"Down by the River" is a song composed by Neil Young. It was first released on his 1969 album with Crazy Horse, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Young explained the context of story when introducing it in New Orleans on September 27, 1984. It depicts a man who catches his woman cheating on him, then meets her down by the river and shoots her. A few hours later the sheriff comes to his house and arrests him.[1] In the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album Decade, Young states that he wrote "Down by the River" and "Cowgirl in the Sand" while passed out in bed in Topanga Canyon.

Big Sur Folk Festival, 1969! The ever-beautiful Joan Baez in orange robe dancing with Dorothy Combs Morrison 0:32 - 0:38. The other woman in orange is Baez's sister Mimi Farina. Joni Mitchell, John Sebastian, the Combs Sisters (gospel group) and the Flying Burrito Bros. also performed at the festival. Filmed Sept. 13-14, 1969 at Big Sur, just a month after Woodstock and two months after Easy Rider was released; the counter-culture is riding high two months before Altamont, and the beautiful people of the Hollywood hippie set are on hand, mingling with the queens of the Bay Area folk scene. The tall guy with the bushy hair in the grey-green suit jacket tapping the tambourine is Bert Schneider of Raybert Productions (The Monkees, Easy Rider; Hearts and Minds). On bass is Greg Reeves. The drummer is Dallas Taylor. Where Neil Young and Crazy Horse versions of "Down by the River" laid into the groove to create a funky atmospheric space rock, the CSN&Y versions are marked (in addition to the great singing) by "the jam" instigated by Taylor on drums. Man, David Crosby sure is having a good time -- and Bert really gets into it on tambourine. "It ain't paradise, but it used to be. .... a hippie dream."

Thanks for the ID on the suited guy. I figured he was a producer or record company guy of some sort. The rest also is excellent background and info. Appreciated. Geez, haven't listened to Mimi Farina in years. I remember those Vanguard releases of Mimi and Richard, which was Joan's label as well if I remember correctly.

6:06 the moment Stills stops smiling and is mersmerized by Neil's guitar playing, him (Stills) and Crosby act as if possesed. Same thing I noticed happened at some point to Crosby during Southern Man on FIlmore East, he was inmersed by Neil's passionate performance. Also check 1998's Country Feedback Michael Stipes in awe while Neil was soloing. I'm sure Neil Young is an alchemist, an outerworldly being disguised as an earthling

@@kevinallison2227 No, but he recommended Reeves to Young. After Reeves was fired from CSNY (he flipped out on acid, thought he was an Apache witch doctor, and also insisted that the band do songs that he wrote - he was pretty young at the time), Young hired him for the After The Gold Rush sessions, and apparently they've kept in touch since then.

CSNY: a very LA / Hollywoodesque supergroup. Hip but showbiz hip. (Rich) rockstars first and foremost, they were way talented but maybe not authentically counter-culture enough for some in the audience who had come down from the Bay Area for this concert. Stills ‘going after’ someone in the audience over a sellout comment says it all. Everyone in that group fairly quickly shed their hippie trappings when they were no longer fashionable- except Crosby. Whether you like Cros or not, he’s been pretty consistent.
