This is one of my favorite anti-war songs. It blends some hardcore metal vocals with almost operatic parts with an almost soulful groove on the chorus. A great song. Damn they were TIGHT live! This kind of chaotic stuff is really hard to play live. Technical stuff aside, it's giving it that frenzied, yet synchronized feel that's a real feat. Glad you loved this song mate. It was written pretty much as the Iraq War happened - hence the references to “dancing in the desert” and “anchors sitting dripped in oil”, which alludes to the US fleet camping in the Strait of Hormuz while they “liberated” Iraq. You got what the song was about anyway, which touched on how the working class have always been sent to fight wars for the goals of the rich and their political lackeys.

He didn't say they were, you don't think our government is above banning a red blooded, born n raised American citizen from air travel, or just snatching them up for saying they don't agree with uncle Sam. Look at Edward Snowden, hell look at the current case with Daniel Hale. Tons of government agencies slide the media inside info, it's not a big deal, IF.... that info helps the government in anyway, paints a pretty picture over an ugly wall of truth. Daniel Hale though, was accused of giving an investigative journalist truthful information in the public interest about secretive US drone warfare program. Revealing gross human rights violations, and that drones were more deadly and less accurate than the US presented publicly. In a particular 5month stretch, ninety percent of people killed were not the intended target-including an American father and his teenage son. Most of this was signed off on and escalated by Obama, but Trump of course kept it going for a while. He was charged using the Espionage Act from 100yrs ago, and only in the last 5-10yrs has there been an uptick in its use, it states that you are a full blown spy and were caught spying on/against American interest. The courts also proclaimed that any testimony by those accused under this act, and any physical evidence supporting the accused will not be allowed during the trial. So Hale took a plea deal, he'll probably get 10, but the feds wanted life. This is also a huge shot at journalists and the media, intimidating them to not use trusted government sources out of fear of arrest. Control of the media is the first thing an authoritarian dictatorship does.

System of a Down have literally saved my life several times. Their music, and that of others, have given me a way to vent extreme overloads of emotion that were pushing me to kill myself. When the world becomes too venomous to tolerate, when stupidity and selfishness cascade in greater and greater volumes and frequency over the poor and oppressed, there music let's me know I'm not alone in seeing it, and their words give voice to the pressure in my head. I have tried to escape a few times and failed to do so or was stopped. SOAD pulled me back from the cliff edge so many times.

They break off the soothing, groovy section early, which deals with escapism, to go to the aggressive blast beats and the lyrical call to action, essentially "breaking through" the before mentioned lies. I could not think of another band that has creative details like that.

They usually communicate their message through the lyrics and emotionally underline it or give a sense of urgency through the music, but the music on it's own (only talking about the structure, of course) pretty much follows the usual format.

My father joined the Army to go to college and medical school as an Army doctor, and Mom still worked two jobs to support us as well. He climbed ranks so that his kids could go to college without loans.

They have now abandoned that as well, since the statistics don't support it. Now? Now it's: Maybe we'll pay for your college. Maybe.

SOAD is as conscious as RATM, just a lot more cryptic to the casual listener (except on Prison Song). They're all of Armenian decent, and they incorporate themes of Armenian culture, including their folk music, particularly in the vocal style, but also the history of their people. I've jokingly called their style "Armenian Folk Metal" for years.

I figured it for Desert Storm in Iraq in the 90s. They used to televise bombings as they were happening, watching SCUDs beamed into peoples' homes. Bill Hicks actually did a bit on it in his later specials.
