Sorry I haven't put out a good Analysis video in awhile, but I hope you all enjoy this one! I'd say the quality of content overall has been a little weak the last month or so, but this next month will only be good stuff, plus hopefully another Analysis vid by the end of October as well :) Marineford vid still in the works, but that won't be in October, sorry!

Quality > Quantity. Hopefully Matt Owens sees your vids, since i find these to be the hands down most insightfull and thorough vids on one piece. On another note, i think the character design, the look of a character, plays a big role in Oda's villains.

Would love to see you apply this analysis to Kaido, think he represents a villain who has become the very thing he hates. A wild beast who escaped imprisonment yet is obsessed with subjugation, the oppressed that became the oppressor. Heavily inspired by Japan’s own imperialist/industrialist turn in response to Western imperialism

@@outlawred5896 interesting perspective there. I also think Hody represents extreme xenophobia and nationalism which is something that every country has, but none so prevalent like with Japan and its history especially during and after World War 2.

Sterling Archer Hody = Killmonger. And yes I agree. What Oda is doing right now by explicitly contrasting the Sulong Minks with the Beast Pirates is really interesting thematically too. I haven’t figured out what it means exactly yet. Jack, himself a general of the animal kingdom pirates, gassing and torturing an actual independent animal kingdom might have symbolic significance in regards to the cannibalistic nature of imperialism. Maybe we find out more soon where Oda is going with this.

@JAMF huh? The incredible attention to detail here is that Lucci disguised himself as a civilian in Water 7 without raising any suspicions for 5 years. Then later turns out it was expressed in his fruit, Neko Neko no mi: Model - Leopard, an animal that is a master at camouflage. TBF tho, usually, One Piece fans are not easily impressed if a story/character/dialogues are not masterally crafted... at least not for me. That's why I am a fan of this series because as we've just witnessed here with Mr. Morj's great analyses of the series, I, like the rest of us here are still surprised that even as diehard fans of the series, there are still lots of instances where we missed out on details and information craftily put there by the author in order for us to discover. This connection of Lucci's undercover mission and his devil fruit was just one of the many things that almost always goes under the radar. And pointing it out in the open just sometimes blows everyone's mind. This is the reason why I love One Piece.

The fact that Blackbeard was fine with passing 40 years of his life being almost no one until he found what he was looking for makes him the most terrifying villain in one piece. He didn't chase fame and notoriety. They came for him. It gives him that subtle cosmic protection that Luffy has had throughout the series. A strong candidate for Pirate King.

Black Beard actually comments on this himself several times, that he can essentially always "bet on himself" because "luck", or rather "destiny" seems to always favor him. A great example of this is when he and his crew survive Magellan's attack because his fruit was able to swallow the poison without Black Beard fully absorbing it. Black Beard had no idea that this would happen and that he would survive that way, and he counted his "lucky stars" that it worked.

I like to think about Wapol being purposefully written as a bad, "forgettable" villain to spark a contrast with the "A man dies when he's forgotten" quote. Maybe that's a stretch but at the very least it's ironic. Drum Island is one of the few arcs when the villain is extremely bad in both power and personality, never a threat even for a split second. He literally got pushed away from the island. While the most memorable character, alongside Chopper and I guess Kureha, is Hirlock, the man who literally died. Everyone fondly remembers him, Chopper, Dalton, Kureha, the inhabitants and every single one of us.
@12thmocha11

nah, your on to something there. cause man, I always forget Wapol, but Hirlock is unforgettable for his speech and other factors. Perhaps it wasn't necessarily on purpose, but was or wasn't that just makes Oda's writing that much better that he could do that either unconsciously or consciously .

@@razkable Lucci is great because he rivals Luffy in determination. Most villains up to this point have been lazy, defeatist Buggy was content to be a big fish in a small pond, Don Krieg though he could use tools, gadgets and numbers to shortcut his way to success, Crocodile and Moriah gave up and returned to paradise, Foxy cheats, Hody uses drugs, Wapol and Spandam were cowards etc. Lucci was the first to have a real work ethic and fighting spirit which matters in a story about will power and an arc about martial arts.

Oda makes villains completely unsympathetic and cruel by displaying the consequences and suffering that their evil deeds entail. It follows the Ancient Greek theater philosophy of building an injustice throughout the play and then leading to the final catharsis act where justice is served and the audience feels good about that.

Yoooo, I can't remember if I talked about it to you, or just others, but did we ever have a conversation a while back where I mentioned that point that Luffy contrasts every villain? I've been saying that for ages and I think we might have discussed it at one point. If you did hear it from me, I definitely don't mind it making its way into this video - especially as you've taken the idea way further than I ever realized it (you realized a lot more nuance to Arlong than I did, and I never thought about it as much for the post-EB villains). I really love the point that the villains aren't meant to be someone you can agree with or live in a moral gray area. That they're complex but thoroughly despicable is perfect for the kind of story One Piece is. I think this works with the contrast they all have with Luffy show the variety of ways that people can end up falling from who they could have been, because their wills were too weak. Luffy has a strong enough will that he can maintain the simple, innocent morals he does, whereas so many other people were too weak, and end up taking the easy way out. To try to lazily gain power like Moria, to try to force others into his crew like Kaido, to be ashamed of their identity as a pirate like Kuro, to just go along with a philosophy because it lets you kill like Lucci instead of thinking for yourself, et cetera. I see them as people who could have been as great as Luffy if their will was strong enough to not fall for all those forms of weakness.

It's great to see how great ideas and perspectives come into light. The topic of the video was 'Bruuuuuhhhh 🔥🔥🔥' moment for me. But the video wasn't all .. the ideas and perspectives provided by the comment section even added more to the video. I can't type it all... But the comment section gave even more nuances and perspectives that expands the ideas in the video. I do want to add another thing here. Some ideas and thoughts come into minds of many people independently. One just can't claim the origin of the thought to themselves. The more abundant the thinkers are the more likely that some thinkers might come up with same idea simultaneously. In One Piece world. .... it is more common to come up with a theory that is already been in circulation. Nonetheless... This all is why I love One Piece fandom. Be it content creators... Or the commenters .... Or the general fan discussions in the deepest or farthest of places... It's always lively and always so engaging. One Piece is truly a living Masterpiece 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Honestly its amazing how many connections that can be made so easily from the analysis. I cant tell if Oda actually intended to have written these characters this way or not, but its definitely apparent how well put together everything is at such a deep level. Honestly insane how many similarities, contrasts, dualities, and consistencies youve made in this video that emphasizes how well written the one piece story is.

This is why I don’t find “Luffy doesn’t develop as a character” to be a valid criticism of the story. Just because Luffy carries the exact same beliefs, desires, and demeanor from chapter 1 all the way into chapter 1,000 doesn’t mean that he’s not everlastingly complex and interesting in those traits. A good villain can add a tremendous layer of depth to a relatively “simple” character by simply highlighting what they are not. It’s one thing to have Luffy say he would do anything for his crew. It’s another to test Luffy’s ability to do anything for his crew in an arc where Spandam, a weak leader who lets his crew do all the heavy lifting, is the main villain. Even though Luffy’s character to this day is the relatively the same as in chapter 1, it feels like we find out something new about him almost every arc because of Oda’s excellent villains and his storytelling prowess as a whole.

Luffy doesn't react, he acts and the world reacts. The world doesn't change Luffy, he changes the world, by the end of the story he will change it literally. I think writing a character like this and actually make it work is much more complicated and difficult than it seems.

I think when people are comparing villains from different series, they often leave out the authors aim and direction and also the nature of the series out of it. Example Dragon Ball does not have deep villains by any means. Most deep were Vegeta, a bad guy turned good and Zamasu, who liked to flex philosophically. But villains in Dragon Ball are perfect as they are for the series like Dragon Ball. Dragon Ball did not need morally gray villains, because Toriyamas goal was never to write story that complex. That is not to say Dragon Ball is bad. I love Dragon Ball. Toriyama just wanted to write a story week by week where you got your adrenaline kicks from that weeks chapter by action and powerscaling. That's why a character like Frieza is a great villain for Dragon Ball where for example Stain is great villain for My Hero Academia. They show authors means and goals for the story. I enjoy them both for different reasons.

Outside of proclaiming that he will be the pirate king which is just his goal, luffy doesn't think all that highly of himself. He knows his limits, he knows he has to rely on others and he doesn't act like a higher than thou figure, unlike Enel's god play

When I watched it I realised that doffy was basically just trying to portray why he is the way he is.he isnt sympathetic hes waaay too far gone and is set on his goals which obstructs luffys. And that's that. But idk I guess some people interpret it different due to their reading experience. Eh

Even the "bad" ones like Moria, Hody or Foxy have a reason to be how they are, and I think that all of them fit perfectly for what the story needs them to be. You have it backwards. One Piece is an elucidation of the Platonic Good. I.e. Oda has a nuanced vision for how an ideal society functions, and each arc/villain represents a different way that everything can go horribly wrong. The themes are primary, the personalities/backstories are subservient.

Great video but the part about ability congruence does not make any sense if you think about it, since devil fruits are an "external" power you gain from consuming them. It does not make any sense for a every character to have a perfect match with their ability and personality. Haki on the other hand does because it's a internal power, it makes sense if they congruence. The world of One piece should be full of characters with devil fruits with no compatibility with their personality. So far the Beast pirates all-stars are the only ones i can think of since Queen seems to be a guy who favors weapons and gadgets but he has a Brachiosaurus devil fruit, so he got no compatibility with his devil fruit unless he fights like a Dino-rider dinosaur. King also got a bad devil fruit since he can already fly he get a flying devil fruit?

11:10 That's because the context in which Oda wrote the story is perfunctory but succesfully apparently grey. You've got the protagonist who's a pirate (a supposed type of criminal who takes to the seas) and then you've got the World Government and its armed forces (the marine) who are supposed to be the good guys. I think it's clear why Oda needs to remark each characters actions to make them clearly good or evil people. Sure you'll get those that are ambiguous/neutral like Law or Mihawk but even then they pale in comparison with someone like Sakazuki, they actually (AFAIK) have never committed genocide like he has. Overall Luffy is one of those "pirates who don't do anything" type of hero while villains like Akainu/Sakazuki are Knights Templar who've been manipulated by someone above them (Im) and are unable to distinguish the true right from wrong because the World Government has hidden the truth and so they commit attrocities that only pure evil villains do.

Love your take on all of this, but I do disagree with some points about Doflamingo. While he and Corazon might have endured the same trauma, most people always seem to forget that while Corazon was able to heal from it because he was taken in by Sengoku, Doflamingo wasn't so lucky. He certainly always was more keen to become a psychopath, but Oda makes sure to show the reader that Doflamingo is in fact no heartless monster or "born evil", because that is a thing that neither exists in real life, nor in the world of One Piece. I believe that if he didn't fall into the hands of Trebol as a kid and had a chance to process his trauma like Corazon did, he wouldn't have become the Doflamingo we know today. His way of dealing with trauma is by surrounding himself with a fake family, taking in helpless children and punishing those who dare destroy this ideal bubble he's living in. In my opinion, Doflamingo is probably one of the most tragic characters in One Piece if you pay close attention, and I do think it's pretty easy to sympathize with him. Not particularly with his actions, but with his sheer overwhelming emotions that are behind everything he does. For me, while it was definitely satisfying when Luffy punched him out of the sky, I also felt really bad for Doflamingo and I've never quite experienced this with any other villain in the series. I feel like while Doffy is a really popular character, people never seem to bother to actually analyze him fully. They just acknowledge that he's more complex than others, but that's it. I'd love to see a full analysis of him one day, because his arc is so full of amazing symbolism and cinematography, it could probably fill an hour long video.

One piece villains are complete bad guys only within their personnal narrative arcs where they are the main antagonist; most of them get to continue living on their lives as a part of a wider world (Ener's trip to the moon and back) and become fully realised characters on their own merit (Buggy the Pirate King, post Impel Down Crocodile, Mr3) you can cheer them on and some even get to become the heroe's allies. That is another thing that makes them better villains imo.

Finally, more people appreciating a classically evil villain. Having sympathetic villains like the ones in Naruto is fine and all, but not every villain needs to be sympathetic to be a great villain. Acnologia from Fairy Tail is a perfect example. I'll admit that Acnologia was my favorite villain in almost the entirety of the series since he was introduced. Acnologia was a powerful, cruel, unstoppable force to be reckoned with. Everyone in the series was scared of him, and I loved how this one character's introduction could make everyone present in the story crap their pants. And he didn't even have a backstory. He didn't need one. He was perfect the way he was. And then Hiro Mashima decided to make a last-minute backstory for Acnologia that just really didn't fit him, simply to make him a little sympathetic. Acnologia hates dragons because of their destructive nature and then decides to be like them in return? It's like Hiro gave up at the end, decided to give Acnologia a sympathetic backstory just to wrap things up, and because he thought it would make the story better. It didn't. Basically, for me, Acnologia was a more serious and crazy version of Kaido, and Hiro ruined him. And I'm so glad that Hiro Mashima doesn't own Kaido. Because if he did, I would be scared that he would give Kaido a crappy, sappy, generic backstory, and just overall ruin him like he did Acnologia.

While big mom go out of her way to make "alliances" with other races and kingdons, alliances that are hollow and basicaly just for show. Her counterpart is Luffy that make friends and allies in his path, without having any bigger reason or making it an objective, and thar why he has so mutch diversity in his crew as said by big mom herself in the later chapters

That was an excellent analysis you've made. I'd also extend this to Akainu. He's an Admiral that's supposed to represent justice yet he's so cruel in the way he treats people and what he did to Ace. I am looking forward to when Luffy beats the shit out of him. Also, one thing to note is that Oda has expressed why Luffy never kills his opponents because he wants Luffy's wins to represent that his ideology triumphs over his opponents.
