Good tutorial as always, however if anyone gets stuck on the black screen with the red light, just open and close the disc tray, it will restart the Xbox and then you can access the memory unit/usb again and it should work. Hopefully this helps some people out

I just got one last week. Paid a little extra for it and seemed to have lucked out completely. Its a 1.0 board manufactured jan '02, still reads disks perfectly, but the inside was minimally dusty and the clock cap was completely intact... Crazy... Still removed the cap though.

for those who don't want to FTP the eeprom you can also create a backup and move it over to your tiny USB drive you used for modding and then back it up on PC/cloud. You'll probably want to learn how to FTP to move games to your XBOX easier but if you want to use the tools you've already got it's another way to achieve the same thing.

I had my disc tray drive open and I was IN BLACK SCREEN MODE FOR 10 minute but I close the disc drive it restarted. DID the same attempt before and Now I can go in softmod mode. THANKS!

Thank you for this instruction video, I finally have my og 2001 Xbox working again! (has a failed optical drive since 2004) It wasn't as simple as yours in your video though. I had many issues trying to setup the soft mod, eternally frozen on splash screen, stuck on flashing red led, stuck on a gray screen. Here's what I did to finaly succeed on my old 2001 Xbox with original hdd: Deleted my riped music, set my Xbox language in english, turned off 480p, 720p and widescreen. Thank you again and everybody who posted comments that helped me finishing my installation.

Thanks for the tutorial!! I've been trying to mod the og Xbox since I was gifted one as a child. You're the goat!!! For anybody having an issue with this. The key to this is patience. It honestly took me 3 and a half hours of trying and retrying, setup up 4 different USB drives, and trying all of them repeatedly. Idk if this helps at all but after each failed attempt, go into the system memory, delete the "unleashx" save, reboot the console, then when you open the USB again, double tap the A button. I'm not sure if the double tap actually does anything but, after trying and trying, the time I double tapped the A button was the only time it worked.

EDIT: Nevermind. I found a Reddit post that helped with the region and resolution. Had to run the included NKPatcher application and somewhere in there was a thing that to patch the EEPROM to NTSC. Remains to be seen if the skin will still reset every time :) Original message: Mine doesn't change to NTSC and 720p even though I'm using XBOX2HDMI. It always reverts to PAL when restarting the system to apply changes. The only reason I did this mod was so I could get rid of the interlacing.... It doesn't even remember what skin I've chosen after restart. Always reverts back to the default.

I remember years ago hot swapping IDE Cables between an old AMD PC and the Xbox cuz you had to skirt around the HDD locking. Still by far the hardest "softmod" I've ever done, so glad to see there are easier ways now cuz that process suucked lol

Xbox Modding has come a long way since 2007 when I started (i still have the old Xbox Modding book too). I used the game method back then with the Linux save and it amazed me. It was the first time I had used FTP as a protocol. I also used XBHDM which was an old hard drive tool where you had to hook an old IDE drive up to a PC to prep and build the drive so the xbox would recognize the bigger drive. My current Xbox is an Orange crystal with 128mb RAM upgrade, 2tb drive fulled up and HD support. I usually run it in 720p mode. Has XBMC as the dash.

There was a lot to experience and learn the first time if you modded an Xbox back then, totally get it! I believe it was 2006 or 2007 for me.

Important Tip - I was using the Xbox2HDMI adapter and had the menu set to HD by clicking both sticks and pulling both triggers at the same time. Following the instructions I got the black screen with red led but nothing ever appeared on-screen to continue the process. Turning on the XBOX and then back on I turned OFF the HD menu and put all video settings back to default. Redoing the steps as listed it immediately went to a black screen, red LED light, and then the next softmodding window popped right up. It seems that the softmodding tool is expecting a certain resolution in order to appear.

I Found That anything 2gb and below works. I used a old 2gb Micro SD card and a Usb 2.0 to micro Usb adapter. It works. Also made my own xbox controller port to female usb.

I come from a place where OG Xbox is not very.. popular, one could say. So finding the specific games for the OG XBOX to softmod it is super hard, especially for newcomers like me, as i recently found and grabbed an og Xbox and i was waiting for a moment like this to come where it becomes more simple, now i just gotta grab the the usb adapter that's needed to do it and oh boy am i excited, plus i'll be able to swap the old HDD for an SSD and play some backups without the feeling that the old HDD might die on me! Finally! You forgot to make the EEPROM only 1s if I remember is more safest than just have the backup so you and other people that not have the EEPROM backup can change the hard drive easy.

I didn't forget, just times have changed and it's introduced issues for people wanting to get onto Insignia. Changing the key can also break certain saves and will break any installed DLC. Plus if you're already registered on Insignia, you might have a hard time registering again. Not to say changing the key is bad, but it's more so recommended for people who are aware of what will happen.

Hey ive run into a problem at around the 17:55 mark... After pressing I understand it should have gone through the patch but instead seemingly broke. The xboxs light started flashing red and my tv lost signal... I waited about 5 minutes but nothing happened, after that I opened and closed the DVD tray but that didn't change anything so I decided to turn the thing off an on again, After doing that I was back where it started, with a red blinking light and no tv signal. I had a look online but really couldn't find anything... I had a quick look through the comments on this video but couldn't find anything.

so i got to 16:25 and was stuck because it would stay on the black screen and the softmod tool didn't show up. i spent hours yesterday on reddit and the discord trying to figure out why it wasn't working. turns out all i had to do was put the top cover back on. i had it off for easy access to the hard drive and that was what caused the issue.

I have seen similar comments, but I am stuck on the black screen after the green orb. It does what the video says and red ring, but just stays on black screen without the menu thing popping up. I am on my 12th try. I have two 256mb USBs and a 512mb. Black screen using the smaller ones and I actually am using the 512mb one I successfully set up Insignia with (using your video), so I know for a fact it works. I saw other comments about changing the AV source working. Have tried it on my 720p monitor and my old CRT with composite cables, no luck. Also made sure my setting were "No" for the other video options, as stated in another comment. Unsure what I am doing wrong or maybe if my Xbox is un-moddable lol.

When I have my Xbox hooked up to my CRT TV with composite cables I never get past the black screen/red ring phase of the softmod, but using an LCD TV and component cables works just fine. Anyone else run into this?

You probably have to go into your video settings and disable the additional resolutions like 720p, 480p, 1080i.

A quick note I discovered while doing this, if your Xbox hard drive has a significant amount of files it might freeze the process. My Xbox came with about 2gb of ripped music and it didn’t work until I deleted it.

I saw a tutorial that used an IDE adapter to do the modding (edit files on the HDD) instead of a USB adapter. Would love to see that as I can’t even find USB adapters where I live, and I also have an old, IDE-compatible PC laying around.

You can do that if you've already dumped the EEPROM or if you hotswap. I don't plan to cover that as I'm sure most people won't want to dump their EEPROM using external hardware, and hotswapping to a PC can be a pain.

I’m crying. My OG Xbox sit in my room not running for almost a year because I can’t get the correct disc for my 50Hz China version which I thought a European 50Hz. Great tutorial! My xbox froze on the screen where it is supposed to freeze and never boots the gray rocky5 screen after several minutes. Tried it about a dozen times each on 6 different USB drives of different brands and storage sizes - including recommended USB drives off amazon that are known to work. Tried all 4 controller ports. Not sure how to troubleshoot.

I've seen a few people not have luck like that until they deleted their game saves, If you want to back them up and delete them you could try that.

@@MrMario2011 Thanks for the suggestion MrMario! I actually *did* figure it out! Before selecting the memory device where you go through the freeze if I first went into the xbox HDD and perused through it a bit to "warm up" the disc drive (I could literally hear the seek and search arm moving around which probably means the HDD is about to die anyways) and after touching different places in memory then went to the USB drive it would get much further (I could see the USB stick working harder and the screen would flicker as the xbox reboot) and then it got stuck on the black screen forever and this is where @that_tofu_fox7519 top comment's advice about opening and closing the disc tray (and then perusing the xbox HDD again and then selecting the memory device again) worked for me at that point to get to the gray modded xbox screen!

Stuck at the "mount data partition on x" step, it look like its working but then it says "mounting error, data partition root is corrupt"

Reformat the USB drive and try again.

​@@TheTacokiller11I had this issue. I just followed the steps again and it worked. I think I ejected the drive after I unmounted it and that may have caused an issue.

@@MrMario2011 I like to keep my modded consoles looking stock so was hoping I could boot to retail dash unless I want to use a more advanced feature then I could switch to a custom dash for that. Is that possible?

Dashloader Customizer is the best you can do, but it's pretty neat, I use it. It's the modern dual boot, back when you had to press either Eject or Power, to load either a stock bios for xbox live, or a modded one. Now you just hold 1 of 8 different buttons. Dashloader is installed by default on Rocky5's softmod. Dashloader Customizer is an app that allows you to select up to 8 different buttons to load 8 different dashboards. I hold A for the stock dash, B for UnleashX, X for XBMC4Gamers, and no buttons pressed defaults to Emustation. This also works in conjunction with IGR, In Game Reset. Instead of manually going into your apps folder and browsing to another dash, just IGR and hold a button, so easy. You can also make UnleashX look like a stock xbox somewhat. Connect the xbox to the internet, browse to the skins settings in UnleashX, press Y to open the download servers, select the bottom server. It should populate a gigantic list of skins to pick from, but only allows 10 to download at a time. I prefer Blackbox Jezz X, I think it's called. Modern, but old school.@@cheddar6738​

This mod just eliminated a lot of e-waste!!! I have an OG memory card to pc adapter for loading saves to the xbox. Confirmed it’s working with that, doing a hybrid of method 1 and method 2 lol

using the Windows Disk Management tool to create a 512 mb partition on a usb and then make whatever space that you have leftover to be unallocated

I have a old usb inserted and get a message "MEMORY UNIT 4A The memory unit you inserted isn't functioning; it may be damaged" I connect it to my PC and get nothing on FATX. Thoughts?

Might try the opposite? Format it in FATXplorer then try it on the Xbox.

Won't let me switch to 720p. Even 480p says No and I can"t enable it. Any suggestions?

It depends on the application or game. UnleashX for example can run in HD, but most games cannot. Make sure you adjust and unlock your video settings within the stock Microsoft Dashboard.
