Thats a good question that doesn't have a clear answer. I know folks that were born in the city limits, yet have zero involvement with their community and at the same time there are others who moved here decades ago that are extremely passionate about the area. The latter I would consider more of a local than the prior. I don't subscribe to the idea that you get a "local badge" at birth that would restrict others, who simply were born elsewhere, to have no right to utilize the label once established in a community.

Native Carolinian here! When I was a kid in the 60's, we NEVER stayed in M.B. The family always rented a house on the Ocean in Holden Beach, NC. At that time, Holden Beach was not crowded, my Dad fished in the surf, Mom relaxed in a chair and my two younger brothers and me played in the waves and the sand. It was our playground for a week. No pool, no Pavilion, few people other than our neighbors. We bought food to prepare at the beach house (full kitchen), except one evening we'd eat seafood in Calabash at a restaurant. So it is no wonder I do not like Myrtle Beach. The crowds, lack of parking and standing in lines do not appeal to me. I don't have to travel far from home to stand in a line (WalMart). In fact, we now have family that leases property at M.B. KOA. We could stay at no cost but choose not to. It's a waste of time... and this leaves little time to RELAX. And M.B. has a high crime rate. In the past you may hear fireworks going 'bang'. Now it's gunfire. M.B. was developed to generate money for the wealthy land owners. Crime always follows money. No place for this ol' Carolina Boy. The Smokey Mountains are also crowded these days. My Maternal Grandmother grew up near Franklin, NC. It was a peaceful place many years ago. Grandma used to speak of 'Florida People' buying up old homesteads in the mountains. Other locals called them 'Yankees' or 'Carpetbaggers'. Whatever you called them, they soon bought up the majority of the land, pushing up Real Estate prices, and preventing future generations of natives from finding affordable housing. Now 'Big Pharma' preys on the ones who remain. The rest and relaxation (and pure fun) I remember as a child are gone from the beaches and mountains of the Carolinas. That, coupled with the risk associated with being in public among the unvaccinated, obliges me to remain home on my one acre of land. Here I control the risk as much as I can, considering I do have a medical condition that includes a high risk of being infected by COVID-19. I rest my case. If fun to you means crowds, crime and lines, by all means partake. The Best of Luck to All!

That way they don’t have to deal with the traffic or noise.

If you read the comments from most locals, you would realize that we don't have any issues with tourists who come here and act respectfully towards us and our city. If people treated this like their home and acted the way that they would expect people who visited their city to act, there wouldn't be any problems. Resort towns all over the world still have people who live in them. Deal with that fact. From Anaheim to San Antonio to New Orleans to Hilton Head... Why do you think that the residents of Myrtle Beach deserve less respect from visitors than these other places?

The lack of physical history here is pretty sad. I've been working on local history projects for the last several years for this area and most of what I do comes from pictures. There are plenty of pictures of what Myrtle Beach used to look like but a huge part of doing history is visiting historic places to better understand the story. While it is amazing to see the progress just in the last 20 years or so, I wish some of those major landmarks were still around to see. The Ocean Forest Hotel is one example that comes to mind.

TheOnlyChuck95 Try on a online auction site I can’t say the name rhymes with hay for post cards of the area. The Rice Planters restaurant that was around 68th north and Kings had the tables set for years. Employees left one night came to work next day and locked and chained. Quite a number of business owners do that. They move out in the middle of the night. You go to unemployment or file your taxes and find that the money was never paid in. I worked for 1 with a gambling addiction who took over $6,800 of taxes out never paid them in. Then sued me for having the IRS investigate and order him to pay still waiting 14 years later for the money. The court never served me notice so he won by default, for $2,000. That’s how crooked the magistrate system is here. Check on history of the HCPD & why they’re still around. The only one in the state, starts with Charlie’s Place on the hill. Magistrates until 25 years ago only needed an 8th grade education. Some in the state are grandfathered in. I’ve been offered magistrates position several times since I have a degree and law experience, magistrates in Horry County are a private corporate entity appointed by the state. I have been called scum but not low enough to be one of them. We have magistrates that also are city/town judges. Anywhere else this would be dual office holding and a ethical and criminal violation. The old Ocean Forest was beautiful even till the day they started to auction. My family purchased a lot of memorabilia from it for rentals we owned. Since then we’ve sold the property but the memory lives on.

My comment may be a little off-center, but I believe it would apply here, I was born in 1955 in Canton, Ohio (Football Hall of Fame) town. I can totally relate to the frustrations of living in a City/town where there are annual activities that draws endless numbers of non-locales, I lived most of my Life in one of those places. When I was a child, Canton was Post-war little America and just a wonderful place to grow up and to raise a family in this "working-class" town. Like Myrtle Beach, Canton has changed beyond words, unemployment, drugs and a general decaying that marches on, and 14 known Gangs operating freely (according to Canton Police Dept.). I would not recommend relocation to Canton to anyone for any reason! It is a sad story about my hometown that I once loved. I have been to Myrtle Beach back in 1984, I really liked the town and I was very respectful to the locales there, after all, it is their town and I was a guest..........

There are numerous "tourist destinations" around this country and the world that know how to manage the seasonal influx and still maintain the quality of life for the residents that they deserve. I got about halfway through this gripefest and stopped. WAAAAAAAY too much whining for me, and most of it is total BS. Myrtle Beach is a RESORT TOWN, a TOURIST TOWN, and whether you like to admit it or not, if not for the TOURISTS Myrtle Beach would not exist. When my wife and I decided to move to South Carolina we took a look at several places where she wanted to live; two of them were Charleston and Myrtle Beach. Now, being from the South myself (Richmond, Virginia) and my wife being a Yankee (New Jersey) I knew that those two cites were resort towns which meant tourists and traffic jams and long lines and waiting and all of the aggravating stuff that comes with life in a tourist town, so I put the brakes on the idea of moving to either one of them. The LAST place I would EVER want to live is a resort town or a tourist town, which is why as much as I dearly love Virginia Beach I would NEVER live there. I understand (as much as I can, I think) the frustrations of seeing your nice, quiet little hometown grow and develop into a crowded (but thriving and economically prosperous - hate those Yankee tourists but LOVE those Yankee dollars) tourist town, but the solution is simple: MOVE. Either move or ADAPT and STOP WHINING because you ain't gonna change what's going on with Myrtle Beach. The people that are in charge are in it for those Yankee dollars, and they're gonna do whatever they need to do in order to get more of them. So either adapt or move. Simple as that.

We always went to beaches a little further north when I was growing up, Ocean Isle and Holden Beach in NC. Back then there wasn’t any retail culture or entertainment culture there and we went to the beach simply to go to the beach. We entertained ourselves by playing in the ocean, building sandcastles, collecting shells and repeating it all the next day for a whole week. We did take one day to visit Old Brunswick and another to visit the USS North Carolina in Wilmington. I didn’t start going to Myrtle Beach until a couple of years ago. It’s very much like Pigeon Forge, TN, which is only an hour away from where I live in NC. Cherokee NC is only 13 miles away as is the Great Smoky Mtn National Park, so we get a lot of tourists up here, too. I much prefer the quieter beaches to Myrtle Beach, but they’ve gotten so expensive we can’t afford them. But Myrtle Beach and Holden Beach do have something in common, a sandy beach and waves lapping on the shore. Who needs all the distraction when we have that beautiful, mesmerizing ocean staring us in the face?

Its the American way. We are like Locusts, we devour everything in sight and leave behind stripped out carouses. Most of us northerners are looking for somewhere that resembles the old neighborhoods or beach towns that we lived at or visited when we were kids. We have to keep moving further south to find it, except we bring our stupid baggage with us, no one wants to assimilate to their new surroundings. I have been coming to Myrtle Beach for 17yrs, I wanted to move there since 2006. Hasn't happened yet, but a man can dream, I would like to live further north at Loris or Cherry grove. Its a cool place to visit but not to sure I want to live there full time now. Word of advice to my Northern neighbors, stop complaining at the super market, the lunch meat is cut thick, employees move at a normal pace not a new york minute.

I live in Carolina Forest so I don't live right in Myrtle itself but I deal with 501 everyday of my life. I don't mind festivals and actually attend CCMF every year. I actually appreciate they come and bring the tourists along with the money. Before living here I lived in an incredibly poor city in Maryland. Nothing new happened there nothing fun nothing came. If we can get more money to the area with a festival I wont complain. I feel everyone talks about the crime but I honestly think the crime looks so bad because more is reported thanks to social media.

Living on the west side of the waterway would suck. I live 2 miles from the ocean, and that's pretty cool. I avoid 501 like the plague. 17 bypass as well. 31, 22, and since they widened it, 707 roll nicely. As a local, you get to know the shortcuts, and ways around most traffic jams. 544 is a nice alternative to 501. 22, to 31, although a longer ride is the best way to avoid 501 from Aynor to the beach area.

I live in Chicago the third largest US city and I rarely have issues with tourism. I think mega metropolises are designed to have corporate tourism while history and culture is preserved. A small city with 40’000 people doesn’t have the same historical foundation so it is much easier to destroy. I can’t think of one touristy small town which hasn’t been badly hurt by corporate tourism.

Sorry you feel that way. As a Pennsylvania native, disabled Veteran, and will be a one-time-only-week vacationer to Myrtle Beach toward the end of this summer, I'll be sure to keep these quirks in mind. 9/10 times I WOULD ask "are you from here" in conversation, and it's mainly to see if the person could help guide me to a certain place because after all, im not FROM there and I would think it's common courtesy. Google search can only do so much after all. As far as the natives/locals not liking/had their fill of the festival's, well, you know it's a tourist spot. Talk/complain to your city council. I hope THAT'S not taken out on those that are "visiting" Myrtle Beach. But in hindsight, I'll plan on giving full respect. As long as that respect is reciprocated. That's basically what it boils down to in the end.

I agree with "classic" Myrtle disappearing. But... In my town the industry is the military and industrial labor. Everyone you encounter is tired or just living here until they're living elsewhere. We have standstill traffic. All of our roads have potholes and things are generally decrepit; because we don't have a multi-month tourist tax base. Ironically, I'd like to live in Myrtle not just for the beach, but *because* your town IS based on tourism. People *want* to be there. Generally they're happy and in a friendly mood. Different blends of different people. And even people working there - you're generally working in the tourist business, which while still work isn't quite as dour on a daily basis as top secret national security, or barely getting by in an industrial wasteland. The cashier at the Zippy Mart is never going to say here "dude, I can't wait to clock out and go down to the beach".... You know?

I actually live in Socastee, but spent 6 years right in Myrtle Beach. Two things I have to agree with you on: the locals get absolutely crapped on and walked over for that almighty tourist dollar, and the total lack of regard for history. I'm surprised you didn't bring up the tearing down of the Pavillion, followed by the total failure of Hard Rock Park as it's replacement. The owners of Family Kingdom have laughed all the way to the bank now for 13 years following that bonehead decision!

Myrtle Beach is fine as long as you know where to go, Or where not to go. I’ve been going down for over 30 years playing golf for at least one week. I’m originally from Kentucky and my daughter went to school at coastal Carolina. When she was here at school my wife and I bought a condominium in the Carolina Forest area. Been spending probably 8 to 10 weeks here each year since 2007. Of course our grandkids are here now and that’s a big reason we come down so often. I’ve watched the place grow and change particularly over the last 15 years. The golf is great the restaurants are good and affordable and the beach is beautiful if you know where to go to avoid the crowds. We love it!

We vacationed at MB for years. My wife came as a young girl and teenager and her parents always stayed at the Chesterfield Inn. Very sad that they tore that down. In January of this year we moved down here from Virginia. We bought a house away from the beach on Hwy 90 between Conway and North Myrtle Beach. Our subdivision is quiet with great neighbors. We wanted a storm buffer and a traffic buffer but still wanted all the attractions the area offers. We shoot down the International Blvd and have the beach area in just about 8 to 10 minutes. It's the best of both with a nice subdivision and the beach nearby. The traffic on hwy 90 is getting worse with all the subdivisions being built here but it is still better than the beach side for traffic. We enjoy our new retirement home and the conservative state of SC.

Growing up our family vacation was at Myrtle Beach every year, we always looked forward to it and had a great time. Some of our best memories were at the Pavilion and the Pavilion Amusement Park across the street. We weren’t able to go for several years and I didn’t hear about the destruction of the Pavilion and Amusement Park until the year after it was torn down.......I was heartbroken. We were just there last month and it still breaks my heart when I remember the fun we had there and now they are basically empty lots. I always have the same question - what possessed them to make the decision to tear it down, what seemed liked a good idea to destroy not only something that seemed, to me at least, to bring in the necessary income but had significant historical value. I loved it when we were able to bring our three year old son to the beach for the first time and share with him things that I had done as a child on vacation there. I was excited to take him to the Pavilion and Amusement Park. I wish they would rebuild and recreate it. I also miss The Chesterfield House. Besides always being saddened by the empty lots that were once my favorite places I am thankful that there is still a little history left - that the Gay Dolphin is still there, no visit is complete without going there, and the baseball pinball games, I love playing those, and Peaches Corner. I know some of the Pavilion Amusement Park rides are at Broadway at the Beach but it’s not the same. I still love Myrtle Beach and I will always miss the Pavilion and Amusement Park.
@gcs88894 жыл бұрын
The original intention of the Pavilion being torn down I remember was to build condos. It was approved because the City of MB saw more money being brought in by their tourism tax on renting those units plus property tax than just having the Pavilion there. What a shame, as it really was the defining part of town being there.

GC S This happens everywhere when historic things get shut down and sold off to be torn down. Not just Myrtle Beach. That said however, it really doesn’t make the situation any less sad. We unfortunately live in a world where money takes over people’s minds. We have greedily stubborn landowners booting out good historic businesses so they can turn in a far bigger profit. I mean look at all the Drive Ins that have been torn down and raised since the 1980’s for example. Yes, the movie landscape (and not to mention the Real Estate and technology) has changed, but there’s still plenty of people even now that check out drive ins near them, only for the landlord to shut them down (if the owner running it don’t own it already) by either forbidding them from operating once their lease runs out so they can look at their plans to raise it or sell it to someone who will ultimately do just that (like the Cascade in Chicago) or let them continue until it’s sold (like the Columbia Drive In in Lancaster Pa in 2005). What can you do? It’s the world we live in. Just enjoy the memories you have. Nothing last forever.

I live in Surfside Beach, and every year it gets worse with traffic. Area is becoming over populated with all these houses and extra traffic. The layout for each town roads are not working anymore. More red lights going up for the new development causing traffic jams on roads made to keep traffic flowing. History being torn down for something new that don't stay open . Historic places need to be kept to show people who come here how thing was around here in the day. But all you see are empty rundown shabby buildings that has no history. Way to go Burroughs and Chapin for being so money hungry and owning most of the land, I know you help build this area but good gosh don't forget history. Sorry this get me so mad. I totally agree with your assessment. I am not a local. However, my town is working on being a tourist town. We have condos on top of condos. Neighborhoods are be destroyed by investors wanting to buy our homes. Destroying schools, churches, recreation and family in general. There are no kids in my neighborhood but two schools and these kids must travel to get there. We had noise ordinances but it’s in discussion to change the 10pm time where tourists can enjoy themselves. We still have to go to work and continue day to day. When I come to your town, I make sure to be respectful. We go shopping enjoy the beach and recreation but at 10 pm we make sure to be at our hotel where it’s not near a community. I do understand your pain. Two houses near me rented by students who sit chairs on the roof enjoying their loud music smoking their drugs. No check consideration for anyone in the neighborhood therefore I have no consideration for them. I do contact law enforcement that I pay through taxes to do their job. I think in another 5 years our town will be like yours.

As a vacationer, I miss a lot of my childhood nostalgia that has been torn down and replaced. When I think of the fun I used to have as a kid at the Myrtle Beach Grand Prix, Water Boggin water slides, The Pavilion, Maze Mania in Garden City, Magic Mountain water slides, and my favorite arcade in Surfside....it is a bit sad and depressing. About the only thing left now is Wild Water and Wheels. Now when I visit, I most look forward to hitting restaurants that are either specific to the Grand Strand, or chains that we simply do not have in upstate NY. Living near Watkins Glen International, it gets crazy a couple times a year, especially NASCAR weekend. However, I can't imagine going through what you go through for 6 months straight. I try to be respectful while I am there, but younger people just want to party and don't give a dang about locals. They get in that mentality of "Hey, I'm here to blow off some steam and nobody is going to stop my fun!" The older you get, the more you mature and consider other people's feelings. I guess that is why I have always preferred Surfside (the family beach). A quieter area with a short drive to anything you could possibly want to do or see.

I really need a local to answer this. Why does everything in MB close so early? Basically all the shops and restaurants close between 9-11, why? Back home (Toronto) many places are 24 hours or at less open until 2am. Even other US cities I’ve been to (LA, Vegas, Chicago, etc) have places that close at normal time (12-2 or 24hrs). Is there a reason for early closing times?
@WHSAAadmin3 жыл бұрын
The shops and restaurants close early so their workers can spend some time in the bars before they close. Working around tourists can drive a person to drink. Seriously, there are several factors, and while all don't apply in every case, some do. First, there is the reality that a lot of the service workers have more than one job and need to get home so they can get enough sleep to get to their day job the next morning. Then, there is a higher risk for a worker to be a victim of a violent crime if they are out much after midnight, just like the tourists. Depending upon the location and the time of year, they may close early so that they can turn their lights off during turtle nesting season.

Living in a resort town, or tourist city, this is just expected. Not every single person is going to be satisfied. Locals suffer at the hand of tourists, but what would the town be without that revenue? The beaches wouldn’t be patrolled or groomed, the roads would be far worse than they are, there wouldn’t be nearly as many options for shopping or dining, etc. It’s a give and take whether you’re a tourist town or not. I’m not saying it’s not annoying as fuck dealing with people who have no regard for others, but they’re likely paying A LOT more in lodging just to be here. Which means the city can monetize things that NORMAL cities have to get grants, or hold fundraisers for. Again, it’s give and take. If you moved to a city that didn’t have a beautiful ocean, there would still people ruining it for you. That’s humanity. lol Also, people expect ‘history’ within mile of the beach. Anything that takes a drive to get to isn’t part of their vacation. That should really take precedence over pirate dinner theater, but a tourist wouldn’t know that if the city didn’t push tourist attractions over history. But again, revenue over history to keep the city alive.

Why doesn’t Myrtle Beach have a major interstate hwy coming from 95 ?

I don't knew if this is a Myrtle Beach issue, but drivers around here absolutely suck. Going well under the speed limit, blowing through lights after the turn red and just committing dangerous/unlawful acts.

I can sympathize with the locals living there being from the NC mountains. During the summer and fall tourist flow in from everywhere and it makes it hard to do almost anything. The traffic, the crowded restaurants and the crowds in general just get annoying. We don't usually ask where they are from however because its easy to see that they aren't from here lol.

My grandparents lived in Murrell’s Inlet, they didn’t like Bike Week or Spring Break because of the traffic. I’m from Pittsburgh, we always have traffic. But I definitely get it, you are just trying to get home from work or go to the grocery store and have to face that traffic and crowds. I wouldn’t like it either.
