HINT: soaking the bleached shirt in hydrogen peroxide will stop the bleach. Keeping the shirt dry as possible before bleaching with keep the design crisper. A wet shirt allows the bleach to spread, making the design less define.

At the restaurant where I work, many of us like to wear the red version of our uniform shirt on Fridays. Steven, the kindest elder you'd ever meet, accidentally spilled bleach on his, creating an almost tie-dye effect, but he wore it just the same. Well, he passed away this last Monday. To honor him, we're all tie-dye bleaching our red shirts to wear on Fridays. Just finished soaking my red shirt in bleach, and it's currently in the wash as I type this, but I'm sure it will come out looking great.

I really hated the color and wanted to make it lighter in a cool way so I wanted to tie dye it with stuff around the house (I only had one day to do it) and it worked terrifically (even my parents were impressed with the results)! I got a lot of complements on my shirt that day and I'm no artist so it ment a lot! I actually liked wearing my shirt that day

Did this with a black long sleeve, dyed it just like that, washed it out, and didn't wash it, just set it up to dry. It was orange/black at first, and then I washed it once dry. Turned two different shades of grey but it happens to be my FAVORITE shirt now. About to give it another go myself.

I'm trying a bleach dye (using Clorox gel toilet bowl cleaner with bleach!) on a dark blue shirt this weekend, and am probably neutralizing with 10 to 1 hydrogen peroxide (water to H2O2) solution. Will see how it goes, but I tested on a scrap of similar fabric, and it makes it kind of a cool, rust orange!

I used to have a t-shirt shop back in the 90s. There was a thing called discharge ink, which basically bleached the color out of dark shirts as part of the ink. It was my understanding that it didn't work on all shirts because different types of dye might be used. And sometimes they would dye unpopular or experimental colors of shirts black, and sell them as black shirts. And when they did this, they used dyes that were bleach resistant, because they were cheaper. not sure if that's what happened to you, tho. Hope the info helps.

If you dilute the bleach and don't leave it on long you should be fine, I have made a few, and my family has as well and no one got any holes, however I would feel terrible if my advice ruined a nice shirt. Practice on a stained shirt

Not to discredit the poster in this video but this project may be good for just a quick little project and that's it. If you want good results you have to put in the time and use the proper materials and bleach regardless of how diluted it is isn't one of them. It will not take long before the shirt starts coming a part after several washes. That is just the effect bleach has on colored fabrics. Rit dyes are junk as well as dyes used in store bought tie dying kits. That being said, do you ever wonder why quality tie dyes are rather spendy? Most people doing them have years of experimenting and honing their skillset to make the beautiful patterns you see. They use high quality dyes that are not cheap. But they are very vibrant and using the right process, they don't wash out. The fabric will wear out before the colors lose much of their vibrancy. Bottom line, use crap materials, get crap results. Again, I am not bashing the poster here.....this may be a great way to do a project that doesn't matter a lot or to cover an accident from bleach use.

My friend did it and her shirt bleached to a gray color instead of orange. I wish I knew the answer, bleach is usually strong enough to affect dark fabric. Maybe try a test and don't dilute the bleach with water

If the fabric has a high acrylic content it wont bleach as well! Go for cotton fabric

I had this same issue, so I grabbed another shirt thinking it was the fabric blend. Turned out, I was using regular bleach. When I grabbed a bottle of concentrated bleach it worked just like in the video. Hope this helps anyone looking to do this.
