Tetris: The Grand Master Completed 1cc GM Rank Arcade

Tetris: The Grand Master (Japan 980710). Default Settings. Played with MamePlus 0.134, no tools, cheats, autofire, or save states were used. Completed with 1 credit.
I must confess that Tetris is one of my weakness, I simply love it. Tetris The Grandmaster (TGM) is one of the best Tetris out there. It's some kind of hardcore Tetris in which games don't last more than 10 minutes.
The game/series included some new interesting improvements and concepts. On one side was the IRS (Initial Rotation System), which allows us to have the piece rotated before it appears. This is vital for more advanced levels. There is also a short delay that allows us move the piece when it touchs the ground. This is essential, especially when we reach 20G speed (the pieces fall instantly). From 20G on, not only are reflexes important but also the placement of the pieces.
In order to achieve the Grandmaster Grade, you must be at least grade 1 when you reach level 300 and grade S4 when you reach level 500. Finally, you must be grade S9 and reach level 999 in under 13 minutes and 30 seconds.
Well, actually this gameplay is not no big deal, since KZbin is full of videos of excellent Tetris players who play a lot better than me, with higher speeds as Shirase mode.
Arika's saga is formed by the following games (all Arcade exclusives except Ace, that was developed only for Xbox360)

Me encanta Tetris, es una de mis debilidades, y cuando Arika lanzó este TGM se me abrieron las puertas del cielo. Digamos que es un Tetris un tanto hardcore, donde las partidas no duran mucho más de 10 minutos, y con cada pieza que cae se sube un nivel.
Me parece el mejor Tetris de todos (la saga entera), y no hay día que no eche alguna partida rápida.
El juego/saga, incluía una serie de novedades y conceptos bastante interesantes. Por un lado estaba el IRS (Initial Rotation System), que nos permite tener la pieza girada de antemano. Esto es vital para niveles más avanzados. También hay un pequeño retardo que permite que la pieza no se coloque nada más tocar el suelo, sino que nos permita moverla un poco. Esto es básico, especialmente a partir de la velocidad 20G (las piezas caen instantáneamente).
A partir de esa velocidad, ya no solo importan los reflejos, sino también la colocación de las piezas. Se puede decir que hay que jugar un poco en modo pirámide, para que las piezas puedan bajarse como si fuera una escalera (de otro modo no podemos desplazarlas).
Para conseguir el rango Grand Master en este juego deben cumplirse las siguientes condiciones:
1. Debes tener al menos grado 1, antes de llegar al nivel 300.
2. Debes tener al menos grado S4, antes de llegar al nivel 500.
3. Por último, debes llegar al grado S9 y nivel 999, antes de 13 minutos y 30 segundos.
La saga de Arika cuenta con los siguientes juegos hasta la fecha (todos exclusivos arcade, excepto el ACE que solo salió para Xbox 360):

Bueno, en realidad esta partida no es nada del otro mundo, ya que KZbin está llena de vídeos de Tetris que le pegan varias vueltas a este y en velocidades más altas como el modo Shirase. Pero vamos, yo toco un poco de todo sin llegar a dominarlos, jaja.

Very nice play. I am also a huge TGM fan. I just wish more people knew about this game/series. Sure, it has a high difficulty learning the 20G mechanics but once you get the hang of it you can play this game for the next 10 years and still improve your skills.

exmosquito Thanks mate! Well, compared to many experts out there, I'm not a very good player as I can't get any better than 20G. I usually play the Death Mode of Tetris The Absolute The Grand Master 2 Plus, and once I reach level 300 it's almost game over, haha. Anyway, I love this series, they are the best Tetris games and they are perfect for short gameplays. They are pretty basic, but at the same time they are extremely hard to master. Maybe one day I will reach Shirase Mode if I keep playing for the next 20 years, haha. Cheers!

Hah same as me. I can't seem to get below 12minutes on TGM1, and I'm about he same as you on death mode. I havnt even bothered to put any time into TGM3, I'm not ready... I plan to change that next year though! :)

@@MrMaskaman I can kinda handle the heightened speeds of TGM2's second half compared to TGM1 (thank NullpoMino and Heboris for that), and in said game engines I can confirm that it's entirely possible to get Grand Master with the Standard rule (Ace-SRS in Heboris). Now, to get GM with the actual TGM rules......

A mí se me cae la baba con las partidas en modo Shirase o invisible. Eso son palabras mayores. Trust me Scott, I'm a terrible player compared to real Tetris pros. Search for gameplays beating Shirase mode or playing with invisible pieces. That's truly insane and it's probably the most similar thing to superpowers.

@@MrMaskaman That’s true. You may not be a world record-tier player, but your skills are still very impressive, at least to me. I’ve played about 2 or so hours of TGM1 via MAME and the furthest I’ve gotten, being a non-competitive Tetris player, is about Grade 4, so seeing someone make it all the way up to GM is super impressive, at least to me. Setting the comedic hyperbole from my previous comment aside, you still seem like a pretty great Tetris player.

Muy bien jugado! A mí me gusta los 3 juegos de Tetris TGM (El 1, 2 TAP y 3 Ti), ademas de que los tengo y los juego la mayoría de las veces al menos una vez al día (a veces). Por ahora he llegado al nivel 300 con grado 4 (Creo que llegué ahí y morí en el 304 :p) en este juego, y he sacado el grado 4 en el TGM2 (No me acuerdo bien de cuales saqué en el 3).

¡Hey Wilmer! Me gustaría pasarme el modo death del TGM2, pero mi habilidad tiene un tope y lo veo imposible. No sé si podría llegar a conseguir tan siquiera el rango Master, que es aguantando 5 minutos. Este primer TGM tiene requisitos mucho más sencillos para conseguir el rango Grand Master. En la segunda parte se les fue la pinza y subieron mucho la dificultad.

@@ElRinconDelWilmerN64 Jajaja, no sé cuántas partidas habrás echado, pero yo empecé igual y acabé consiguiendo el rango Grand Master. Para mí el salto de verdad está a partir de 20G (piezas que caen instantáneas), porque ya no es una cosa de velocidad únicamente, es que tienes que ir amontonando las fichas de una manera en la que puedas encajar la siguiente que vaya a caer y no te dé problemas. Quizá en un directo eche alguna partida suelta, pero he perdido mucho nivel y no estoy para pasarme el modo death ni de broma. Es un auténtico "no death", jaja. ¡Un saludo!

At 6:41 it NEVER EVER allows me to rotate the red 1x4 piece in a situation like this, grrrr.. how do you do that?

Sometimes I cannot rotate that piece in similar situations, but do you keep the button pressed before the piece appears? This way the piece appears already rotated. I don't know if you refer to that.

Hola! Veo que eres de los pocos españoles que juegan a esto. No sé si has jugado tambié TAP o TE, yo hago gm con relativa facilidad en TGM1 pero no paso de S7 en TAP. ¿Qué grado sacas en TAP o TE?

@@MrMaskaman TAP es el 2 sí, y TI terror instinc (que no TE, que soy un anormal xd) es el 3. Hay una versión para pc del 3 que es clavada a la original en teoría porque la placa era un pc con windows. Yo en el modo death del 2 me he llegado a 400 y poco y el master me lo he terminado pero no paso de S7 o así, es mucho más difícil que el 1. También es que se vuelve tan rápido que yo creo que los pocos frames que se le pierden en mame lo hacen aún un poco más difícil...

No sé si es ese el que introduce la mecánica de guardarte una ficha y sacarla en cualquier momento, pero no estoy acostumbrado a ello, y aunque parezca una tontería, saber usarla bien a esos niveles requiere tiempo y dedicación y me da algo de pereza xD.

@@MrMaskaman Sí, ese incluye la función de guardar ficha, también te muestra varias fichas siguientes en pantalla y es más permisivo con los giros. A cambio es aún bastante más rápido que el 2
