a frequent meme there and was a stick figure wearing the Guy Fawkes mask, usually presented in a one to four panel comic demonstrating how someone totally failed. In short, it's an INCREDIBLE bar. Cuba Commander/Destro = Cobra Commander/Destro I never caught that Guaido bar and I think you're the first reactor to. That sounds 100% right and intentional by them I agree Che won, but that "these rhyme skills are not evenly distributed" line is so fucking fire I always want to give it to Fawkes

George Washington vs William Wallace is a savage ERB. Also, if people wanna get the gist of what communism is about just listen to John Lennon's song "Imagine". A lot of people herald that as basically the communist manifesto.
@jLL-r9s3 жыл бұрын
I actually can't perceive it as a communist manifesto, though Lennon called it that. I'm not so sure Lennon understood communism or leftist politics more broadly. I mean there are Christian Marxists, which would inevitably want religion in a communist society. And Marx never really took an anti-religious political position, rather critiqued the function of religion as tool for capitalist control. He even pointed to the possibility of religion being an organizing feature within working class movements. Likewise, Marx was a materialist, so inevitably believed in owning material possessions. His critique of capitalism was about building systems not built on commodities, where value is derived by use rather than by scarcity and profitability. Likewise, Marx didn't layout how common ownership would be held. For example he notes that individual producers do not have a direct conflict with the capitalist class and are sort of outside class conflict. Therefore, private producers could exist within communism. He also stated support for worker's Co-operatives, which Engels and Marx called cooperative society, so a small amount of workers would own the means of production.it would be the ownership of a small collective. Where as "Imagine" expands it to all possessions. "Revolution" was explicitly anti-communism, at least in so far as revolutionary leftism goes. I guess if I was going to attach Lennon and Yoko to an ideology it would be post-leftist or proto-post-leftist, as it seems to sort of reject the materialist aspect of most left-wing ideologies and embraces a more idealist perspective. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Post-left_anarchy#:~:text=Post-left%20anarchy%20is%20a,s%20relationship%20to%20traditional%20leftism.&text=Post-leftists%20argue%20that%20the,and%20incapable%20of%20creating%20change. Perhaps more influenced by Max Stirner and Nietzsche, idk? Or even more broadly marketed towards a hippie consumer base.Who knows what his intentions or motivations actually were?
@SomethingScotty3 жыл бұрын
@@jLL-r9s I think it's more John Lennon believed in the core concepts of communism. I mean when you think about it with all the negative connotations associated with it out of the picture, it does kind of seem like the ideal way to have things. Of course communism would never work in our world because we as a species haven't overcome our desires and lusts for things. It really only works when every single person is both fully aware of what is asked of them, and is entirely willing to contribute to the greater good of the nation. As long as people hold onto their desires to be better than everyone else, or want absolute control, etc., that form of government will never work. “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others that have been tried." - Winston Churchill
@jLL-r9s3 жыл бұрын
@@SomethingScotty these are assumptions. Lennon's position seems only to be anti-Marxist-Leninist, which was a deviation from Orthodox Marxist beliefs. However, as I stated Lennon's interpretation of communism was way off. For most of human history we functioned in societies without currency, production was based on need, which also allowed us to go after our creative production rather than produce commodities for productions sake. Marx called this primitive communism. Your perception of human nature follows YOUR ideological view, however Marx actually states that human nature is multifaceted and depends largely on our social conditioning and material reality. There's been plenty of anthropological and sociological studies that have born this out. I think Marx had a much better understanding of "human nature", than liberals, tbh. guilfordjournals.com/doi/abs/10.1521/siso.2016.80.3.375?journalCode=siso#:~:text=Human%20nature%20is%20that%20part,expression%20of%20their%20human%20nature. There are also forms of communism that focuses exclusively on individual actions, organization, and needs and desires. There are after all, communist ideologies not attached to Marxism. Such as egoist-communism/anarchism. Which was a common held belief system within the New Left, which gained roots in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Emma Goldman was a figure that held these beliefs. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Egoist_anarchism [Stirner's philosophy is usually called "egoism". He says that the egoist rejects pursuit of devotion to "a great idea, a good cause, a doctrine, a system, a lofty calling", saying that the egoist has no political calling, but rather "lives themselves out" without regard to "how well or ill humanity may fare thereby".] "Political liberty,” what are we to understand by that? Perhaps the individual’s independence of the State and its laws? No; on the contrary, the individual’s subjection in the State and to the State’s laws... Political liberty means that the polis, the State, is free; freedom of religion that religion is free, as freedom of conscience signifies that conscience is free; not, therefore, that I am free from the State, from religion, from conscience, or that I am rid of them. It does not mean my liberty, but the liberty of a power that rules and subjugates me; it means that one of my despots, like State, religion, conscience, is free. State, religion, conscience, these despots, make me a slave, and their liberty is my slavery." "Revolution is aimed at new arrangements; insurrection leads us no longer to let ourselves be arranged, but to arrange ourselves, and set no glittering hope on "institutions." "I do not step shyly back from your property, but look upon it always as my property, in which I respect nothing. Pray do the like with what you call my property!" "If a factory-worker must tire himself to death twelve hours and more, he is cut off from becoming man." - Max Sorbet There's also a quote by Stirner where he speaks on workers taking control of production and the products they produce. I can't find the quote rn though.

White one argument is that Guy Fawkes day celebrates the failure of the Gunpowder plot... and that is certainly the official line, but I certainly know a lot of people who consider it an enactment of celebration had the plot succeeded. Other than being tradition and a good excuse to set off fire works, most Brits consider the holiday as weird as everyone else does.

"Communism is a philosophical, social, political, and economic ideology and movement whose ultimate goal is the establishment of a communist society, namely a socioeconomic order structured upon the ideas of common ownership of the means of production and the absence of social classes, money, and the state."

And every place that practices it so far is actually just a dictatorship or an oligarchy with little to no effort put in disguising it.
@jLL-r9s3 жыл бұрын
@@Syllaren which capitalist system doesn't have an oligarchy? Many are monarchies, lol. And I think you might want to actually look into many "communist" systems, which generally have a limited democracy which prioritizes decentralized control. Slightly less democratic than the U.S., but far more decentralized. China is an example of this, but is often called a dictatorship.
@Syllaren3 жыл бұрын
@@jLL-r9s did you see the part where I mentioned capitalism. Cuz it wasn't there. There isn't a comparison here, this wasn't a conversation about what is superior. Plus it's not exactly against the core beliefs for there to be a capitalist oligarchy, although I would like that not to be a case. However communist dictator/oligarchy is a fucking oxymoron. You can't have both. So every communist system right now just lies and wears the flag of communism. Also west Taiwan is a fucking oligarchy of the highest example. Going against the CCP leaders is fucking suicide. All decisions are made through there, they use the sarf to shut down anyone who insults them at all in media. Everything is under their control. What the fuck would you call that if not oligarchy? Also to be clear, west Taiwan shows more commonality with capitalism, than it does communism.
@jLL-r9s3 жыл бұрын
@@Syllaren yeah you didn't mention it, which seems hilarious to me. It's even more hilarious when you state equate "communism" with Marxist-lenninism, lol. I could just imagine Bakunin and Kropotkin shaking you down, lol. China has a mixed economy as outlined by Deng in 1978, lol. Deng stated the goals of what "socialism with Chinese Characteristics" is. As long as the Chinese people see their incomes and quality of life rise, then they will continue to support the CCP. I don't know what Taiwan's system has to do with this, lol. They are still a multi-party system that the DPP has held power multiple times since 1988. Also, as you stated they are primarily a capitalist economy, where as China holds more nationalized industries. However, anywhere capitalism exists, an oligarchy will form, so it's kinda irrelevant to criticize Marxist-leninism on these grounds. Especially when they explicitly state their goals, which is to industrialize through capitalism and begin to transition towards socialism. Now, we will have to see where the Chinese route actually takes the Chinese people, and whether it's worthwhile in the long run. However, that's a very different perspective than your original statement.
@Syllaren3 жыл бұрын
@@jLL-r9s yes they continue supporting the CCP. Also the fact that information that doesn't support the CCP isn't allowed to be on any platform in the country. Makes for a good support system. Also it's good that you have such an extensive humor that not mentioning capitalism in a statement that had nothing to do with it and drew no parallels or references to it is funny to you. Idk why you seem to think I've got to like the American government in order to criticize west Taiwan's. Also what I'm insulting is the fact that there is next to nothing "communist" about a place that's been ruled by a "communist party" for decades. Why the fuck wouldn't that be something to note when discussing communism. The reality is the first thing people think of when they say "communist country" is west Taiwan.... Yet west Taiwan isn't a communist country. That was my subject. It has absolutely zero to do with whether or not capitalism is a better system or not, and it makes no claims as such. Also you may have guessed that I also dislike the American government. Especially the factor that they refuse to acknowledge Taiwan's independence from west Taiwan, or take a stance against west Taiwan breaking it's promises about hongkong.
