Fallout 4. Modder's paradise, a batch of potential, and Bethesda's biggest game next to Skyrim. Obviously, it holds a special place near and dear to the hearts of many of us on this channel, but how does it fare in 2022? As we continue to roll back the clock weekly on all these games, it's time to see if Fallout 4 is the fine wine we imagine it to be.

Despite Fallout 4's flaws, I am utterly shocked at how the settlements and endgame legendary grind breathes some life into subsequent playthroughs. I know the Workshop DLC's get a bad rap but they truly feel like they expand the game's creativity factor. For a game with survival adventure game type crafting that is a pretty big plus to me. Just hope they learned not to remove skills and skill checks. Fingers crossed for the RPG elements in Starfield.

@@thedoomslayer5863 Once i saw the first fallout 4 trailer at E3, i got FO3 from steam. And i loved it too, when i began FO4 i didn't like the dialogue system, you don't carry the weapons in your back anymore and also the permanent death of your companions and durability systems for weapons were downgraded but the construction systems, weapon crafting, items, perks, world building and even a substitution of karma with relationship progress with each companion was a positive evolution for the series, the combat and power armor got a notable upgrade too. And that formula got even better with automatron. And the story line got to the finest with Far Harbor DLC. If they get their things right and fix the RPG elements with starfield, it's gonna be the ultimate rpg.

I loved how fallout 4 handled power armor mechanics-wise but just how common they were ruined it for me. The mod "Some Assembly Required" is how I think they should have approached it. You find the frame first and then find various pieces of armor throughout your playthrough until eventually you have a full armor set and can play as a legit tank. The fact that you get a full armor set within the first 30 min of the game was a major blunder imo.

For sure. The way you're describing it is much more in line with what I enjoy in good RPGs: giving you a small taste of some interesting shit early that you can't yet access because you're too puny and green. But now you know it's there, and so you indirectly are given something to work your way towards achieving *if you want to*. I can see why Bethesda did it the way they did, though. It's an early game hook to get people excited, and they probably did it to appeal to a wider audience. But I personally was not a fan. Thanks for the mod recommendation. I never finished FO4 and have been thinking about trying again. I'll be sure to add it to the list.

FO4 was a pretty good game and i enjoyed exploring. The combat certainly improved. It failed epically as an rpg and lacked what i expect in a Fallout game however. I was hoping they would build off FO3 and the greatness of NV(obsidian i know). Instead they dumbed down the rpg elements. Even Skyrim was barely an rpg and i'm being kind. FO4 just lacked the magic of 3 and NV. I really hope they put the rpg back in upcoming Starfield.

@DrkStorm1
@DrkStorm1 2 жыл бұрын
@@eaglegolden8326 Biggest thing for ME that defines an rpg is choice and consequence within the game that effects the story and ending. It was a good game but just not what i was looking for in a fallout game.
@eaglegolden8326

@@DrkStorm1 Even Fallout 4 is more an RPG than 90% of RPG games in the industry cause we have choices, a less linear story, JRPG don't give often a possibility to choice things, and even without choice in the story the moment you can embody the character you want in a universe u can evolve its an RPG. RPGs are a wide range of things, of which everyone can find something that corresponds to at least one element of RPG.
@KingInfernagon
@KingInfernagon 2 жыл бұрын
@@eaglegolden8326 the definition of an RPG isn't the point. Its nowhere close to what you're trying to define towards his point. His point was that as a sequel to Fallout 3 and especially New Vegas, its expected that the RPG elements and mechanics would evolve, not downgrade. Fallout's main selling point other than its post-apocalyptic setting is its diverse and wide array of dialogue choices. Fallout 4's dialogue system is objectively inferior compared to earlier titles for obvious reasons. Again, you're far from the point. RPG elements and mechanics vary but its obvious the reasoning was in regards to a downgraded version of a certain mechanic rather than it being an "RPG than 90% of the RPG games in the industry"

I dont think people were desperate to hate it at all it removed a ton of things that people loved and added some okay to just bad things. people who are very role play heavy the voiced protagonist was horrible for people who liked options and choices in dialogue like matty says ruined it for alot of people and since the voiced protagonist is tied to the story it was also dragged down alot for them. They changed it from an rpg focused game to a sandbox focused game which bethesda seems to be course correcting with starfield. Fallout 4 was what i believe was a decline in quality compaired its predecessors i used to think fallout 4 was a really good game before someone asked me how many times i actually replayed the main story which was well none i didnt care to beat it more then once unlike 3 where ive replayed it 6 or 7 times. And new vegas which ive replayed at least 10 to 12 times. I do like how they returned to normal on the botherhood and left the enclave alone the institute was a great idea aswell but my god the rettcons to lore was also annoying. Its not a good fallout game in the stanard of rpg but its a pretty solid shooter and sandbox so to sum up. A lot of people didnt enjoy the changes that were tied to the story aka dialogue settlement system and perks. as it made the game less of the rpg that fallout was known for. Others like me were annoyed by the rettcons just for the "cool" factor or ideas that they had just fell short even though they were good ideas to begin with like the settlement system was good removing most towns to make space for settlements less so.

@@raidermaxx2324 In my opinion it’s only been 76 that could be called a disaster. Fallout 3 and Skyrim were goty contenders and 4 is a great game, so I don’t agree that Todd Howard and Bethesda have realised disastrous games time and time again. If you don’t want to play starfield, don’t play it. We’re not tricking ourselves just because we have a different opinion to you, I think that’s a silly thing to say. I could say that you’re kidding yourself, that their games are great and you’re in denial seeing as you’re watching a video on fallout 4. But that’s a ridiculous thing to say to someone just because they don’t agree with you.

I stayed away from this game for years due to all the online bashing. Finally decided to try it out during the pandemic and absolutely loved it to the point I've been trying to get all of Bethesdas games since. It's not the fully fledged rpg old fans expected but it's still truly great, especially the combat lore and weapon mods. It also gave me that home cooking as I'm from the area, a lot of real places are in the right spots generally, and frankly what's not cool about a post apocalyptic settlement in Fenway Park!

That's one way to see it. Personally, I found Fallout 4 great at first and was blind like Matty, until I replayed the older Fallout's only to realize how shallow the game is. I'd say I'm more forgiving of it now, but I wouldn't say vanilla gameplay has gotten better. But that's simply due to how many amazing mods there are to fix some of the issues. The only reason I re-play Fallout 4 these days is the modding.

This has got to be my favorite game of all time. It was my first Fallout game and my first open world game I ever played. I never knew a video game could be so massive and have so much content. Needless to say my imagination went wild after discovering the scale this game was capable of. You never knew what or who was right around the corner or what may happen. I remember seeing a super mutant for the first time and getting absolutely wrecked. I took that personal so I tried to find the best power armor I could find to hopefully even the odds. No game has ever had me so hooked, no game has ever made my imagination just go absolutely wild like Fallout 4 did. And no game will ever come close to the experience I had with this game because of the circumstances of it being my first Fallout game and my first open world game. This game will always hold a special place in my heart because of that.

@@Samual_33 Yeah I just reinstalled it after like a decade not playing with Open MW on my old laptop too. It’s WAY more stable than modern Bethesda titles especially on the Open MW engine. I haven’t crashed a single time. It’s probably one of the deepest RPG experiences I have ever seen done. I still remember the first time someone told me it was a game where you could literally just do whatever you want, and you didn’t have to automatically choose a good guy or a bad guy. And you didn’t have to play a specific character the game gave you, it was your own decision to be the hero or the villain. Compared to most rpg like final fantasy or something where you have to play the character they give you, it was a whole new thing. It definitely takes getting used to the mechanics though. It’s more like Dungeons and Dragons with dice rolls for combat. And because it’s all text based it’s more like reading an amazing novel than it is playing a game. I like to just zone out and go deep into the lore and role playing. Plus using text let them make the story so much deeper because of the money it costs to voice a thousand characters, the later games got better looking and sleeker but they lost that world building. Each game got less deep, and less interesting. Morrowind is truly a one of a kind experience. Part exploration, RPG dice rolls, but real time combat. I don’t know of any RPG that did it like that to this day. Skyrim is more like an action game in comparison, and Oblivion was actually even bigger than Skyrim, and had way better quests, but Oblivion suffers from some sloppy gameplay and leveling choices. Still a way deeper and more immersive game than vanilla Skyrim. However Skyrim with mods is truly another masterpiece. Skyrim without mods is the best looking and most exciting gameplay overall, but actually Oblivion and Morrowind are still way better games. I never even really played the main quest in any Bethesda game after the first few play throughs either. Something about just exploring and role playing in those worlds is better than anything I have come across in any other franchise. Fallout 3 was great, and I never played Fallout 4, but the Elder Scrolls was my favorite franchise ever made. Truly a role playing masterpiece. Just the right combination of role playing and gameplay, but you really get the choice to just play however you want. You can sink a thousand hours and never touch a main quest line and still it beats most modern RPGs. What kind of character build did you go for on your recent playthrough?
@SynthLizard8
@SynthLizard8 2 жыл бұрын
As cool as the intro was, it's the most insufferable and long-winded, it pretty much murders any head-cannon you had for your character, was X before the war and had the personality of X? well you are a loving spouse that desperately wants to find their child which the game built Diamond city mainly for that purpose from the moment you try to enter, to the moment you set off with Valentine. You are also softly tied in to using the Power Armor and settlement system with the world around you facilitated just for that, that's what the fusion cores are for unless you want access to the populated vault or using the gatling laser. Of course who can forget the Dialogue system which got absolutely butchered due to the voiced dialogue, removing the 2 key essential ingredients of Fallout, it's like cake without the sugar or filling. This severe disapointment on top of humiliation that is Fallout 76 is what killed my love of the franchise for me and has almost animosity towards Starfield out of sheer spite.

Your partners in crime however, that was truly the highlight of the game, each one had their own quirk about them and felt unique, unlike those you find in Skyrim where everyone feels copy/pasted. Thumbs down! Playing on control pad. Like seriously wtf? This is a great game. But this is a game that should be played on a PC. Do not play this game on a console. It is not remotely the same thing. It's a watered down console version. Also, any FPS shooter will be much much better using KBM controls. VATS or no VATS, Fallout is no exception. You should definitely not be using a control pad for this game. Control pads are basically good for platformers and fighting games. Definitely not for this. What a loser. And most definitely by all means, don't play this on a console. You should be investing in a decent PC if you're going to play this game or any similar high end game. And yes even though it came out 7 years ago, it's s till a resource intensive title. And you will never ever get the same experience on any console. In fact, stop buying consoles because it only gives devs more incentive to put focus on them due to being being so prevalent. Consoles fading out = more focus on actually developing the game. Without having to do anything extra for multiple consoles.
