Interestingly enough, Oda drew a color spread of Luffy Zoro and Nami in chapter 526. Zoro and Nami depicted as Yin and Yang (Green Dragon and Orange Tiger) with Luffy in the middle balancing them. A lot of meaning behind that color spread.

The Tiger being the actual apex predator in South and East Asia and the Dragon being the mythologic apex predator. I doubt Oda has China or India in mind when he uses the Dragon and Tiger along Zoro and Nami.

I think another thing to point out regarding this trio is the whole "is Zoro the first-mate or not" debate that often comes up. Something I always found was missing from that discussion is Nami's role as part of the leadership of the crew. When you actually look at what she does on the crew it very heavily resembles the actual duties of an actual first -mate on a sailing vessel(managing the cargo/supplies, taking charge of the crewdeck and assigning tasks, even navigation is usually a first-mate duty rather than a separate position). Hell, her whole gag of where if you're a member of the Straw Hats she can easily beat you up and order you around is kind of representative of just how much authority she has in the crew. In contrast, Zoro usually only acts first-mate-ish in crisis and combat scenarios, which obviously suit his skill-set over Nami's. I feel like there is no official first-mate because Zoro and Nami kind of divide the role amongst themselves since the "Golden Trio" ultimately represents the core leadership of the crew.

Given this, it also puts more emphasis on the Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island arcs with Zoro with Luffy in the former and Nami in the latter. In Dressrosa, Luffy showed off his strength while in Whole Cake he wore his heart on his sleeves, and they were what were used to achieve victory with Luffy using his strongest form against Doflamingo and displaying heart in his battle against Katakuri by connecting with the commander through his efforts and ideal. Oda really knows how to do themes and story structure, especially in the littlest of things. 😁

This is also super minor but interesting symbolism. Their main colors are green and orange vs. primary colors like red, blue and yellow. Maybe it's a coincidence, but after watching the vid I like to think that it represents that they are a blend of purpose, like mentioned. Spirit and strength, logic and heart. Thus why they are a secondary color resulting from a blend of primary colors, taking aspects from both.

Blackbeard is set up as the final villain getting nearly a thousand chapters of build up - and the only Straw Hats who have met him are Luffy, Zoro, and Nami (Jinbei too in Impel Down but before he was a crew member). The interaction between these characters was one of the most important scenes in One Piece for me - showing Luffy and Blackbeard as two sides of what freedom could be, with clever imagery such as meat vs dessert to show the path they take to their goal. In this scene too, you saw a stark contrast between Zoro and Nami's judgments - Zoro standing ground while Nami was insisting they fight back. I am sure that the dynamic between these four characters will be revisited when the Straw Hats re-encounter the Blackbeard Pirates. This was a beautiful analysis and captures the essence of One Piece.

Now that we’re in the final saga we’re going to see a “renaissance” of sorts with the straw hats. Pre-ts was them joining and establishing who they were which then allowed for post-ts to be focused more on the side characters, but now that we’re in the final saga the S-hats can shine again. That’s why we’re focusing on them more as we’re getting closer and closer to their personal goals and getting old character dynamics back like this. Oda already knows the ending and has known for years meaning he knows what every S-hat will be doing when the end comes even down to Jimbei as he was in the draft sketches before OP started. This video made me think of something: given this trio, how does Sanji fit in? Then I realized something: Sanji is Zoro and Nami combined. Think about it: he is strong and there are moments where he makes bold actions like Zoro. By the same token, he's also characterized by being human, especially kindness, and he had moments where he was emotionally intelligtent (think his speech to Usopp in EL). Given the above, it's no wonder Sanji was the only one to officially assume the role of captain (during the stretch of twirly hat pirates). 10:14- That's the difference between Luffy and Ace- the latter was praised to be the next successor through being guided by the top pirates while not having a firm enough rational head to control his impulses due to also being too larger than life to understand the subtler details- basically Ace was allowed to be impulsive with control and eventually it got him killed. Hopefully, Sabo doesn't follow suit in the opposite direction of being too logical, only to be blindsighted by something that goes against his logic to make him cornered. As he's surrounded by people who restrain their emotional impulses to the point they allow one member to turned into a robot while another was forced with a begotten child because their plan requires no impulse to ruin their carefully laid plans. I want to hear your genuine thoughts on the possibility of some sort of Oda style evolution of Nami and Luffy’s deep emotional connection and understanding of one another and close friendship turning into something slightly romantic end of series. Whether it’s just on Nami’s side or a Goku and Chi Chi style where Luffy doesn’t understand it 100%. He obviously knows what marriage and romance is as evidence in Return to Fish-Men Island when he says he won’t marry Hancock if that’s what she was asking, but that’s because it’s a funny trope that she is in love with him and he is not. Arlong Park first gave me this inclination of this when I first started watching and then a few moments in the Whole Cake Island, Skypiea and Water 7 Sagas gave me other inclinations something informal could be between them This video is a big part of why I see this and I think once they reach Laugh Tale Luffy will have a moment of thanks and appreciation for Nami that allowed him to complete the journey. Every well written love story has the foundation of a deep friendship and difficult/stressful moments strengthen that bond. I feel like whether or not some small spark between them is written by Oda, they have the most emotionally deep relationship between the straw hats since the beginning If people disagree I respect that, but if there is romantic pairings, this is the one that makes obvious sense to me. If there’s a big time skip EOS, Sanji reuniting with Pudding and getting that memory back is very fitting too (right now 16 is 😳)

Man so many people misunderstood that comment Zoro made regarding Luffy after VegaPunk death. Dude never said Luffy can’t cry or be sad, not sure where people are getting that from. His exact words were that “the death of an old man should not be Effecting Luffy This Much”. Luffy was so depressed that he wasn’t speaking to anyone, not eating his normal amount, and in effect failing to lead the crew. What Luffy did be the equivalent of, I don’t know if Shanks just gave up being a pirate cause he believed Dory and Brogy were dead after not seeing them for awhile when they were stuck on Little Garden fighting.

Nami and Zoro are yin and yang. Nami is yin, female, weak, intelligence, crafty, guidance, soft Zoro is yang, male, strength, instinct, straight forward, lost, hard Luffy is the enlightened man, with both yin and yang to balance him but also he is happy, wise (not intelligent), understanding, lives in the moment, unrelenting That said this is just meta of the storytelling, its not going to perdict futures of the characters.

I’d probably add Sanji just because he’s the left hand of Luffy and he’s the one other person other than Zoro that Luffy trusts to protect and lead the crew and Oda said once before that Sanji is the Heart of the crew so I’d say it’s more of a quadrinity that is the most important but I can see why you only talked about those 3.

Unless you skip every scene with Luffy and Sanji, every scene with Luffy and Bege, every scene with Luffy and Nami, every scene with Luffy and Jinbe, and every scene with Luffy’s and KATAKURI
