Neat stuff Mr. Pete. I went to a flea market last week and found a Mitutoyo 0-1" micrometer in really good shape, but it was frozen up rock solid. I got it for a whopping "two-bucks" so I took it apart and put it in my ultra-sonic cleaner for a couple of days, but it still wouldn't budge. Next, I mixed up acetone and brake fluid (50/50) and put the micrometer in a glass bowl and sit it on the dashboard of my spare vehicle for a couple of days. With the high temps we've recently had in the Mid-West my concoction got really hot and unfroze the micrometer. After a clean-up and slight adjustment, I now have a really nice micrometer for $2 bucks and a little "elbow grease." Your project (a few bucks and some "elbow-grease") reminded me of my recent project.

Lyle, if it hasn't been said already, soaking items in Evaporust if it doesn't completed cover the item can cause a permanent line on the iron. Most people believe it has to do with the water evaporating out at the boundary between the liquid and the air and creating a zone where accelerated micro-rusting can occur. Then the Evaporust will dissolve the rust, evaporate, and re-rust over and over again. A handy trick when the Evaporust is just below the top of the item is to drap Saran wrap or cling wrap plastic over the item and make sure that all the air is squeezed out.... Jim

@@ypaulbrown I bought a tub with a lid big enough for the pipe wrench to lay flat. Longest I did was 18".poured in 1 gallon of vinegar and eyeballed how much Evaporust to pour in. Left parts to soak 3 days at least. Took them out each day and scrubbed with a stainless steel scratch brush. Like Pete did rinsed off in water and went over with 180 or 220 emery. Used Rustoleum rusty metal primer and color of choice. Your mileage may vary ,good luck and thanks for asking.AL B in Ohio.

@@sallybrokaw6124 just a note, Rusty Metal Primer has fish oil in it. it will not cure properly if used on metal that has no rust, so the top coat will suffer...I set up a 5 gallon bucket with white vinegar and got great results with no Evaporust....I find the Evaporust does not last very long.....I then soak in water and baking soda, 1 lb per gallon to neutralize the vinegar.....the vinegar is a lot stronger than I would have imagined, left a wire brush in and 2 days later the wire was gone......best wishes from Florida, Paul .

I've found extra strong vinegar, 15% commercial grade or 8% cleaning grade works well on rust and shale, just takes time and an otherwise clean/non oily work piece. 8% Cleaning vinegar takes about 48 hours to remove mill scale from hot rolled steel and leaves a satin finish. Bear in mind as the chemical process proceeds, the acid is weakened. So, if you soak the material in a large enough tub of vinegar or change the vinegar as it weakens the two day or less process is achievable. If you can get the commercial grade, used for making mayo and such, times cut in half.

The problem with vinegar is that it WILL eat the base metal if left in too long. Some people add salt, which speeds up the reaction. I use it, but only on non-precision items. A few years back I bought some white vinegar from an asian market, and it was not the 5% we know and love! It was at least 15%, as thinning with water still made it too strong for normal food use. I eventually dumped it into my jug of de-rusting vinegar.

Wonderful monarch lathes with all bells n whistles. Been awhile since I was on manual machines so your videos where able to refresh my memory. In a local chemical plant you may heard of there are lots of oddball parts so it has been a learning experience 👍 Keep up the great work my friend!
